Notes: Local density–functional methods are used to examine the behavior of O and O-related defect complexes on the walls of nanopipes in GaN. We find that O has a tendency to segregate to the (101¯0) surface and identify the gallium vacancy surrounded by three oxygen impurities [VGa–(ON)3] to be a particularly stable and electrically inert complex. We suggest that during Stranski–Krastanow growth, when interisland spaces shrink, these defects reach a critical concentration beyond which further growth is prevented and nanopipes are formed. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: [Auszug] According to the theory of dynamical systems6, the evolution of a system can be described by trajectories in the state space. The coordinates of the state space are defined by the variables needed to completely describe the evolution of the system. Each trajectory in the state space represents the ...

Notes: [Auszug] Because of the importance of the problem, considerable efforts have been made to extract information about trends, periodicities, natural variability and noise from the records5"8. Ghil and Vautard (GV hereafter)4 applied singular spectrum analysis (SSA) to one of the available records. This ...

Notes: [Auszug] SIR - The singular spectrum approach (SSA) has recently been used to identify a low-frequency oscillation in the global surface air temperature record1. SSA2'3 considers M lagged copies of a series X(t) sampled at equal intervals r, Xt= X(tQ + ZT), i = 1, TV, and estimates the ...

Notes: [Auszug] In the past, the identification of chaotic dynamics from time series relied heavily on the estimation of the dimension of the underlying attractor3"6, but this approach has certain drawbacks. First, the algorithms involved7'8 require a large number of data points, which are often not ...

Notes: [Auszug] SIR - Ghil and Vautard1 applied singular spectrum analysis to a global temperature data set and claimed the existence of a 20-year oscillation corresponding to a pair of high variance empirical orthogonal functions (EOFs). Notes: Summary Significance limits are proposed as an alternative to the use of standard deviation, standard error, or confidence or tolerance limits when experimental data are presented in a graphical form. This measurement of uncertainty allows graphical t-tests to be used both for the estimation of data variance and for an approximate statistical comparison between two or more data sets.

Notes: Abstract The spatial structure of covariability in the surface air temperature records of the last 109 years is examined using factor analysis. From the results it is indicated that the Northern Hemisphere can be objectively divided into 15 regions with each region having a similar covariance structure of surface air temperatures. From such a division it is noted that warming is evident over 11 out of the 15 regions. The strongest warming is not, however, confined to specific latitudinal belts, for example, the tropics or the arctic, nor is the strongest warming confined to a specific continent. As a consequence of the coarse spatial dsitribution of available data, results should be considered preliminary.

Notes: Abstract  This paper describes an experimental study of the relationship between coherent vortical structures and the intensity of heat transport in the initial region of a round, free jet. Simultaneous measurements of velocity and temperature were taken with a four-wire combined probe in a jet that was acoustically stimulated with a frequency corresponding to the jet-column mode. The obtained results suggest that the mutual phase relations between oscillatory and random components of velocity and temperature lead to substantial intensification of the radial heat transport. Due to the same reason the longitudinal heat flux does not reveal a significant change in the presence of coherent structures and, as a result, a much wider spread of the temperature field in comparison with velocity may be observed as a characteristic feature of this flow. It was also observed that heat transfer processes are realized in substantial part by random turbulence generated due to the action of coherent motion.
