    Description: Continuous coring in Saanich Inlet (Ocean Drilling Program, ODP Leg 169S), British Columbia, Canada, yielded a detailed record of Late Quaternary climate, oceanography, marine productivity, and terrestrial vegetation. Two sites (1033 and 1034) were drilled to maximum depths of 105 and 118 m, recovering sediments ranging in age from 13,300 to less than 300 14C yr. Earliest sediments consist of dense, largely massive, gray glaciomarine muds with dropstones and sand and silt laminae deposited during the waning stages of glaciation. Deposition of organic-rich olive gray sediments began in the fjord about 12,000 14C yr ago, under well-oxygenated conditions as reflected by the presence of bioturbation and a diverse infaunal bivalve community. At about 10,500 14C yr, a massive, gray unit, 40-50 cm thick, was emplaced in a very short span of time. The unit is marked by a sharp lower contact, a gradational upper contact and an abundance of reworked Tertiary microfossils. It has been interpreted as resulting from massive flood events caused by the collapse of glacial dams in the Fraser Valley of mainland British Columbia. Progressively greater anoxia in bottom waters of Saanich Inlet began about 7000 14C yr ago. This is reflected in the preservation of varved sediments consisting of diatomaceous spring-summer laminae and terrigenous winter laminae. Correlation of the sediments was based on: marked lithologic changes, the presence of massive intervals (reflecting localized sediment gravity flow events), the Mazama Ash, occasional thin gray laminae (indicative of abnormal flood events in nearby watersheds), varve counts between marker horizons, and 71 accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) radiocarbon dates.

    Notes: The quantitative relationships between stratigraphical variables from a succession of coal-bearing cycles deposited in a subsiding basin have been investigated using principal component- and factor analysis, in an attempt to reveal simple relationships undetected by conventional qualitative methods. Knowledge of such relationships will undoubtedly be useful in future computer simulation studies of cyclical sedimentation. Principal component analysis and factor analysis yield similar results, which confirm and amplify those of the trend surface analysis described in Read and Dean (1967).

    Notes: Electronic computers have enabled the quantitative relationships between stratigraphic variables to be calculated for a sequence of Namurian (E1 zone) cycles deposited in a differentially subsiding basin east of Stirling. Despite their limitations, coefficients of correlation and linear regression equations provide a relatively simple means of expressing the relationships between critical variables and so provide a useful way in which various cyclically deposited sequences can be compared. All possible pairs chosen from eleven variables are investigated, including the total number and average thickness of cycles, total number of coals and total thicknesses of coal, sandstone and shale. These six variables all tend to show a linear relationship with total thickness of strata and hence net subsidence. A second part of this paper, to be published later, will examine the relationships between variables in more detail, using the technique of factor analysis.

    Notes: Ten data sets have been collected from stratigraphical intervals in the Upper Carboniferous of Central Scotland. They represent six structural units and both distal and proximal deltaic environments, plus a meandering river environment. All show a definite tendency towards a linear relationship between the number of deltaic or fluvial cycles and the total thickness of strata in the interval. This relationship is, however, much stronger in sequences laid down in actively subsiding depositional basins than in areas where subsidence is thought to have been controlled by block faulting in the basement or in areas where there is no clearly defined pattern or subsidence. With respect to facies, the relationship is less close in successions that were frequently affected by widespread marine transgressions.The slopes of linear regression lines fitted to the data sets vary much more than had hitherto been supposed. Thus they are no longer thought to provide possible evidence of some ubiquitous underlying process, such as ductile flow in the upper mantle, which affected all the structural units equally. The line which represents proximal deltaic deposits of Westphalian A age in the Kincardine Basin slopes twice as steeply as any of the eight lines representing other dominantly deltaic successions and considerably more steeply than the line representing a succession of Namurian fluvial cycles.Second- and third-degree polynomial regression lines were also fitted to each data set but these generally satisfy little more of the total variation than do the corresponding linear regression lines, and F-test results indicate that the gains are not statistically significant. Eight of the second-degree lines however share a common shape that suggests a general tendency for both deltaic and fluvial cycles to be somewhat thicker in the areas of greatest net subsidence.

    Notes: An experiment using differently marked larval striped bass, Morone saxatilis (Walbaum). and its hybrid (M. saxatilis x M. chrysops (Rafinesque)) was performed in two grow-out ponds. Larval striped bass were immersed in oxytetracycline solution to mark their otoliths; hybrids received no treatment. Larvae from both groups were mixed and stocked at 8 days post hatch into the ponds. Striped bass and hybrid larvae grew to a significantly larger size at 35 days in one pond. In both ponds, hybrid lengths at 35 days after hatch were significantly greater than striped bass lengths. However, the magnitude of the size difference between hybrids and striped bass was twofold greater (10%) in one pond than in the other (5%). The proportion of striped bass juveniles at 35 days differed from the initial stocking proportion (0.53) only in one pond, where hybrids showed 12% greater survival than striped bass. Results suggested that the relative survival of hybrids was influenced by growth conditions in the ponds. Based on the ease of protocol and analysis of the marking experiment, we recommend its use to (1) investigate relative performance between genetic groups of young fish in common environments; and (2) predict the effects of introductions of genetically altered fishes.

