Notes: We find the analog of the Boillat metric of Born–Infeld theory for the M5-brane. We show that it provides the propagation cone of all 5-brane degrees. In an arbitrary background field, this cone never lies outside the Einstein cone. An energy momentum tensor for the three-form is defined and shown to satisfy the Dominant Energy Condition. The theory is shown to be well defined for all values of the magnetic field but there is a limiting electric field strength. We consider the strong coupling limit of the M5-brane and show that the corresponding theory is conformally invariant and admits infinitely many conservation laws. On reduction to the Born–Infeld case this agrees with the work of Bialynicki-Birula. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: [Auszug] Drs Hawking and Gibbons write: The two main points that Batten and Olowin make about our paper are: 1. The measured eccentricities of short period binaries are unreliable and may not represent real eccentricities. 2. There may be a selection effect which makes the detection of higher ...

Notes: [Auszug] Fig. 1 The eccentricities of forty-six short period double line spectroscopic binary systems. Here we would like to present an additional argument not considered by Trimble and Thorne. This suggests that at least one or two of these binaries may contain black holes. Notes: Abstract It is shown that there are restrictions on the possible changes of topology of space sections of the universe if this topology change takes place in a compact region which has a Lorentzian metric and spinor structure. In particular, it is impossible to create a single wormhole or attach a single handle to a spacetime but it is kinematically possible to create such wormholes in pairs. Another way of saying this is that there is a ℤ2 invariant for a closed oriented 3-manifold Σ which determines whether Σ can be the spacelike boundary of a compact manifoldM which admits a Lorentzian metric and a spinor structure. We evaluate this invariant in terms of the homology groups of Σ and find that it is the mod2 Kervaire semi-characteristic.

Notes: Abstract We discuss the dynamical symmetries of the multi-centre metrics and apply our results to the scattering of B.P.S. monopoles and fluctuations around such monopoles. In particular, we give a detailed account of the hidden symmetries of the Taub-NUT metric.

Notes: Abstract Starting from a 4n-dimensional quaternionic Kähler base space, we construct metrics of cohomogeneity one in (4n+3) dimensions whose level surfaces are theS 2 bundle space of almost complex structures on the base manifold. We derive the conditions on the metric functions that follow from imposing the Einstein equation, and obtain solutions both for compact and non-compact (4n+3)-dimensional spaces. Included in the non-compact solutions are two Ricci-flat 7-dimensional metrics withG 2 holonomy. We also discuss two other Ricci-flat solutions, one on theR 4 bundle overS 3 and the other on anR 4 bundle overS 4. These haveG 2 and Spin(7) holonomy respectively.

Notes: Abstract The time symmetric initial value problem for black holes is discussed. It is shown that if a solution contains marginally trapped surfaces these correspond to minimal surfaces lying inside the black holes. Such minimal surfaces must have spherical topology. These minimal surfaces are used to obtain lower bounds for the areas of event horizons and upper bounds for the efficiency for radiating gravitational radiation. It is shown that moving black holes closer together reduces the energy available and that a single initially distorted black hole (perhaps formed just after a very assymetric collapse) cannot radiate more than 65% of its rest mass away. “Wormholes” are also briefly discussed.

Notes: Abstract The Positive Action conjecture requires that the action of any asymptotically Euclidean 4-dimensional Riemannian metric be positive, vanishing if and only if the space is flat. Because any Ricci flat, asymptotically Euclidean metric has zero action and is local extremum of the action which is a local minimum at flat space, the conjecture requires that there are no Ricci flat asymptotically Euclidean metrics other than flat space, which would establish that flat space is the only local minimum. We prove this for metrics onR 4 and a large class of more complicated topologies and for self-dual metrics. We show that ifR μ μ ≧0 there are no bound states of the Dirac equation and discuss the relevance to possible baryon non-conserving processes mediated by gravitational instantons. We conclude that these are forbidden in the lowest stationary phase approximation. We give a detailed discussion of instantons invariant under anSU(2) orSO(3) isometry group. We find all regular solutions, none of which is asymptotically Euclidean and all of which possess a further Killing vector. In an appendix we construct an approximate self-dual metric onK3 — the only simply connected compact manifold which admits a self-dual metric.

Notes: Abstract We classify the action of one parameter isometry groups of Gravitational Instantons, complete non singular positive definite solutions of the Einstein equations with or without Λ term. The fixed points of the action are of 2-types, isolated points which we call “nuts” and 2-surfaces which we call “bolts”. We describe all known gravitational instantons and relate the numbers and types of the nuts and bolts occurring in them to their topological invariants. We perform a 3+1 decomposition of the field equations with respect to orbits of the isometry group and exhibit a certain duality between “electric” and “magnetic” aspects of gravity. We also obtain a formula for the gravitational action of the instantons in terms of the areas of the bolts and certain nut charges and potentials that we define. This formula can be interpreted thermodynamically in several ways.
