    Notes: Abstract Microcellular (MC) soles based on NR/polyethylene blends were developed as possible replacements for the conventional NR/HSR soles. The mechanical properties of the soles suggest that 80/20 NR/LDPE blends can be used for light weight good quality soles. 80/20 blends of NR/HDPE are also found to be promising base materials for good quality soles. A part of HSR in a NR/HSR blend was replaced by LDPE and the effect of replacement on the mechanical properties was evaluated. It is found that 70/15/15 NR/HSR/LDPE and 60/20/20 NR/HSR/LDPE based MC soles show better mechanical properties than NR/LDPE based MC soles.

    Notes: Ethylene-propylene-diene rubber (EPDM) and isobutylene-isoprene rubber (IIR) were compounded, precured to a low degree, and then were blended with natural rubber (NR). The compounding ingredients for NR were then added and the final curing was done. NR/EPDM and NR/IIR blends, prepared using this method, were found to possess much improved mechanical properties as compared to their conventional counterparts. The optimum precuring crosslink density that has to be given to the EPDM and IIR phases has been determined. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Nylon-nitrile rubber blends having different plastic-rubber component ratios (100/0, 80/20, 70/30, 60/40, 50/50, 40/60, 30/70, 20/80, and 0/100) were prepared by melt mixing technique in a Rheocord-90 at a temperature set at 180°C. The mixing characteristics of the blends have been analyzed from the rheographs. The morphology of the blend was studied using optical and electron microscopies, with special reference to the effect of blend ratio. The micrographs indicate a two-phase system where the component having lower proportions was found to disperse in the major continuous phase. A cocontinuous morphology was observed for 50/50 composition. Mechanical properties of the blends have been measured according to standard test methods. The effect of blend ratio on the mechanical properties like tensile strength, tear strength, elongation at break, stress-strain behavior, and hardness has been analyzed. The influence of the strain rate on the mechanical properties has also been analyzed. The mechanical properties were found to have a strong dependence on the amount of nylon in the blend. It is found that the blends with higher proportions of nylon have superior mechanical properties. The observed changes in mechanical properties are explained on the basis of the morphology of the blend. Various theoretical models such as Series, Parallel, Halpin-Tsai, and Coran's equations have been used to fit the experimental mechanical data. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The mechanical properties of the blends confirm this observation. PVC stabilizer based on magnesium oxide, zinc oxide, and stearic acid was found to be very useful in NBR/PVC blends.

    Notes: Studies on melt rheological properties of blends of low density polythylene (LDPE) with selected grades of linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE), which differ widely in their melt flow indices, are reported. The data obtained in a capillary rheometer are presented to describe the effects of blend composition and shear rate on flow behavior index, melt viscosity, and melt elasticity. In general, blending of LLDPE I that has a low melt flow index (2 g/10 min) with LDPE results in a decrease of its melt viscosity, processing temperature, and the tendency of extrudate distortion, depending on blending ratio. A blending ratio around 20-30% LLDPE I seems optimum from the point of view of desirable improvement in processability behavior. On the other hand, blending of LLDPE II that has a high melt flow index (10g/10 min) with LDPE offers a distinct advantage in increasing the pseudoplasticity of LDPE/LLDPE II blends. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
