    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Metabasite aus den Emo-Metamorphiten, die als Crustsheets unter dem Papua-Ophiolit von Papua-Neuguinea vorkommen, lassen sich auf petrographischer Basis in vier Gruppen unterteilen: Gruppe 1 (granatführende Blauschiefer) Gruppe 2 (Amphibolite), Gruppe 3 (Lawsonite-führende Blauschiefer) und Gruppe 4 (Grünschiefer). Die meisten Proben lassen eine polymetamorphe Entwicklung erkennen, mit Texturen, die vom grob gefältelten zum mylonitischen reichen. Viele enthalten primären magmatischen Klinopyroxen, was darauf hinweist, daß die Metamorphose bei relativniedrigen $$P_{H_2 O} $$ stattgefunden hat. Das dürfte auch die eindeutig magmatischen geochemischen Signaturen erklären, die viele Hauptelemente, die sonst während der Metamorphose mobilisiert werden erkennen lassen. Geochemisch sind alle Gesteine als tholeütisch zu bezeichnen und lassen sich in drei Suiten unterteilen: Suite I sind LREE verarmt, und ähneln E-MORB mit signifikant niedrigen Zr-Nb Werten von 8-16. Suite 111 umfaßt Ferrobasalte, die möglicherweise mit Suite 11 komagmatisch sind aber durch P2O5 Gehalte von 〉 0.5 und Zr-Gehalte von 〉 250 ppm sich von den ersteren unterscheidet. Die drei Suiten zeigen signifikant niedrigere FeO und höhere Al2O3 als eine MORB vergleichbare Suite von Galapagos. Diese und andere Spurenelement-Verteilungsmuster sind üblicherweise mit Backarc-Becken Basalten assoziiert. Zwei neue39Ar/40Ar Altersbestimmungen werden vorgelegt und ein tektonisches Modell wird entwickelt, das die geochemischen und die geochronologischen Daten mit gängigen Modellen zur Entwicklung des Orogens von Neuguinea integriert.
    Notes: Summary Metabasites from the Emo Metamorphics, occurring as thrust sheets beneath the Papuan ophiolite of Papua New Guinea, fall into four petrographic groups; Group 1 (garnetiferous blueschists), Group 2 (amphibolites), Group 3 (lawsonite blueschists) and Group 4 (greenschists). Most specimens shows a polymetamorphic history with textures grading from crudely foliated to mylonitic. Many contain primary igneous clinopyroxene, suggesting that metamorphism occurred under relatively low $$P_{H_2 O} $$ . This may explain the coherent magmatic geochemical signatures shown by many major elements normally mobilised during metamorphism. Geochemically the rocks are all tholeiitic in character and fall into three suites; Suite 1 are LREE depleted, resembling N-MORB with Zr/Nb values of 〉 40, Suite 2 are LREE enriched resembling E-MORB and having significantly lower Zr/Nb values of 8-16. Suite 3 includes ferrobasalts possibly comagmatic with Suite 2 but arbitrarily separated byP2O5 contents of 〉 0.5 and Zr contents of 〉 250 ppm. The three suites show significantly lower FeO* and higher AI2O3 than a Galapagos MORB comparative suite; these, and other trace element characteristics are normally associated with back-arc basin basalts. Two new39Ar-40Ar dates are presented, and a tectonic model developed integrating the geochemical and geochronological data with current models of the evolution of the New Guinea Orogen.