In: Volkov, I.I. (Ed.), Biogeochemistry of Diagenesis of Ocean Sediments; Nauka Publ. (Moscow): in Russian, 136-170
    Publication Date: 2023-05-12
Description: The book is devoted to study of diagenetic changes of organic matter and mineral part of sediments and interstitial waters of the Pacific Ocean due to physical-chemical and microbiological processes. Microbiological studies deal with different groups of bacteria. Regularities of quantitative distribution and the role of microorganisms in geochemical processes are under consideration. Geochemical studies highlight redox processes of the early stages of sediment diagenesis, alterations of interstitial waters, regularities of variations in chemical composition of iron-manganese nodules.

    Publication Date: 2023-05-12
Description: Distributions of rare earth element contents in surface layer bottom sediments, in vertical sediment section, and in Fe-Mn nodules of the Black Sea have been studied. An inverse relationship of rare earth element contents and CaCO3 contents has been found in the studied sediments. Fe-Mn nodules of the Black Sea do not concentrate rare earth elements, and their rare earth element composition differs from one of host sediments. It is concluded that rare earth elements are bound with clay minerals of bottom sediments.

Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow | Supplement to: Volkov, Igor I; Fomina, Lidiya S (1971): Trace elements in sapropel muds of the Black Sea and their relationship with organic matter. Litologiya i Poleznyye Iskopaemyye (Lithology and Mineral Resources), 6(6), 3-15
    Publication Date: 2023-05-12
Description: The study of vertical distribution of Mo, V, Co, Ni, and Cu in mass of Black Sea sediments showed that maximum concentrations occur in sapropelic muds of ancient Black Sea deposits. A special study of sapropels samples showed a sufficiently clear correlation of Cu, Ni, Mo, and V contents with organic carbon contents; Co contents do not show such a correlation, but show one with contents of pyrite sulfur. A study of fractions of bitumen, free humic and fulvic acids showed that some part of metal contents in the sediments is bound with organic matter. It is shown that increased concentrations of trace elements in sapropels result from removing of dissolved metals from seawater by organic detritus during deposition on the bottom, in vivo concentration of metals in plankton organisms is of secondary importance.
