Notes: Castor oil has been used to prepare millable elastomers by using 2,4-toluene diisocyanate, 4,4′-diphenylmethane diisocyanate, and 1,5-naphthalene diisocyanate, respectively. These elastomers are vulcanized with sulfur and 4,4′-diphenylmethane diisocyanate separately by using the standard methods of rubber technology, and the properties of these vulcanizates are reported.

Notes: Hydroxyl-terminated polybutadienes were prepared by using azo initiators such as di(4-hydroxybutyl)-2,2′-azobisisobutyrate and di(3-hydroxybutyl)-2,2′-azobisisobutyrate, one of which contains primary and the other secondary hydroxyl groups. The effects of aliphatic diols and 2,4-toluene diisocyanate (TDI) in the presence of dibutyltindilaurate (DBTDL) as catalyst, on crosslinking of primary and secondary hydroxyl groups, were studied. Polyurethane elastomers from these polymers are prepared by using different ratios of diols, 2,4-toluene diisocyanate and catalyst. Physical properties such as hardness, tensile strength, 100% modulus, and elongation at break of these polymers were studied with a view to compare them with the physical properties of elastomers prepared from ARCO R-45M.

Notes: Telechelic prepolymers of butadiene with aliphatic isocyanate end-groups were prepared by the solution polymerization of butadiene under free radical initiation. 4,4′-Azobis (4-cyanopentanoyl azide) was used as the initiator. Liquid prepolymers were obtained with molecular weights of 1450 to 6000 and functionalities 1.9 to 2.2. The prepolymers were characterized by their number-average molecular weight, isocyanate content, functionality, infrared, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectra and microstructure. The storage stability of the prepolymers was checked and they were found to be quite stable under ambient conditions. Isocyanate-terminated polybutadienes were reacted with N,N-dimethylamino ethanol and t-butyl hydroperoxide to obtain useful dimethylamino-terminated and peroxycarbamate-terminated prepolymers, respectively.

Notes: Novel silicon-containing poly-1,2,4-triazoles have been synthesized by the reaction of polyhydrazide precursors and aniline in polyphosphoric acid (PPA) at 260°C. The polyhydrazide intermediates were prepared from aromatic dihydrazides and silicon-containing acid dichlorides via interfacial polycondensation. These polymers and their intermediates were characterized by infrared spectroscopy (IR), solubility, and by solution viscosity. The thermal behavior of these polytriazoles has been studied by dynamic thermogravimetry.