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung In dieser Arbeit werden Sr, Nd und Pb Isotopendaten transitionaler Basalt-peralkalischer Rhyolithabfolgen und räumlich mit diesen assoziierter kalkalkalischer Rhyolithe der D' Entrecasteaux Inseln im östlichen Papua Neuguinea vorgestellt. Beide Abfolgen zeigen für konvergiernde Plattenränder typische geochemische Signaturen (z.B. hohe Zr/Nb, La/Nb und niedrige Ta/Yb Verhältnisse im Vergleich mit OIB). Die transitionale Basalt-peralkalische Rhyolithabfolge und die kalkalkalischen Rhyolithe zeigen eine geringe Variation in ihren206Pb/204Pb (18.522–18.661),207/204Pb (15.543–15.631) und208Pb/204Pb (38.31–38.63) Verhältnissen, die mit denen von Vulkaniten aus Tonga, Fiji und den pazifischen MOR-Basalten und Sedimenten übereinstimmen. Die transitionale Basalt-peralkalische Rhyolithabfolge zeigt weiters eine geringe Variationsbreite der143Nd/144Nd Verhältnisse (0.513053–0.512984), aber eine größere Streuung der87Sr/86Sr Verhältnisse (0.703989–0.70585). Letztere reflektiern die Unsicherheiten der Alterseinstufung der Proben mit sehr hohen87Rb/86Sr Verhältnissen und die Effekte des Sr-Austausches mit Meerwasser. Die87Sr/86Sr Verhältnisse kalkalkalischer Rhyolithe variieren im Vergleich dazu gerigfügiger (0.703864–0.704028). Isotopen und Spurenelementdaten sind mit der Interpretation, daß die kalkalkalischen Rhyolithe durch partielle Anatexis junger Inselbogen-Protkruste entstanden sind, kompatibel. Die mit ihnen vergesellschafteten basischen bis intermediären klakalkalischen Magmen entstammen einer abgereicherten Mantelquelle, die zuvor durch Subduktionsprozesse entlang des Trobriandgrabens modifiziert wurde. Die transitionale Basalt-peralkalische Rhyolithabfolge entstand durch extensive magmatische Differentiation eines transitionalen basaltischen Stammagmas in einer relativ seicht liegenden Magmenkammer. Das Stammagma wurde durch partielle Aufschmelzung entweder eines abgereicherten MORB-Mantels oder einer weniger stark abgereicherten OIBQuelle, die zuvor durch Subduktionsprozesse modifiziert wurde, gebildet. Die Hyund O1-normativen transitionalen Basaltmagmen wurden wahrscheinlich im Zuge der Ausdünnung von Lithosphäre unter etwas höheren Drucken gebildet als die Quarznormativen kalkalkaischen Magmen. Die enge räumliche und zeitliche Beziehung der transitionalen Basalt-peralkalischen Rhyolithabfolge mit kalkalkalischen Vulkaniten spiegelt die komplexen und dynamischen geotektonischen Vorgänge im östlichen Papua Neuguinea wieder. Der Wechsel von kalkalkalischem zu alkalischem Magmatismus könnte durch die Umstellung von Kompressions- auf Extensionstektonik, die mit der Verlagerung des westlich gelegenen Woodlark Spreadingzenrums in das östliche Papua Neugiunea in Beziehung gebracht wird, erklärt werden.
    Notes: Summary Sr, Nd and Pb isotope data are presented for a transitional basalt-peralkaline rhyolite suite, and spatially associated calc-alkaline rhyolites from the D'Entrecasteaux Islands, eastern Papua New Guinea. Both suites have a typical convergent margin geochemical signature (i.e. high Zr/Nb, La/Nb, and low Ta/Yb compared with OIB). The transitional basalt-peralkaline rhyolite suite and calc-alkaline rhyolites have a restricted range of206Pb/204Pb (18.522–18.661),207Pb/204Pb (15.543–15.631), and208Pb/204Pb (38.31–38.63) values which overlap the fields of volcanics from Tonga, Fiji, and Pacific MORB and sediments. The transitional basalt-peralkaline rhyolite suite also displays a restricted range of143Nd/144Nd values (0.513053–0.512984), but a much broader range of87Sr/86Sr (0.703989–0.70585) values. The latter reflects uncertainties in the ages of samples with very high87Rb/86Sr values and the effects of Sr exchange with seawater. The calc-alkaline rhyolites have consistently lower143Nd/144Nd values (0.512923—0.512867), and a more restricted range of87Sr/86Sr values (0.703864–0.704028) compared with the transitional basalt-peralkaline rhyolite suite. The isotopic