Description: The dolomite-ferroan-dolomite-ankerite series of carbonate minerals has been investigated in flowing carbon dioxide using high-temperature DSC. Decomposition products were analysed by X-ray diffraction. The minerals studied included dolomite containing no iron, and members substituted by iron in the molar ratio range of 0.082 to 0.49. Complete resolution of the three main endothermic features was observed and enthalpy values ΔH, determined from each. The individual and total enthalpy values showed a linear dependence upon the Fe and Mg content of the members across the series. A decrease in the enthalpy of decomposition occurs with increasing Fe content. The effect of Fe substitution was readily observed and the estimated limit of detection is less than 1% FeO. Accuracy of the measurements was limited by the purity of the minerals themselves.

Notes: Abstract In addition to calcite, other carbonate minerals in coal all undergo endothermic reactions on heating, i.e. dolomite, ankerite, siderite, aragonite, magnesite, rhodochrosite, witherite and strontianite. Of these, when determined in air, siderite and rhodochrosite give small exothermic resultants, while the amount of Fe in ankerites affects the actual endothermic values obtained. The magnitude of these carbonate decomposition reactions can be shown by DTA to be different and will need to be allowed for individually in calorific value corrections of coals containing them.

Notes: Abstract A series of aged granulated blast furnace slags were investigated by DTA. Devitrification characteristics were found to change as a function of age, and regular trends could be established. XRD showed the devitrification process to result predominantly in melilite formation and minor amounts of merwinite, depending on slag age. Hydration of fresh slags resulted in the gradual formation of hydrated species and calcite. DTA indicated that the devitrification profile also changed with the extent of hydration.

Notes: Abstract With petroleum reserves limited, and nuclear sources increasingly unacceptable, the use of coal (and potentially oil shale) is rapidly increasing as is its content of inorganics (minerals). Thermal analysis techniques are particularly suited for the evaluation, characterisation, analysis, basic, applied and pollution research of such organic and inorganic fossil fuel materials. The type, composition, quality and thermal decomposition characteristics of which control the calorific value, volatile yield, petrochemical potential, coke and fly ash derivatives together with end product ash. slag and gases such as hydrocarbons, SOx, NOx and CO2. Within this context the specific contributions made by DTA and DSC are reviewed and the value/applications of this approach established.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Mittels DSC wurden in Stickstoff einige Vertreter der Siderit-Magnesit-Reihen von Carbonaten untersucht.
Notes: Abstract Members of the siderite-magnesite series of carbonates have been investigated in nitrogen using differential scanning calorimetry. The mineral specimens contained between 0.3–0.95 mole fraction iron. Decomposition temperatures decreased markedly with increasing Fe substitution. Enthalpies of decomposition showed a linear dependence upon the degree of Fe and Fe + Mn substitution. The fit (R 2=0.995) in the case of Fe + Mn suggested that DSC can be used to distinguish members of the series. Decomposition products consisted of substituted iron oxides in most cases.
