    Abstract: This book illustrates the first connection between the map user community and the developers of digital map processing technologies by providing several applications, challenges, and best practices in working with historical maps. After the introduction chapter, in this book, Chapter 2 presents a variety of existing applications of historical maps to demonstrate varying needs for processing historical maps in scientific studies (e.g., thousands of historical maps from a map series vs. a few historical maps from various publishers and with different cartographic styles). Chapter 2 also describes case studies introducing typical types of semi-automatic and automatic digital map processing technologies. The case studies showcase the strengths and weaknesses of semi-automatic and automatic approaches by testing them in a symbol recognition task on the same scanned map. Chapter 3 presents the technical challenges and trends in building a map processing, modeling, linking, and publishing framework. The framework will enable querying historical map collections as a unified and structured spatiotemporal source in which individual geographic phenomena (extracted from maps) are modeled (described) with semantic descriptions and linked to other data sources (e.g., DBpedia, a structured version of Wikipedia). Chapter 4 dives into the recent advancement in deep learning technologies and their applications on digital map processing. The chapter reviews existing deep learning models for their capabilities on geographic feature extraction from historical maps and compares different types of training strategies. A comprehensive experiment is described to compare different models and their performance. Historical maps are fascinating to look at and contain valuable retrospective place information difficult to find elsewhere. However, the full potential of historical maps has not been realized because the users of scanned historical maps and the developers of digital map processing technologies are from a wide range of disciplines and often work in silos. Each chapter in this book can be read individually, but the order of chapters in this book helps the reader to first understand the “product requirements” of a successful digital map processing system, then review the existing challenges and technologies, and finally follow the more recent trend of deep learning applications for processing historical maps. The primary audience for this book includes scientists and researchers whose work requires long-term historical geographic data as well as librarians. The secondary audience includes anyone who loves maps!

    Description: The Regional Arctic System Model (RASM) is a fully coupled limited-domain climate system model that has been used for modeling and prediction of Arctic climate change at time scales from weeks to decades. Its pan-Arctic domain extends south to ~30〈sup〉o〈/sup〉N in the North Pacific and to ~40〈sup〉o〈/sup〉N in the North Atlantic oceans. The RASM ocean and sea ice model components are configured on rotated sphere meshes with the default configuration of 1/12〈sup〉o〈/sup〉 (~9.3km), while the atmosphere and land components are configured on a 50-km grid. Its boundary conditions along the lateral boundaries and in the upper atmosphere are derived either from global atmospheric reanalyses or from Earth System Model (ESM) simulations. RASM hindcasts allow comparisons of results with observations in place and time, which is a unique capability not available in ESMs. Within this framework, RASM has been used to downscale output from three global models: the National Center for Environmental Predictions Coupled Forecast System version 2 (CFSv2), the National Center for Atmospheric Research Community Earth System Model initialized Decadal Predictability Large Ensemble (CESM-DPLE), and the Department of Energy Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM). Forced with CFSv2, RASM has produced probabilistic intra-annual forecasts each month for the past 4+ years. The CESM-DPLE and E3SM output was used for downscaling multi decadal simulations. Here, we present a review of some of these results, including evaluation of RASM sea ice predictive skill in comparison with observations and relative to the original global output using the common metrics to quantify model skill.

    Description: The rate of warming in the Arctic has been much faster than the global average and the decline of sea ice decline has been accelerated. The “low-ice regime” in the future is likely to happen and impacts the Arctic environment, especially around the Arctic coasts. Hence, it is becoming increasingly critical to foresee changes in Arctic sea ice and climate states as well as their potential impacts to guide human activities from natural resource management to risk assessment decisions. While climate models project a continuous decline of sea ice on a decadal time scale, the advancement of reliable predictive skills in seasonal sea ice forecasts remains challenging. Here, we use a state-of-the-art numerical model, Regional Arctic System Model (RASM), which forecasts Arctic sea ice at time scales from weeks up to six months. RASM is a fully-coupled regional climate system model, consisting of the atmosphere, ocean, sea ice, and land components, coupled through the Community Earth System Model flux coupler. The ocean and sea ice configurations include the horizontal resolution of 1/12 degree with 45-vertical levels and 5-thickness categories, respectively. The atmosphere is configured on a 50-km grid with 40 vertical levels and dynamically downscaled using the Climate Forecasting System (CFS) Reanalysis (CFSR) and its version 2 (CFSv2). This presentation summarizes our results of summer sea ice predictions from 2011 to 2022. In particular, the effects of lead time and initial conditions are investigated on the quantitative skill of seasonal predictability of Arctic sea ice.

    Description: A controversy currently exists regarding the number of Toba eruptive events represented in the tephra occurrences across peninsular India. Some claim the presence of a single bed, the 75,000-yr-old Toba tephra; others argue that dating and archaeological evidence suggest the presence of earlier Toba tephra. Resolution of this issue was sought through detailed geochemical analyses of a comprehensive suite of samples, allowing comparison of the Indian samples to those from the Toba caldera in northern Sumatra, Malaysia, and, importantly, the sedimentary core at ODP Site 758 in the Indian Ocean - a core that contains several of the earlier Toba tephra beds. In addition, two samples of Toba tephra from western India were dated by the fission-track method. The results unequivocally demonstrate that all the presently known Toba tephra occurrences in peninsular India belong to the 75,000 yr B.P. Toba eruption. Hence, this tephra bed can be used as an effective tool in the correlation and dating of late Quaternary sedimentary sequences across India and it can no longer be used in support of a middle Pleistocene age for associated Acheulian artifacts.
