Notes: Collisional–radiative (C–R) calculations based on the generalized multithermal equilibrium (GMTE) model are used to find the effects of radiative transfer and diffusion on excited-state populations in a hydrogen plasma. Radiation absorption factors are introduced to study the nonlocal aspects of radiative transfer. Unlike escape factors, the absorption factor can represent the absorption of more radiation than that emitted, and hence provides C–R analysis in strong gradients such as the outer edge of arcs or plasma jets. The Boltzmann temperatures of excited atoms are found not necessarily equal to the electron kinetic temperature, contrary to the usual assumption.

Notes: A facility is described for the spectroscopic diagnostics of an electric arc in a rotating magnetic field. The magnetic field is used to convert the arc into a "surface of revolution'' which internally provides a more uniform and controllable plasma for particle treatment or plasma chemistry applications. The magnetic field also enhances the spectral lines indicating a non-LTE condition. A high-frequency, two phase amplifier and phase shifter are used to generate the rotating mag- netic field in the coil. Present operating conditions are 0–300 G at 500–2000 Hz and 100–1000 A.

Notes: A high-pressure arc facility has been modified for computerized control and data acquisition to simplify measurements of non-local thermal equilibrium (non-LTE) plasmas. The instrumentation uses a 1-m monochrometer with programmable wavelength scanning system. Plasma self-absorption is determined via a concave back mirror and shutter. The raw data are corrected for absorption, zeroed, centered, and smoothed. The net line intensity is then determined and converted into the radial emission coefficient prior to feeding into LTE or non-LTE analysis programs. Sample graphs demonstrating the self-absorption correction technique and data reduction procedure are presented.

Notes: Four approaches (relational, network, hierarchical, entity-relationship) to integrated-circuit chip database design are presented with illustrative examples. Integrated-circuit chip databases appear to be a fertile field for further study. In addition, the study of integrated-circuit chip databases may contribute to finding more effective and more efficient ways to design large-scale digital systems, computers, and intelligent robots.

Notes: Boolean algebra, Karnaugh map method and Quine-McClusky algorithm are usually the tools used for minimizing logic functions using gates. However, with the advent of IC chips, the criteria for implementing a low-cost circuit have been changed from logic gate reduction to IC chip reduction. In this paper, the IC chip reduction problem is systematically analyzed and illustrated by examples. More specifically, the direct mapping method, the IC chip diagram, the IC chip usage table, the reduced IC chip usage table and the reduced IC chip diagram are created and used for IC chip reduction. The reduction process is illustrated step by step with examples. In addition, six substitution rules for reducing the IC chip usage table are also presented. The IC chip reduction problem is both theoretically challenging and practically useful. The results may have useful applications in picture description reduction, picture semantic network reduction as well as in other related areas. It illustrates the effectiveness of a cybernetic approach.

Notes: [Auszug] A striking feature of mortality from falls of the elderly in Britain has been the recession in mortality over the period of wartime and post-war austerity from 1940 to 1950, subsequently rising to be followed later by a steady fall since 195859. This pattern, which appears in the mortalities of ...

Notes: Abstract The nonequilibrium process of argon plasma torches is analyzed theoretically. Thermodynamic diagrams of different degrees of ionization are developed to aid in understanding and analyzing the transition from chemical equilibrium to frozen flow in dc plasma torch operations. A thermodynamic model is developed to describe the nonequilibrium processes in a dc argon plasma torch. In the model the ionization process is approximated as a constant-pressure heating process, with little deviation from the equilibrium state upon completion of heating. If the plasma flow is frozen shortly after heating, the entropy increase is small during the transition from equilibrium to frozen flow. In this case the frozen flow will have nearly the same composition and entropy as the flow at the heating section exit. For singly ionized argon plasmas in the entropy range relevant to dc torch operation, the frozen flow solutions on the affinity–pressure diagram are found to be insensitive to entropy change. Therefore the present model predicts that argon plasmas generated at different power levels will have almost identical affinity at the torch exit for the same operating pressure. This prediction agrees with experimental observations except for very low torch power levels.

Description: It is widely accepted that the essential role of TRAF6 in vivo is to generate the Lys63-linked ubiquitin (K63-Ub) chains needed to activate the “master” protein kinase TAK1. Here, we report that TRAF6 E3 ligase activity contributes to but is not essential for the IL-1–dependent formation of K63-Ub chains, TAK1 activation, or IL-8 production in human cells, because Pellino1 and Pellino2 generate the K63-Ub chains required for signaling in cells expressing E3 ligase-inactive TRAF6 mutants. The IL-1–induced formation of K63-Ub chains and ubiquitylation of IRAK1, IRAK4, and MyD88 was abolished in TRAF6/Pellino1/Pellino2 triple-knockout (KO) cells, but not in TRAF6 KO or Pellino1/2 double-KO cells. The reexpression of E3 ligase-inactive TRAF6 mutants partially restored IL-1 signaling in TRAF6 KO cells, but not in TRAF6/Pellino1/Pellino2 triple-KO cells. Pellino1-generated K63-Ub chains activated the TAK1 complex in vitro with similar efficiently to TRAF6-generated K63-Ub chains. The early phase of TLR signaling and the TLR-dependent secretion of IL-10 (controlled by IRAKs 1 and 2) was only reduced modestly in primary macrophages from knockin mice expressing the E3 ligase-inactive TRAF6[L74H] mutant, but the late-phase production of IL-6, IL-12, and TNFα (controlled only by the pseudokinase IRAK2) was abolished. RANKL-induced signaling in macrophages and the differentiation of bone marrow to osteoclasts was similar in TRAF6[L74H] and wild-type cells, explaining why the bone structure and teeth of the TRAF6[L74H] mice was normal, unlike TRAF6 KO mice. We identify two essential roles of TRAF6 that are independent of its E3 ligase activity.
