    Description: Archaeological surveys and excavations in the Jebel Oraf palaeolake basin, north-western Saudi Arabia, have identified a well-preserved early- to mid-Holocene landscape. Two types of occupation site can be distinguished: nine small and ephemeral scatters from single occupation phases on the slopes of sand dunes and three hearth sites indicative of repeated occupation on palaeolake shorelines. In addition, 245 rock art panels, 81 cairns, and 15 stone structures were recorded. This diverse dataset provides an opportunity to reconstruct occupation patterns and changes in landscape use. A particularly important site, Jebel Oraf 2, documents two episodes of lake high stands at ca. 6500 BC and 5300 BC, flooding parts of the locality. Neolithic pastoralists likely occupied the site after the end of the wet season, when the terrain was dry. Earlier sites are located in dune embayments some 7–14 m above the shore of the palaeolake. These locations are consistent with hunting strategies identifiable in the rock art that suggest wildlife was ambushed at watering places. Later rock art at Jebel Oraf also documents the hunting of wild camel in the Iron Age. The lithic industries documented in the Jebel Oraf basin support arguments of repeated contact with Levantine populations.

    Description: Hearth sites are characteristic of Holocene occupation in the Arabian sand seas but remain mostly unstudied. Excavations of two multi-period hearth sites in the Jebel Oraf palaeolake basin, in the oasis of Jubbah, now substantially increase our knowledge of these sites. In total, 17 of 170 identified hearths were excavated at Jebel Oraf 2 (ORF2), an open-air site on the edge of a palaeolake. In addition, 11 hearths were excavated at the stratified site of Jebel Oraf 115 (ORF115), a rockshelter formed by two boulders. Radiocarbon dating and lithic assemblages indicate that the majority of these hearths were in use in the second half of the 6th millennium BCE, and that both sites were used sporadically until the recent past. All hearths appear to have been extremely short-lived, and faunal remains suggest they may have been used to cook meat from hunted or trapped wildlife, and occasionally from livestock. The frequent use of grinding stones, often broken into fragments and used to cover hearths is also attested. Evidence for the exceptionally early use of metal from dated occupation deposits as well as from rock art, shows that these short-lived sites were well connected to technological innovations in the wider region.

    Description: Despite many of years of mapping effort, only a small fraction of the world ocean’s seafloor has been sampled for depth, greatly limiting our ability to explore and understand critical ocean and seafloor processes. Recognizing this poor state of our knowledge of ocean depths and the critical role such knowledge plays in understanding and maintaining our planet, GEBCO and the Nippon Foundation have joined forces to establish the Nippon Foundation GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project, an international effort with the objective of facilitating the complete mapping of the world ocean by 2030. The Seabed 2030 Project will establish globally distributed regional data assembly and coordination centers (RDACCs) that will identify existing data from their assigned regions that are not currently in publicly available databases and seek to make these data available. They will develop protocols for data collection (including resolution goals) and common software and other tools to assemble and attribute appropriate metadata as they assimilate regional grids using standardized techniques. A Global Data Assembly and Coordination Center (GDACC) will integrate the regional grids into a global grid and distribute to users world-wide. The GDACC will also act as the central focal point for the coordination of common data standards and processing tools as well as the outreach coordinator for Seabed 2030 efforts. The GDACC and RDACCs will collaborate with existing data centers and bathymetric compilation efforts. Finally, the Nippon Foundation GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project will encourage and help coordinate and track new survey efforts and facilitate the development of new and innovative technologies that can increase the efficiency of seafloor mapping and thus make the ambitious goals of Seabed 2030 more likely to be achieved.

    Description: The observed mean annual permafrost temperature data for the period 2016-2019 at 10-20 m depths show a range from no warming in the Adventdalen, Ny-Ålesund and Barentsburg areas, up to 0.15°C/yr warming in inner Adventdalen at Janssonhaugen. This shows that there is still a response to the general warming that Svalbard has seen over the last decades. During the observation period, the mean annual air temperature declined by 0.6°C, with a particular cooling in the autumns. There was a clear reduction in the amount of precipitation of 100 mm. This caused the top permafrost temperature to decrease at all observation sites ranging from 0.2°C/yr at Kapp Linné to 0.6°C/yr in Barentsburg. The active layer has mostly decreased slightly in thickness over the 2016-2019 period from 1 cm/yr in Ny-Ålesund to 6.5 cm/yr in Adventdalen, while two sites had small increases, 1 cm/yr at Kapp Linne and 3.5 cm/yr at Janssonhaugen. In the blockfield at Breinosa the active layer doubled to 98 cm, while in raised marine sediments in Barentsburg the active layer thinned by 18.5 cm/yr from summer 2017 to summer 2019. The ground ice content in the Svalbard permafrost observation boreholes is largest in the permafrost in valley bottom sediments, up to 160% (relative to dry weight), with much less ice in the bedrock sites, typically below 15%. In Adventdalen the permafrost has a much higher content of ground ice, reaching 150% in the top 1-3 m, where terrestrial sediments such as loess and solifluction sediment dominate, and clearly lower ice content ~25-30% in the fluvial and marine sediments below. The overview of the drilling equipment demonstrates clearly that Svalbard is now well-equipped for drilling boreholes with a range of equipment, allowing creation of both deep and shallow boreholes. The review of the drilling methods used for the existing observation boreholes shows that most of them, even though made for permafrost observation, did not collect cores, and some do not even have any stratigraphical record.

    Notes: Data are presented on modified spontaneous emission rates in quantum dot microcavity arrays. Three-dimensional optical confinement is achieved using apertured microcavities with square aperture sizes varied from 5 to 1 μm on a side. A maximum measured increase in the on-resonance spontaneous emission rate over that off resonance is ∼50%, and we identify this enhancement with apertured modes of the microcavity. Oscillations in the spontaneous emission rate versus wavelength correspond to spectral resonances in the higher order aperture modes. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Data are presented on the electroluminescence from an ensemble of self-organized quantum dots excited at low current densities. The ensemble contains ∼105 dots, which produce a ground state spectral emission with a 14 K linewidth of ∼1 meV at low current density (∼5×10−2 A/cm2). While the spectra show clearly discrete energy levels, we suggest that obtaining a single ground state emission from the ensemble may be due to interdot electronic coupling. Spectral broadening decreases for decreasing current density due to electronic state filling, even for the lowest current densities studied. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Controlled spontaneous lifetimes are demonstrated in InGaAlAs/GaAs quantum dots confined in planar microcavities. Due to their independent and spectrally sharp light emission, the quantum dot emitters provide an excellent means for studying the spontaneous lifetime dependence on microcavity tuning, while maintaining experimental parameters such as temperature and pump intensity constant. The measured lifetime changes are compared with calculated results and show good agreement. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.