and trace element data are consistent with the interpretation that the calc-alkaline rhyolites were produced by partial melting of a young arc protocrust, whereas associated calc-alkaline basic and intermediate magmas were derived from a depleted mantle source which previously had been modified by subduction along the Trobriand Trough. The transitional basalt-peralkaline rhyolite suite was produced by extensive magmatic differentiation of a parental transitional basalt magma in a relatively shallow magma chamber. The parent magma was produced by partial melting of either a depleted MORB-source mantle or a less-depleted OIB-type source which previously had been modified by subduction processes. The hy- and ol-normative transitional basalt magmas were probably generated in response to lithospheric thinning at somewhat higher pressures than qz-normative calc-alkaline magmas. The close spatial and temporal relationship between the transitional basalt-peralkaline rhyolite suite and the tale-alkaline volcanics reflects the complex and dynamic tectonic setting of eastern Papua and the D'Entrecasteaux Islands. In particular, the change from calc-alkaline to alkaline magmatism appears to have occurred following a change from compressional to extensional tectonics resulting from the westward propogation of the Woodlark spreading ridge into eastern Papua.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Das spreading centre des Nord-Fidschi-Beckens setzt sich an seinem südlichsten Ende in die Inselbogen-Kruste des noch wenig bekannten Hunter-Rückens fort. Wir definieren 9 magmatische Gruppen auf der Basis der Hauptelement-Zusammensetzung von Gläsern und der Zusammensetzung von Olivin und Spinell in Proben die das Forschungsschiff R/V Akademiker A. Nesmeyanov von 26 Stellen im Jahr 1990 aufgesammelt hat. Zu diesen gehören Gruppen von Boniniten, Inselbogentholeiiten (IAT), Basalten zentralozeanischer Rücken (MORB), angereicherte zentralozeanische Rücken (E-MORB), Olivin-porphyritische Andesite und basaltische Andesite, sowie Na-Rhyolite. Primitive Laven mit Olivinkristallen, die reich an Forsterit-Komponenten sind, kommen in allen diesen Gruppen, mit Ausnahme der Rhyolite, vor. Wir legen über 100 Glas-Analysen von Gesteinen aus diesem Gebiet vor und über 300 Olivin-Spinell-Paare für Vertreter aller der hier identifizierten magmatischen Gruppen, mit Ausnahme der Natriumrhyolite. Die MORB in diesem Gebiet sind wahrscheinlich an dem aktiven Spreading Center im Südteil des Nord-Fidschi-Beckens entstanden. Das nebeneinander Vorkommen von seichten heißen MORB-Quellen Diapiren, die MORB in diesem Gebiet erzeugen, und der Sub-Inselbogen, wasserhaltige, refraktäre obere Mantel unter dem Hunter Rücken führen zu geeigneten petrogenetischen Bedingungen für die Entstehung einer Vielfalt von Magmatypen, von Inselbogentholeiiten bis zu sehr Kalziumreichen Boniniten. Die letzteren wurden in 11 Dredge-Proben gefunden. Die E-MORS Laven, die aus dem extremen Südteil des Nord-Fidschi-Beckens entnommen wurden, sind im wesentlichen mit jenen identisch, die aus der benachbarten älteren Kruste des Süd-Fidschi-Beckens stammen. Es wird vermutet, daß die letzteren entweder aus dem Süd-Fidschi-Becken während einer Episode obliger Subduktion, die in den letzten 5 Millionen Jahren zur Entstehung des Hunter Ridge geführt hat, abgeschert wurden, oder auch daß Teile der Kruste des Süd-Fidschi-Beckens in das Nord-Fidschi-Becken inkorporiert wurden als Subduktionszonen gegenüber dem Vanuato-Bogen sich nach Süden fortbewegten.
