Notes: The electron affinity of platinum has been measured to be 17 125(9) cm−1. A pulsed dye laser beam perpendicular to an ion beam photodetached the Pt−. The relative cross section near threshold was measured by detecting the fast neutrals. The threshold was determined by fitting the cross section to the Wigner law.

Notes: The electron affinity of iridium has been measured to be 12 613(4) cm−1. A pulsed dye laser beam perpendicular to an ion beam photodetached the negative iridium ions, and the relative cross section near threshold was measured by detecting the fast neutrals. The threshold was determined by fitting the cross section to the Wigner law. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract A software system is presented for simulating the behaviour of an automated material handling and transportation system typically used in flexible manufacturing. The program is written in the UPL language on top of a commercially available CAD system. It makes use of a discrete event simulation model written in ECSL to generate a schedule of events defining an animation scenario. The program relies on a graphical library of modular component elements that enable structured automated material handling and transportation system elements to be created. The motion patterns are generic and are implemented as procedures that can be associated with any entity as required. Motion employs the concept of entity associativity within the CAD environment in order to apply the same motion patterns to groups of entities. The latter retain, however, their individual motion specification. Advantages of the program include inherent integration with CAM, availability of a host of parent CAD facilities and thus ability to visualise facility performance and to appraise design in detail.

Notes: Abstract This paper describes the rule structure used to select the appropriate sequence of operations to produce various types of holes in 2 1/2D prismatic components manufactured on machining centres. Operation selection is based on forward chained rules coded in Prolog. A different rule priority sequence is applicable depending on the rule fired last. This solves the conflict resolution problem and ensures reasonably fast execution. Rule conditions perform feature extraction, feature size checks, operation suitability checks, tool suitability checks and processing status checks. Actions perform the processing operations and update the model through feature processing tags. The knowledge base implemented for hole-making was not obtained from a practical industrial environment. Nevertheless it does produce sensible plans and it is relatively easy to modify.

Notes: Abstract Karyotype studies on 20 taxa of gymnosperms endemic to New Zealand show a wide diversity of chromosome number and form. Fluorochrome banding with DAPI and CMA reveals a depauperate pattern of bands with CMA and no reliable banding with DAPI. Characteristically one pair of chromosomes shows a prominent CMA band, which may or may not be associated with a secondary constriction. A band size polymorphism was observed in all plants ofDacrycarpus dacrydioides, irrespective of the sex of the plant. Measurements of genome size by flow cytometry show a range of values from 12.3 pg to 40.0 pg DNA per 2C nucleus. Intraspecific variation in genome size was observed inManoao colensoi.

Notes: Abstract INSPEX is a computer-aided knowledge based inspection planning system for preparing inspection plans from CAD toleranced component models of rotational components. To achieve the complete automation of the inspection process, INSPEX has been integrated with CMMs (computer controlled coordinate measuring machines) via DMIS (Dimensional Measuring Interface Specification), where DMIS has been as a data exchange standard. The inspection procedures produced by INSPEX can be automatically converted into DMIS data format file by the DMIS pre-processor described in this paper, which can be fed into any CMMs with a DMIS interface for executing the inspection procedures.

Notes: Abstract EXCAP, is a knowledge-based process planning system for rotational components. EXCAP uses its own internal product model coded in Prolog to ensure that all the required information can be represented accurately. This internal product model is called the EXCAP model and is described in detail in this paper.

Notes: Abstract The development is described of a flexible manufacturing cell (FMC) programming and simulation system called FMCPS, which generates robot programs for a 6-DOF industrial robot. The development of FMCPS is based on an FMC that is being developed at UMIST. The cell consists of a Fanuc 600 ARCmate industrial robot, a Takisawa MAC V3 CNC machining centre and an MHP MT-50 CNC turning centre. The software has been developed on a SUN 4/110 workstation running under the UNIX operating system, using three-dimensional SUNCORE interactive graphics and SUNVIEW window systems. An event-oriented robot-programming method is used in the FMCPS. This method divides the robot tasks into different events. The user needs to define the points of the robot gripper route and the corresponding data for each event. The Cartesian coordinates of the points in the robot gripper paths are then transformed to the six robot joint angles by a variant inverse kinematics iteration method. These robot joint angles are used in the simulation model which generates robot programs suitable for the Fanuc robot. A three-dimensional, wire-frame-based graphical model is used for simulation. The user can observe the simultaneous animation of the robot movement, and display machine tool paths in separate graphics windows on the screen simultaneously. The various activities in the cell are simulated in pseudo-parallel mode by taking advantage of the multi-tasking and piping features of UNIX. At the end of a simulation exercise, the user is provided with the facility to obtain a performance report for the FMC which gives information on total operation time and on robot and machine utilisation, in addition to the robot program.

Notes: Abstract One of the main drawbacks of the Initial Graphics Exchange Specification (IGES) is the difficulty of accessing and retrieving the required information stored in the IGES files. This is because IGES files created by CAD systems are sequential. This paper describes a module, called “readiges”, which is a general-purpose software package for re-storing IGES files in more conveniently accessible direct-access files. Hence, “readiges” can be used in any research projects that use IGES to integrate CAD systems with other software packages, for example with finite-element packages for mesh-generation purposes or computer-aided process-planning systems.

Notes: Abstract EXCAP is a knowledge-based process-planning system for turned components. This paper describes a software package called CADEXCAP, which has been developed to integrate EXCAP and CAD systems via IGES. CADEXCAP deciphers a full 2 D model of a turned component developed on a CAD system and then, via IGES, fully automatically generates a product model in the EXCAP model format. It is clever enough to extract not only the geometrical information but also the other required information, such as geometrical and dimensional tolerances, surface finish and manufacturing instructions.
