Notes: We present a novel semiconductor quantum well (QW) structure consisting of alternating (In,Ga)As and Ga(P,As,Sb) layers grown pseudomorphically on a GaAs substrate by all-solid-source molecular beam epitaxy. The band gap of the QW is determined by the thickness and composition of both types of layers and can be varied from 1.1 to 1.55 μm. Calculations show that the observed strong room-temperature photoluminescence in this wavelength range can be explained by a type-II transition in the QW. Structural investigations by reflection high-energy electron diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and secondary ion mass spectroscopy confirm a triple layer structure with laterally modulated composition. Photoluminescence measurements reveal a linewidth of 50 meV at 1.3 μm and a luminescence decay time of 240 ps. Our investigations demonstrate the feasibility of this materials system for vertical cavity surface-emitting lasers and other optoelectronic devices on GaAs. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Room temperature photoluminescence at wavelengths between 1.2 and 1.5 μm has been observed in samples consisting of InGaAs/GaPAsSb quantum well structures grown on GaAs. The emission wavelength is varied primarily by changing the composition within the GaPAsSb layer. It is proposed that such long wavelength emission results from a spatially indirect interband transition in the type-II quantum wells where the electron and hole wave functions have large spatial overlap. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Low-energy electron diffraction was used to study the annealing effects of Ag ultrathin films on the surface of one monolayer Co/Pt(111). The intensity of the specular beam versus temperature has an unusual minimum point and maximum point. Further studies by Auger electron spectroscopy indicate that the adatoms of Ag become a best ordered state after the formation of Co–Pt alloy is complete. The new order state comes from the structure change of Co/Pt(111) and the smaller lattice mismatch between Ag and Pt. The electron density of states of d band shifts to a lower binding energy when the system starts to form the Co–Pt alloy measured by ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy. The chemical compositions at interfaces of the thin film were investigated by a depth profile before and after the annealing. The sputtering rates of Ag on the topmost layer of the unannealed film and the annealed film were calculated and comparatively studied. A shadow effect causes the different sputtering rates of these two ultrathin films. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A pluripotent cell line, sea bream embryonic stem-like cells (SBES1), was developed from blastula-stage embryos of the cultured red sea bream, Chrysophrys major. The SBES1 cells were cultivated in Dulbecco's modified eagles medium (DMEM) medium supplemented with foetal bovine serum, marine fish serum, fish embryo extract, selenium, basic fibroblast growth factor and leukemia inhibitory factor. They were small and round or polygonal, and grew actively and stabely in culture. The cells exhibited a positive alkaline phosphatase activity upon histochemical staining. When the cells were treated with all-trans retinoic acid, they differentiated into various types including neuron-like, neuroglia-like and muscle-like cells, suggesting that the SBES1 cells remained pluripotent in culture. Chromosome analysis revealed that SBES1 cells had a normal diploid karyotype with 2n = 2st + 46t. At present, SBES1 cells have been cultured for 〉180 days with more than 60 passages. High survival rate has been obtained after cryopreservation of cell cultures. This embryonic cell line may potentially be used for the production of transgenic red sea bream.

Notes: SUMMARY— Deterioration of extractable color pigments in dehydrated, ground chili peppers during storage was shown to be an auto-oxidative process having the kinetics of a second order reaction. Consequently, the reaction rate constant, k21 was used to evaluate the effect of a number of variables, such as moisture content, storage atmosphere and ethoxyquin treatment. In an oxygen-containing atmosphere, the rate constants for color deterioration varied with moisture content. The k2 value was 2 to 3 times higher at 4 to 5% moisture content than at 8 to 9%. Treatment with 100 ppm ethoxyquin afforded both substantial protection against color deterioration and an improvement of the surface color of the paprika in storage. Such treatment was most effective in low-moisture chili peppers. The color stability of several varieties was compared under controlled conditions. Some varieties were found to be more stable than others.

Notes: The monoclinic anthracene crystal is used as an example to demonstrate the feasibility of optimizing the orientation of molecules in the unit cell by matching calculated and experimental refractivity ellipsoids using a simplex algorithm. The calculated refractivity ellipsoid is determined by use of an empirical formula using bond directional polarizabilities. Optimization of the molecular orientations to provide the best fit to the experimental ellipsoid starting from several assumed orientations results in fits for which the maximum deviation from the experimental molecular orientation was no more than 10°. The method can be applied to other monoclinic molecular crystals directly and could be extended to other crystal systems with anisotropic optical properties.

Notes: A beam of polarized light propagating along the helical axis of α-quartz interacts with SiO4/2 groups consecutively. When a skew matrix of a resultant dielectric tensor is compared to a skew matrix of a rotation matrix, the polarizability components of an SiO4/2 group, with two sets of results, may be derived since the specific rotation along the helical axis is known for 5892.9 Å light at 293 K. Both sets have the same mean value for the components. The mean is close to an empirical result based on the bond refractivity of Si–O. In comparison with the optical rotation sign (+ or −) along the optic axis, an opposite rotation sign is derived along the directions perpendicular to both the optic axis and any diad axis. In α-quartz, the inactive directions 33.83° from its optic axis are interpreted. The diad-axis directions are predicted to be inactive directions. Bunn's empirical formula is interpreted.