    Notes: Summary At its southernmost end, the main spreading centre of the North Fiji Basin is propagating into arc crust of the poorly-known Hunter Ridge. We define nine magmatic groups from major element glass chemistry and olivine and spinel compositions in samples dredged from twenty six sites in this area by the “R/V Academician A. Nesmeyanov” in 1990. These include groups of boninites, island arc tholeiites (IAT), mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB), enriched mid-ocean ridge basalts (E-MORB), olivine porphyritic andesites and basaltic andesite and Na-rhyolites. Primitive lavas containing highly forsteritic olivine phenocrysts are common in all the groups, except for the rhyolites. We report over 100 glass analyses for dredged rocks from this region, and about 300 olivine-spinel pairs for representatives of all the magmatic groups identified, except the Na-rhyolites. The MORB in this region are probably produced at the propagating spreading centre in the southern part of the North Fiji Basin. Juxtaposition of shallow, hot MORB-source diapirs supplying the MORB in this area, and the sub-arc damp, refractory upper mantle beneath the Hunter Ridge, provides suitable petrogenetic conditions to produce a range of magma types, from island arc tholeiites through to high-Ca boninites. The latter were recovered in eleven dredges. The E-MORB lavas recovered from the extreme southern margin of the North Fiji Basin are shown to be essentially identical to those dredged from adjacent older South Fiji Basin crust. It is hypothesized that the former were either scraped off the South Fiji Basin crust during an episode of oblique subduction that may have generated the Hunter Ridge during the last 5 Myr, or alternatively, that slices of the South Fiji Basin crust were trapped and incorporated into the North Fiji Basin as the subduction zones fronting the Vanuatu arc stepped or propagated southward.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Al-reiche Spinelle (100Cr/(Cr + Al) 〈 5, Al2O3 〉 50 Gew.%) sind in alpinen Peridotiten, in terrestrischen und lunaren mafischen und ultramafischen Kumulaten und in manchen metamorphen Gesteinen weit verbreitet, aber sie scheinen in terrestrischen, vulkanischen Gesteinen selten zu sein. Wir beschreiben hier das Vorkommen von Al-reichen Spinell-Inklusionen in Olivinkristallen von Inselbogen-Vulkaniten von 5 neuen Lokalitäten: Bukit Mapas (Sumatra) und Ost-Bali im Sunda-Bogen und die Inseln Epi, Merelava und Ambrym im Vanuatu-Bogen. Relativ Cr-reiche Spinelle kommen häufiger auch als Einschlüsse in denselben Olivin-Kristallen vor, und es scheint, daß Chrom-arme Aluminiumspinelle im Ungleichgewicht mit ihren basaltischen Mutterschmelzen stehen. In den untersuchten Gesteinen kommen Al-reiche Spinelle zusammen mit Silikatgläsern und Aluminium-reichen Klinopyroxenen in Schmelzeinschlüssen in Olivinen vor. Diese Assoziation weist auf einen Ursprung hin, der Kontamination durch lokalisierte Al-reiche “pockets” von Schmelze involviert; dies steht im Gegensatz zu einem Ursprung als Xenokristalle. Wir schlagen zwei Mechanismen vor, die diese Aluminium-reiche Schmelze in basaltischen Magmakammern erzeugen können: (1) lokalisierte Produktion von Aluminium-reicher Schmelze durch vollkommene Auflösung von assimilierten gabbroischen Gesteinen aus der unteren Kruste. In diesem Modell kann die Aluminium-reiche Schmelze Al-reiche Spinelle kristallisieren, die dann anschließend als feste Einschlüsse von Phenokristallen in der basaltischen Mutterschmelze eingefangen werden oder als Schmelzeinschlüsse, in denen Al-reiche Spinelle und Al-reiche Klinopyroxene als Tochterphasen kristallisieren. (2) Inkongruenter Zerfall von Amphibol in Amphibol-reichen Kumulaten in Magmakammern unter Inselbögen oder unter OIB-Vulkanen. Die letztgenannte Reaktion erzeugt eine Schmelze mit ungefähr 20–22% Al2O3, Aluminium-haltigen Klinopyroxen, Al-reichen Spinell und Olivin. Mischung zwischen diesen Produkten des Zerfalls von Amphibol und basaltischer Mutterschmelze kann während der ganzen Evolution eines magmatischen Systems stattfinden, aber besonders während der Zufuhr neuer heißer Magnesium-reicher Basalte. Aluminium-haltige Spinelle und Klinopyroxene, die während des Zerfalls von Amphibol entstanden sind oder vielleicht aus einer Aluminium-haltigen Schmelze in derselben Reaktion produziert wurden, werden während der Neuzufuhr in das Magma inkorporiert und im Anschluß daran, zusammen mit den koexistierenden Cr-Spinellen, von kristallisierendem Olivin und Klinopyroxen eingefangen.
