Notizen: Rayon/nylon sheath/core composite fibers were produced using a wire coating-type process. Fumaric acid (FA) was chosen as an adhesion promoter to pretreat the nylon core fiber before rayon coating to improve the adhesion between skin and core. Different FA pretreatment concentrations and times were used and the effects of the pretreatment conditions on the adhesion were evaluated. A fiber pull adhesion test technique was developed to determine the interfacial shear strength of the composite fibers. The results indicated that the interfacial adhesion in the rayon/nylon composite fibers was significantly improved for specific sets of FA application conditions. Adhesion results were confirmed with electron microscopy. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: Previous work by this research group has shown that the use of a lubricated skin/core flow of polymer melts and a hyperbolic converging die results in an essentially pure elongational flow at a constant elongational strain rate in the core. The previous work was carried out on a laboratory-scale coextrusion system in a planar slit die; tracer particles and an image analysis system were used to confirm the predicted behavior. In this work, the technique was implemented first on the coextruder assembly, as a planar elongational rheometer, and then on a commercial capillary rheometer, as a uniaxial elongational rheometer for polymer melts. The later is achieved by replacing the standard capillary die with a hyperbolic axisymmetric die. A two-laycred billet is prepared for placement in the rheometer barrel by completely encapsulating the core polymer (the polymer to be analyzed) with a low-viscosity polyethylene skin. Commercial grades of polypropylenes, syndiotactic polystyrene, and nylon-66 were analyzed using this technique. Elongational viscosity at high extensional rates can be determined with this method; values in excess of 500 s-1 have already been achieved. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: This study demonstrates that it is possible to extrude highly oriented polyethylene fibers using only a plasticating single screw extruder, specially designed and operated dies, and a simple take up mechanism. The degree of orientation achieved is as high as that achieved in solid state extrusion studies but accomplished at a fraction of the pressure. The degree of orientation is significantly greater than that of commercial grade fibers. The orientation is developed in the elongational flow of the “wine glass stem” region preceding the die entrance and is retained by crystallization in the die. Crystallization is inhibited in the pre-die region by maintaining a temperature above the effective melting point of the flowing, oriented (hence lowered entropy) melt.

Notizen: The processing of polymers typically includes steps involving heat transfer, such as quenching and crystallization. The mechanical properties of a polymer are thus affected by processing conditions, such as the amount of time spent by each portion of the polymer at each temperature in the processing sequence. This paper presents the results of a mathematical modeling study of the unsteady-state temperatures inside a crystallizing polymer during quenching. This model differs from usual methods in including temperature dependence of induction times and kinetic processes, and in not treating the polymer as a simple, small molecule system. The model permits the prediction of the final morphological distribution within the polymer. Use of the model will aid in tailoring processing conditions to produce a product with specified morphology. The method is applicable to a wide variety of problems in polymer processing, particularly for those polymers which exhibit crystallization.

Notizen: Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) was solid state extruded to fiber form at temperatures between 250 and 300°C and at pressures between 7000 and 15,000 psi. The PTFE fibers had a diameter of 0.0502 inches and the reduction ratio for extrusion was 55.8. The fibers were tested for mechanical strength, and examined with a scanning electron microscope, which revealed a fibrous structure at high magnifications. The melting point of the fibers was 342°C by differential scanning calorimetry. The tensile properties were enhanced with an increase in processing temperature and pressure, the highest properties resulting from an extrusion temperature of 300°C and pressures greater than 10,000 psi. A tensile strength of 5500 psi and a secant modulus of 250,000 psi were obtained.

Notizen: Isothermal crystallization of poly[3,3-bis(chloromethyl)oxacyclobutane] and poly-(ethylene terephthalate) from the quenched glassy state gave small lamellae approximately 1000-2000 A. in lateral dimension with a constant thickness of about 100 A. The maximum primary nuclei density for crystallization slightly above the glass transition temperature, Tg, was 1010 greater than frequently observed during spherulitic growth from the melt. Since the lamellae grow at a linear rate, the crystallization process could be described by the Avrami theory for two-dimensional growth with a constant nuclei density. By assuming that crystallization near Tg is diffusion-controlled, bulk crystallization rate data were analyzed to obtain self-diffusion coefficients whose activation energies were similar to reported values for other polymers.

Notizen: The objective of this research is to demonstrate the application of a general model of reaction injection molding (RIM) to a complex shaped mold part. Using the fundamental physical and chemical properties of the RIM system, prediction of RIM moldability can be made. The numerical techniques used in this research are presented in a previous paper (1). The rigorous modeling of the transport processes and the dynamics of the filling front for a particular application are described in this work.

Notizen: In this research a model to simulate both the filling the curing stages of a reaction injection molding (RIM) process in complex three-dimensional molds is developed. This model can be used to predict not only the temperature and conversion changes with time but also the front position during filling. Using given physical and chemical properties of the RIM system, moldability can be determined in advance. The numerical techniques used in this research include adaptation of the SIMPLE algorithm developed by Patankar for a moving-front, two-phase system with non-negligible inertial effects, and exothermic chemical reaction. The model predictions of temperature and conversion compare favorably with available data on simple two-dimensional molds. The ability of the model to predict the dynamics of filling in more complicated molds was verified by comparison to mold filling experiments with water and a polyurethane foam.
