Notes: Measurements are reported of the critical supersaturation necessary to initiate the vapor phase nucleation of silver over the ambient temperature range 500 K≤T≤950 K at total pressures of 250 and 500 Torr of hydrogen. The results are compared with the predictions of both classical nucleation theory and the theory of a physical spinodal developed by Rasmussen, neither of which adequately describe our observations. The nucleation of silver appears to be dependent on the total pressure of the system in a manner which suggests that three-body reactions are necessary in order to form the initial silver clusters (e.g., dimers) from the monoatomic vapor.

Notes: [Auszug] SIR-Alvin Weinberg's letter (Nature 324, 610; 1986), criticizing the Cornell Survey of the opinions of National Academy members of the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI), has a basic flaw that invalidates his argument. His criticism is based on the expectation that SDI may be effective against an ...

Notes: [Auszug] More serious objections exist regarding the suggestion by Saslaw and Gaustad that diamonds may form and slow rapidly in conditions appropriate to cool stellar atmospheres. It is well known that graphite is the stable carbon phase below about 104 kbar. This occurs because of the lower free energy of ...

Notes: Abstract Gürtleret al. (1981) argue that SiO could not be the material responsible for the interstellar 10 micron feature as had been proposed by Duleyet al. (1979). While Millar (1982) has quite successfully refuted the arguments of Gürtleret al. (1981), we present here some additional considerations which indicate that the model of Duleyet al. (1979) requires appreciable modification to be consistent with recent experimental results.

Notes: Abstract Several general features of nucleation characteristics of low density cosmic clouds are discussed. These are: (1) tendency for metastable condensates to form, (2) non-occurrence of nominal refractory molecule in the gas, (3) a strong temperature dependence of condensation at relatively low temperatures, and (4) significant vibrational disequilibrium in cosmic clouds. These support previous analyses by the author which indicate that equilibrium calculations have restricted applicability. A kinetic treatment of condensation is required for cosmic grains and the possibility of formulating such an analysis is pointed out.

Notes: Summary Lasting commitment to cosmic chemistry and an awareness of the fascinating role of comets in that study was a consequence of an association with Harold Urey early in my astronomical career. Urey's influence on cometary research spread as colleagues with whom I was associated, in turn, developed their own programs in cometary chemistry. One phase of the Chicago research shows that Whipple's icy nucleus would be below about 250 K. This property, combined with their small internal pressure, means cometary interiors remain essentially unchanged during their lifetime. Observations of cometary spectra indicate that they are rich in simple organic species. Experiments on comet-like ice mixture suggests that the extensive array of interstellar molecules also may be found in comets. The capture of cometary debris by the earth or the impact of comets would have been an early source of biochemically significant molecules. Recent hypotheses on radiogenic heating and melting of water ice in the central zone of nuclei do not seem consistent with recent observations or ideas of structure. Thus comets are not a likely place for life to develop.

Notes: Abstract A mechanism of accumulation of grains in the primordial solar nebula is described. This process produces porous, low density compressible aggregates. Compaction of the aggregates in a collision between them dissipates the kinetic energy of the collision and can result in efficient growth. A simple analysis of such collisions is developed and applied over a range of aggregate sizes and relative velocities. The results indicate that large planetesimals could grow through collisions rather than fragment if the conditions are favorable. Our modelling suggests that primordial asteroids and comets on the order of a kilometer in size will have low densities and irregular shapes.