    Notes: Summary Al-rich spinels (100Cr/(Cr + Al) 〈 5, Al2O3 〉 50 wt%) are common in alpine peridotites, both terrestrial and lunar mafic and ultramafic cumulates, and in certain metamorphic rocks, but they are apparently rare in terrestrial volcanic rocks. Here we describe the occurrence of Al-rich spinel inclusions in olivine phenocrysts in island arc volcanic rocks from five new localities: Bukit Mapas (Sumatra) and eastern Bali in the Sunda arc, and Epi, Merelava, and Ambrym islands in the Vanuatu arc. More commonly, relatively Cr-rich spinels also occur as inclusions in the saine olivine phenocrysts, and it appears that the Cr-poor aluminous spinels must be in disequilibrium with the host basaltic melts. In the rocks studied, Al-rich spinels also coexist with trapped silicate glasses and highly aluminous clinopyroxene in melt inclusions in olivine. This paragenesis suggests an origin involving contamination by localized Al-rich melt pockets as opposed to a xenocrystic origin. Two mechanisms to produce this high-Al melt in basaltic magma chambers are suggested: (1) localized high-Al melt production by complete breakdown of assimilated lower crustal gabbroic rocks. In this model the high-Al melt may crystallise Al-rich spinels which are subsequently trapped as solid inclusions by phenocryst phases of the host basaltic melt or may be trapped as melt inclusions in which Al-rich spinels and Al-rich clinopyroxene crystallise as daughter phases, and (2) in congruent breakdown of amphibole in amphibole-rich cumulates in sub-arc, or sub-OIB volcano magma chambers. The latter reaction produces a melt with ∼ 20–22% of Al2O3, aluminous clinopyroxene, Al-rich spinel and olivine. Mixing between these amphibole breakdown products and host basaltic melt may occur throughout the evolution of a magmatic system, but particularly during recharge with hot magnesian basalt batches. Aluminous spinels and aluminous clinopyroxene produced during amphibole breakdown, or perhaps crystallised from aluminous melt produced in the saine reaction, are incorporated into the magma during recharge, and subsequently trapped, together with the coexisting Cr-spinels, by crystallising olivine and clinopyroxene.

    Notes: Abstract A detailed examination of the hypothesis that high-alumina basalts (HAB) in island arcs are primary magmas derived by 50–60% partial melting of subducted ocean crust eclogite shows that this model is unlikely to be viable. Evidence suggests that the overwhelming majority of arc HAB are porphyritic lavas, enriched in Al2O3 either by protracted prior crystallization of olivine and clinopyroxene, or by plagioclase phenocryst accumulation in magmas of basaltic andesite to dacite composition. Experimentally-determined phase relationships of such plagioclase-enriched (non-liquid) compositions have little bearing on the petrogenesis of arc magmas, and do not rule out the possibility that arc HAB can be derived by fractionation of more primitive arc lavas. Although models invoking eclogite-melting can match typical arc HAB REE patterns, calculations indicate that the Ni and Cr contents of proposed Aleutian primary HAB are many times lower than such models predict. In contrast, Ni vs Sc and Cr vs Sc trends for arc HAB are readily explained by olivine (+Cr-sp) and clinopyroxene-dominated fractionation from more primitive arc magmas. GENMIX major element modelling of several HAB compositions as partial melts of MORB eclogite, using appropriate experimentally (26–34 kb)-determined garnet and omphacite compositions yields exceptionally poor matches, especially for CaO, Na2O, MgO and Al2O3. These mismatches are easily explained