Notes: Four novel symmetric tri-n-alkyltin fluorides were prepared. In this homologous series, melting point decreases with increase in the carbon chain length while an x-ray diffraction study shows an increase in amorphousness. 1H-NMR spectra in cyclohexane, a nonpolar solvent in which these compounds form long polymeric chain, show a peak broadening effect due to high solution viscosity at very low solute concentration. Contrary to this, the spectra in CDCl3, a polar solvent in which these compounds are monomeric, show well resolved and narrow peaks. IR frequencies for Sn—C vibrations have been assigned.

Notes: Several poly-1-hexene samples were prepared using different Ziegler-Natta catalysts, and their solubilities in dense carbon dioxide (CO2) were studied. Despite the varied molecular weight distributions (MWD) in the polymers, a surprising correlation was found between intrinsic viscosity and dense CO2 solubility. Due to the ability of dense CO2 to extract low-molecular weight fractions preferentially, it is recommended that narrow MWD polymers be used, as far as possible, for dense CO2 solubility determinations.

Notes: Kinetics of 1-hexene polymerization was studied by following the amount of unreacted monomer using gas chromatography. The Ziegler-Natta catalyst system used was comprised of TiCl4-AlEt3 with Al: Ti ratio of 0.85. The sampling and monomer analysis techniques developed can be applied to study the kinetics of higher α-olefins polymerizations, in general. Also, with minor modifications in this technique, a precise profile of molecular weight can be obtained during polymerization.

Notes: Polyimides were prepared by reacting 3,3′-sulfonyl-bis(phenyl isocyanate) [SDI] with pyromellitic dianhydride [PMDA] and also with 3,3′,4,4′-benzophenone tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride [BPTD]. Their properties were compared with those obtained by reacting 4,4′-methylene-bis(phenyl isocyanate) [MDI] with respective dianhydrides.

Notes: Copolyimides were prepared by reacting 3,3′,4,4′-benzophenone tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride (BPTD) with mixtures of various proportions of 3,3′-sulfonylbis (phenyl isocyanate) (SDI) and 4,4′-methylenebis (phenyl isocyanate) (MDI) in an aprotic polar solvent. The nature and properties of these copolyimides were studied.
