    Description: Several spacecraft missions have recently targeted asteroids to study their morphologies and physical properties (e.g. Galileo, NEAR Shoemaker), and more are planned. MUSES-C is a Japanese mission designed to rendezvous with a near-Earth asteroid (NEA). The MUSES-C spacecraft, Hayabusa, was launched successfully in May 2003. It will rendezvous with its target asteroid in 2005, and return samples to the Earth in 2007. Its target, 25143 Itokawa (1998 SF36), made a close approach to the Earth in 2001. We collected an extensive ground-based database of broadband photometry obtained during this time, which maximized the phase angle coverage, to characterize this target in preparation for the mission. Our project was designed to capitalize on the broadband UBVRI photometric observations taken with a series of telescopes, instrumentation, and observers. Photometry and spectrophotometry of Itokawa were acquired at Lowell, McDonald, Steward, Palomar, Table Mountain and Kiso Observatories. The photometric data sets were combined to calculate Hapke model parameters of the surface material of Itokawa, and examine the solar-corrected broadband color characteristics of the asteroid. Broadband photometry of an object can be used to: (1) determine its colors and thereby contribute to the understanding of its surface composition and taxonomic class, and (2) infer global physical surface properties of the target body. We present both colors from UBVRI observations of the MUSES-C target Itokawa, and physical properties derived by applying a Hapke model to the broadband BVRI photometry.

    Description: The limb darkening at small phase angles of several materials believed to be analogs of those found on the surfaces of asteroids and other related objects such as Phobos and Deimos is investigated. The materials include three carbonaceous chondrites, one ordinary chondrite, and a steel powder. The wavelength dependence of the limb darkening at visible and near-IR wavelengths is examined. The effects of surface roughness on limb-darkening parameters, and hence on measured geometric albedos, are estimated, and the implications for spherical and ellipsoidal asteroids are discussed.

    Description: Photometric observations of five stars to be occulted by the rings around Uranus are presented. The four stars to be occulted by Saturn or its rings during the period 1985-1991 were also observed. The observations were carried out with a CCD detector attached to the Kitt Peak McGraw-Hill 1.30-m telescope. Landolt standards of widely ranging V-I color indices were used to determine the extinction coefficients, transformation coefficients, and zero points of the stars. Mean extinction coefficients are given for each night of observation. K magnitudes for each star were estimated on the basis of the results of Johnson (1967). The complete photometric data set is given in a series of tables.

    Description: For many years several investigators have suggested that some portion of the near-Earth asteroid population may actually be extinct cometary nuclei. Evidence used to support these hypotheses was based on: observations of asteroid orbits and associated meteor showers (e.g. 3200 Phaethon and the Geminid meteor shower); low activity of short period comet nuclei, which implied nonvolatile surface crusts (e.g. Neujmin 1, Arend-Rigaux); and detections of transient cometary activity in some near-Earth asteroids (e.g. 4015 Wilson-Harrington). Recent investigations have suggested that approximately 5-10% of the near- Earth asteroid population may be extinct comets. However if members of the near-Earth asteroid population are extinct cometary nuclei, then there should be some objects within this population that are near their final stages of evolution and so should demonstrate only low levels of activity. The recent detections of coma from near-Earth object 2001 OG108 have renewed interest in this possible comet-asteroid connection. This paper presents the first high quality ground-based near-infrared reflectance spectrum of a comet nucleus combined with detailed lightcurve and albedo measurements.

    Description: K magnitudes are given for seven Uranus-occulted stars, together with V and I magnitudes for 20 stars that will be occulted by the Uranian rings in 1986-1990 and 15 that will be occulted by the rings of Saturn in the course of 1986-1991. Occultation stars are noted to be up to 1 mag brighter in the K bandpass than could be predicted on the basis of V-I colors alone; this is explainable in terms of typical degrees of interstellar reddening.

    Description: The values obtained for brightness ratios between contiguous bright and dark areas on Deimos from Viking Orbiter images, together with the lack of a significant wavelength dependence of these ratios in the 0.4-0.6-micron range, are presently noted to be consistent with particle size fraction measurements of the Murchison CM meteorite. These data, and a near-coincidence of Deimos absolute reflectances with those of laboratory samples, render the present data consistent with both brighter and darker materials on Deimos being akin to carbonaceous chondrites; the material with smaller average particle size is associated with the brighter patches.

    Description: A report of 20 stars to be occulted by Neptune and 46 stars to be occulted by Uranus during the period 1986-1990 has been provided by Mink and Klemola (1985). This paper has the objective to present J, H, and K magnitudes for most of these stars. It is pointed out that Uranus and Neptune occultation events observed in the K band give optimal signal-to-noise ratios due to the planets' strong methane absorption at 2.2 microns. Program stars and standards were observed over six nights with the aid of the 30- and 74-in telescopes at the South African Astronomical Observatory in Sutherland. The obtained results show that several bright candidates exist for both planets. The brightest are N55 for Neptune and U37, U41, and U65 for Uranus.