    Notes: The reproductive biology of blacknose sharks Carcharhinus acronotus in the western North Atlantic Ocean was studied by examining specimens collected in the coastal waters of South Carolina. Males begin the maturation process between 875 and 910 mm fork length (LF), as indicated by the presence of functional claspers and siphon sacs. The presence of vitellogenic oocytes and developing oviducal glands and uteri indicated that females begin to mature at c. 870 mm LF. Length at which 50% of the population reached maturity was 896 and 964 mm LF, equivalent to 4·3 and 4·5 years, for males and females, respectively. Gonado-somatic indices suggested that spermatogenesis and vitellogenesis began after December. Mating took place during the end of May and the beginning of June. Fertilization occurred during late June and early July, suggesting that female blacknose sharks were capable of sperm storage. Based on the timing of fertilization and occurrence of females carrying near-term pups in late May and early June, the gestation period for blacknose sharks was c. 11 months. Female blacknose sharks reproduced biennially based on the absence of vitellogenic oocytes in near-term females and there being no indication of vitellogenesis in postpartum females. Male blacknose sharks were capable of reproducing annually as indicated by turgid genital ducts, which were observed in all mature males collected during late May and early June.

    Notes: The ability to accurately estimate the age of fishes is critical for conducting stock assessments and developing fishery management policies. Scales were collected from albacore, Thunnus alalunga, caught in the Mediterranean Sea during the years 1989–1995 to estimate their age and growth. Ages, which ranged from 1+ to 6+ years, were estimated from the interpretation of the concentric rings on the scales of 473 individuals that ranged in fork length from 55.5 to 89 cm. Males reached a greater size and age than females. The relatively close agreement in the mean lengths at ages estimated by scales and other techniques constituted a preliminary verification of the method. The von Bertalanffy growth model was fitted to mean lengths at estimated ages, resulting in the following growth parameters for the combined sexes: L∞ = 86 cm, K = 0.4, to = −0.8 years. Parameter estimates were in agreement with what is known about life history of the species in the Mediterranean. Moreover, the growth rates were consistent with length increment observations from five tag returns, which lend support to our working hypothesis that the scale-rings are annual structures. When the Mediterranean albacore growth parameters were compared with those of Atlantic Ocean albacore using scale age estimates, there were significant differences between the two populations, and Mediterranean albacore remain significantly smaller than Atlantic Ocean albacore.

    Notes: Abstract Six species of benthic diatoms and a natural benthic diatom community were cultured in flasks on a variety of sediments. Diatom species which secreted large quantities of mucilage were effective sediment stabilizers. These mucilage-secreting species significantly reduced resuspension and retarded laminar flow of the sediments when the culture flasks were agitated. Diatom species which secreted little or no mucilage were not effective sediment stabilizers. These non-mucilage-secreting species did not significantly effect resuspension or laminar flow of the sediments when the culture flasks were agitated. A sediment stabilizing mechanism based on the secretion of mucilage by pennate benthic diatoms is proposed. The effect such a process may have on distributional patterns of benthic invertebrates in areas where extensive diatom or other microalgal films occur is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Effects of simultaneous short-term (7.5 to 60 min) thermal stress (24° to 34°C) and total residual chlorination (0.05 to 1.0 mg l-1) on specific development stages of the mummichog Fundulus heteroclitus (Pisces: Cyprinodontidae), were investigated. For the embryonic stages, the total number of successfully hatched larvae was used as the criterion to measure effect. For the larval stages, survival 24 h after exposure was used. In the embryonic stages, temperature was the most important main variable. Only one embryonic stage (gastrula) was confounded by second-order interactions (temperature x duration of exposure x total residual chlorination). Both 0-day and 7-day-old larval stages showed significant higher-order interactions for all combinations of test parameters, suggesting the presence of synergistic effects of the three main experimental variables.

    Notes: Abstract An intertidal creek in North Inlet Estuary, South Carolina, USA, was sampled monthly for 1 year to determine the occurrence, abundance and diversity of fish species. Sampling was so conducted as to reduce sampling bias to a minimum and all individuals caught were weighed and measured. A total of 16,611 individuals weighing 202.45 kg and comprising 51 species and 25 families of fish was collected. Three diversity indices were calculated for species number. Analysis of variance revealed that season had a highly significant effect on all indices and the number of species, but had no effect on the number of individuals caught.
