    Notes: A boundary element method is developed and used to compute the volume-average rheological properties of layered suspensions in a mean simple shearing flow up to a volume concentration of 0.5. The suspension is made up of a periodic array of neutrally buoyant, monosized spheroids in the x and y directions suspended in a Newtonian fluid that is subjected to a mean shear flow in the xz plane. The results for a monolayered suspension of spheres agree well with other simulations and some experimental results. Some new results for prolate and oblate spheroids are also given. Both the volume-average first and second normal stress differences are found to be zero in the simulation in all the cases considered.

    Notes: Abstract A new phenomenological constitutive equation for homogeneous suspensions of macrosized fibres is proposed. In the model, the local averaged orientation of the fibres is represented by a director field, which evolves in time in a manner similar to the rotation of a prolate spheroid. The stress is linear in the strain rate, but the viscosity is a fourth-order tensor that is directly related to the director field. In the limit of low-volume fractions of fibres, the model reduces properly to the leading terms of the constitutive equation for dilute suspensions of spheroids. The model has three parameters: the aspect ratio R of the fibres, the volume fraction Φ, and A, which plays the role of the maximum-volume fraction of the fibres. Experimental shear data are used to estimate the parameter A, and the resulting model is used in a boundary-element program to study the flow past a sphere placed at the centre line of a cylinder for the whole range of volume fractions from 0.01 to near maximum volume fraction. The agreement with experimental data from Milliken et al. [1] is good.

    Notes: Abstract A variety of studies reported in the literature have established that initially well mixed suspensions subjected to non-homogeneous shear flows attain an anisotropic particulate structure. It has also been shown that non-homogeneous shearing causes suspensions of unimodal spheres to demix, i.e., gradients in solids concentration are formed. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of non-homogeneous shear flows on suspensions of bimodal particles, and specifically, to determine if the solids concentration gradients which develop are accompanied by size segregation of the coarse with respect to the fine fraction. We used the simplest and most direct methods to determine the relative solids concentrations: visual observation of tracer particles in transparent suspensions and physical separation of the coarse and fine solid fractions. Three different types of non-homogeneous shear flows were examined, and in each case the data support two main conclusions: 1) suspended particles migrate from regions of high shear rate to regions of low shear rate, and 2) the coarse fraction of particles migrates much faster than the fine fraction, leading to size segregation of initially well-mixed suspensions. While the former conclusion is consistent with other studies reported in the literature, to our knowledge this paper provides the first data supporting and, to a limited extent, quantifying the latter conclusion.

    Notes: Abstract The paper is concerned with the squeezing flow of a model suspension fluid. The numerical solution obtained by a time-dependent Boundary Element Method is compared to an asymptotic solution at large radius. It is found that the kinematics are Newtonian in character, and the fibres quickly align themselves radially. Consequently, the squeezing force is only weakly dependent on the initial orientations of the fibres and the device can be used for measuring the effective viscosity of the suspension. The effective viscosity found from the squeezing flow agrees surprisingly well with experimental data and numerical data derived from the falling sphere geometry at low volume fractions (Φ 〈 0.1).

    Notes: Abstract Abundance data for Cs, Rb, Tl, Ba, Pb, Sr, the rare earths, Th, U, Zr, Hf, Sn, Nb, Mo, Mn, Cu, Co, Ni, Sc, V, Cr, Ag, Sb and the major elements are reported for two andesites and a dacite from Saipan, nine andesites and a dacite from Bougainville and two andesites from Fiji. The Saipan rocks are low-K varieties and contain notably low abundances of Rb, Ba, Th and U and have rare earth patterns subparallel to chondritic patterns. The Bougainville andesites include low-Si and high-K varieties which have higher concentrations of the large cations. The Fijian samples are close to the average circum-Pacific andesite and have rareearth patterns sub-parallel to those of sedimentary rocks. All the andesites contain characteristically low (〈 20 ppm) values for Ni and have Ni/Co ratios 〈 1, and V/Ni ratios 〉 10. These data preclude derivation of calc-alkaline rocks by mixing of upper crustal material or by fractional crystallisation from basaltic parents. A two stage model is proposed involving sea-floor spreading and transportation of the oceanic crust down the dipping seismic plane into the mantle where it is remelted to form andesites.

    Notes: Abstract Numerical simulations of a spherical particle sedimenting in circular, triangular and square conduits containing a viscous, inertialess, Newtonian fluid were investigated using the Boundary Element Method (BEM). Settling velocities and pressure drops for spheres falling along the centre-lines of the conduits were computed for a definitive range of sphere sizes. The numerical simulations for the settling velocities showed good agreement with existing experimental data. The most accurate analytic solution for a sphere settling along the axis of a circular conduit produced results which were almost indistinguishable from the present BEM calculations. For a sphere falling along the centre-line of a square conduit, the BEM calculations for small spheres agreed well with analytic results. No analytic results for a sphere falling along the axis of a triangular conduit were available for comparison. Extrapolation of the BEM predictions for the pressure drops, to infinitely small spheres, showed remarkable agreement with analytic results. For the circular conduit, the sphere's settling velocity and angular velocity were computed as a function of drop position for small, medium and large spheres. Excellent agreement with a reflection solution was achieved for the small sphere. In addition, end effects were investigated for centre-line drops and compared where possible with available experimental data and analytic results.