if the HAB are plagioclase-accumulative. Groundmasses of arc HAB are shown to vary from basaltic andesite to dacite in composition. Crystal fractionation driving liquid compositions toward dacite involves important plagioclase separation, resulting in development of significant negative Eu anomalies in more evolved lavas. Plagioclase accumulation in such evolved liquids tends to diminish or eliminate negative Eu anomalies. Therefore, the absence of positive Eu anomaly in a plagioclase-phyric HAB does not indicate that plagioclase has not accumulated in that lava. In addition, we show that plagioclase phenocrysts in arc HAB are not in equilibrium with the liquids in which they were carried (groundmass). Exceptional volumes of picrite and olivine basalt occur in the Solomons and Vanuatu arcs; the presence in lavas from these and other arcs (Aleutian, Tonga) of olivine phenocrysts to Fo94, finds no ready explanation in the primary eclogite-derived HAB model. We suggest that most lavas in intra-oceanic arcs are derived from parental magmas with 〉10% MgO; fractionation of olivine (+Cr-sp) and clinopyroxene drives liquids to basalt compositions with 〈7% MgO, but plagioclase nucleation is delayed by their low but significant (〈1%?) H2O contents. Thus evolved liquid compositions in the basaltic andesite—andesite range may achieve relatively high Al2O3 contents (〈17.5%). The majority of arc basalts, however, have Al2O3 contents in excess of 18%, reflecting plagioclase accumulation. We give new experimental data to show that HAB liquids may be generated by anhydrous, low-degree (〈10%) partial melting of peridotite at P〈18 kb. Relative to arc HAB, these experimental melts have notably higher Mg#(69–72) and are in equilibrium with olivine Fo87–89. Only further detailed trace element modelling will show if they might be parental magmas for some arc HAB.

    Notes: Abstract The field setting, petrography, mineralogy, and geochemistry of a suite of picrite basalts and related magnesian olivine tholeiites (New Georgia arc picrites) from the New Georgia Volcanics, Kolo caldera in the active ensimatic Solomon Islands arc are presented. These lavas, with an areal extent in the order of 1002 km and almost 1 km thick in places, are located close to the intersection of the Woodlark spreading zone with the Pacific plate margin. They contain abundant olivine (Fo94-75) and diopside (Cr2O3 1.1-0.4%, Al2O3 1–3%), and spinels characterised by a large range in Cr/(Cr+Al) (0.85–0.46) and Mg/(Mg+ Fe++) (0.65−0.1). The spinels are Fe+++ rich, with Fe+++/ (Fe++++Cr+Al) varying from 0.06 to 1.0. A discrete group of spinels with the highest Cr/(Cr+Al) (0.83–0.86) and lowest Fe+++ contents are included in the most Mg-rich olivine (Fo91–94) and both may be xenocrystal in origin. The lavas, which range between 10–28% MgO, define linear trends on oxide (element) — MgO diagrams and these trends are interpreted as olivine (∼0.9) clinopyroxene (∼0.1) control lines. For the reconstructed parent magma composition of these arc picrites, ratios involving CaO, Al2O3, TiO2, Zr, V and Sc are very close to chondritic. REE patterns are slightly LREE — enriched ((La/Sm)N 1.3–1.43) and HREE are flat. All lavas show marked enrichments in K, Rb, Sr, Ba, and LREE relative to MORB with similar MgO contents, but the TiO2 content of the proposed parent magma is close to those of postulated primary MORB liquids. It is proposed that the arc parent magma was produced by partial melting of sub-oceanic upper mantle induced by the introduction of LILE — enriched hydrous fluids derived by dehydration and/or partial melting of subducted ocean crust and possibly minor sediments.

