Notes:
Block copolymers containing polyether segments and segments of a vinyl polymer have been synthesized. A low molecular weight polyether terminated with isocyanate groups was condensed with bis-(β-hydroxyethyl disulfide) to give polyurethanes containing reactive disulfide linkages. When this polymer was photolyzed in the presence of a vinyl monomer such as styrene, methyl methacrylate, or acrylonitrile, homolytic cleavage of the disulfide polymerized the monomer, giving block copolymers. The mechanical properties of the products were investigated by means of modulus-temperature measurements.