    Notes: Abstract Active spreading ridges in the North Fiji Basin range from well-developed stable ridges where largescale mantle upwelling is in progress to proto-ridges where spreading is incipient. South of 17°S, where the central ridge of the North Fiji Basin has a bathymetric profile normally expected of a fast-spreading, steadystate mid-ocean ridge, basalts are evolved N-type MORBs. North of 17°S, where the central ridge is propagating northward into old North Fiji Basin crust and spreading is in the initial stages, two types of basalt have been recovered: N-type MORBs from this northern arm of the central ridge are believed to be samples of older North Fiji Basin crust; basalts with transitional alkalic chemistry (up to 0.5% Ne in the Norm) and characterized by strong relative enrichments in Rb, Ba, K, Nb, La, Ce, Sr, P, Zr, and Ti are believed to be associated with incipient rifting. Among the latter group are compositions that are intermediate between transitional alkalic types and MORBs and these are geochemically similar to the back-arc basin (BABB) magma type defined by Sinton and Fryer (1987) from a study of Mariana back arc basin basalts. Dredges along the South Pandora Ridge, a transform zone characterized by short spreading segments, are dominated by basalts that are enriched in large-ion lithophile and high field strength minor and trace elements and compositions range from types resembling ocean island tholeiites to transitional alkalic varieties. Basalts from Rotuma are regarded as alkalic end-members of the South Pandora Ridge magmatic spectrum. In areas of the North Fiji Basin where relatively fast spreading must be accompanied by largescale asthenospheric upwelling, depleted (N-type) MORBs dominate, whereas in areas of slow mantle upwelling, or where some other tectonic effect (e.g. a transform fault) causes a transient thermal disturbance within the lithosphere or upper asthenosphere, enriched (alkalic) magmas either dominate or make a significant and noticeable contribution to the overall chemical characteristics of basalts being erupted. The MORBs have a depleted asthenospheric source, and the alkalic component is believed to derive from an enriched lithospheric or shallow asthenospheric source. The BABB magma type may simply be part of the spectrum of mixed magmas that can occur in the transitional tectonic settings represented by the early development of most back-arc basins.

    Notes: Abstract Rocks with boninitic affinities have been recognised in a number of “ophiolites”, including the Cambrian Heathcote and Mt Wellington Greenstone Belts of Victoria. Boninites and high-Mg andesites from the Heathcote Greenstone Belt show a restricted range of initial ɛ Nd values of between +3.3 to +5.8. Extremely refractory boninites from the Mt Wellington Greenstone Belt have ɛ Nd ranging from +1.3 to −9. Ti/Zr is positively correlated with Sm/Nd with the Heathcote lavas generally possessing greater depletion of Ti and enrichment of Zr relative to the middle and heavy REE with increasing LREE/HREE. These data are consistent with the generation of boninites by partial melting of refractory peridotite following invasion by LREE- and Zr-enriched, low ɛ Nd fluids. Tholeiites overlying the boninites in both greenstone belts have flat REE patterns and ɛ Nd∼+5, lower than that anticipated for lavas derived from depleted MORB source reservoirs in the Cambrian, suggesting that their source was also contaminated by a LREE-enriched, low ɛ Nd component similar to that involved in the generation of the Howqua boninites. The added components have characteristics compatible with their derivation from subducted altered oceanic crust and/or from wet subducted sediments. The identification of boninites and other low-Ti lavas in the Victorian greenstone belts is strong evidence for island arc development in southeastern Australia during the Lower Cambrian and provides further support for a subduction-related origin for many ophiolites.

    Notes: Abstract Seven years of daily gas chromatographic measurements of CCl4 at the five globally distributed ALE/GAGE surface sites are reported. It is determined that CCl4 has been accumulating in the atmosphere at a rate of 1.3±0.1%/yr over the period 1978–1985 and that the releases of CCl4 into the atmosphere have remained fairly constant, with the smallest releases in 1981–1982. Using an inversion scheme based on a nine box model of the atmosphere, we infer a CCl4 lifetime of approximately 40 yr, an inventory on 1 July 1978 of (2.08±0.07)×109 kg and an average rate of release over the period 1978–1985 of (0.9±0.9)×107 kg/yr. These results produce excellent agreement with a release scenario derived from global production estimates for CCl4 and the major CCl4 byproduct, the chlorofluorocarbons. However, to obtain this consistency, it is necessary that our current ALE/GAGE absolute calibration standard be reduced approximately 25% thus bringing it into agreement with measurements by Yokohata et al. (1985) and Hanst et al. (1975).

    Notes: Abstract New observational data on CH4, CO and CH3CCl3 in the southern hemisphere are reported. The data are analysed for long term trends and seasonal cycles. CH3CCl3 data are used to scale the OH fields incorporated in a two dimensional model, which in turn, is used to constrain the magnitude of a global CH4 source function. The possible causes of observed seasonality of CH3CCl3, CH4 and CO are identified, and several other aspects of observed CH4 variability are discussed. Possible future research directions are also given.
