    Notes: Monotonic and cyclic fatigue behavior of single fibers or fiber fabrics are of significant interest, since fiber assemblies or fiber-reinforced composite materials in structural applications are often subjected to cyclic loading. Studying the cyclic fatigue behavior of fibers is particularly difficult because of their small diameter (∼10 μm) and high aspect ratio. In this paper, we report results of monotonic tension and tension–tension fatigue behavior of two sol–gel-derived ceramic fibers: Al2O3–SiO2–B2O3 (Nextel 312) and Al2O3 (Nextel 610). Nextel 312 exhibited a great deal of variability in tensile strength, reflected by a Weibull modulus of 4.6, versus Nextel 610, which had a Weibull modulus of 10.5. Our experiments showed clearly that cyclic loading was more damaging than static loading and, thus, resulted in a lower cyclic fatigue life compared with static loading. The fracture behavior under fatigue loading was distinctly different from that under monotonic loading. It is believed that processing-induced flaws acted as crack initiation sites, and that the cyclic loading induced subcritical cracking, followed by coalescence of cracks immediately prior to failure.

    Notes: Abstract Nextel 480 is a polycrystalline essentially mullite fiber (70 wt.-% Al2O3+28 wt.-% SiO2+ 2 wt.-% B2O3). Different thicknesses of BN were applied as coatings on this fiber. Optical, scanning electron, and transmission electron microscopy were used to characterize the microstructure of the coatings and fibers. The effects of coating and high temperature exposure on the fiber strength were investigated using two-parameter Weibull distribution. TEM examination showed that the BN coating has a turbostratic structure, with the basal planes lying predominantly parallel to the fiber surface. Such an orientation of coating is desirable for easy crack deflection and subsequent fiber pullout in a composite. The BN coated Nextel 480 fiber showed that Weibull mean strength increased first and then decreased with increasing coating thickness. This was due to the surface flaw healing effect of the thin coatingup to 0.3 µm) while in the case of thick BN coating (1 µm), the soft nature of the coating material had a more dominant effect and resulted in a decrease of the fiber strength. High temperature exposure of Nextel 480 resulted in grain growth, which led to a strength loss.

    Notes: Abstract The ageing kinetics of a silicon carbide particle-reinforced Al-Li (8090) matrix composite and unreinforced alloy, both made by spray forming, were investigated. Ageing treatments, without any straining after solutionizing, and with a 2% plastic strain after solutionizing, were employed. The peak ageing times of the matrix in the composite was shorter than that of the unreinforced alloy. The enhanced hardening rate of the matrix in the composite was attributed to the higher dislocation density induced as a result of the plastic deformation occurring at the particle/matrix interface. This plastic deformation is a result of the large difference in the coefficient of thermal expansion between the particles and matrix. Subjecting the samples to a 2% plastic strain reduced the peak ageing times even further. The tensile strength of the composite samples was marginally higher than that of the unreinforced alloy. Samples subjected to 2% plastic straining prior to ageing also exhibited higher strength values. The strain to failure of all the samples did not recover in the over-aged state.

    Notes: Abstract The 2014 aluminum alloy reinforced with 0.1 and 0.15 volume fraction of alumina particles (VFAP) have been solutionized for a range of time from 1.5 to 20 h at 813 K. The effect of solutionizing time (ST) on the age hardening response of the composites has been studied and compared with the characteristics exhibited by the monolith. The results indicate that increasing the ST decreases the time required to get the peak hardness (TPH) values in the monolith but the composites do not show a systematic monotonic behavior. The TPH values first decrease and then increase with an increase in ST at an aging temperature of 473 K for the composite. It has been speculated that he ST influences the concentration of quenched-in vacancies and continued heating may affect the bonding between particles and matrix which can generate additional dislocations throughout the solutionizing process due to curvature effects.

    Notes: Abstract The thermal-expansion behaviour of a metallic-glass ribbon-reinforced glass-ceramic-matrix composite was studied. The coefficient of thermal expansion of such composites measured in the longitudinal direction was correlated with the volume fraction, the length and the width of the ribbon reinforcements. The experimentally measured values of the thermal-expansion coefficients were found to be in good agreement with a modified Schapery's equation. Formation of an oxide layer on the ribbon surface and other related phenomena occurring at elevated temperatures were also found to affect the thermal expansion of such composites, and these factors were accommodated into Schapery's equation by incorporating an empirical constant.

    Notes: Abstract Etch-pit studies of composites consisting of small volume fractions of tungsten wires into which a copper matrix had been introduced by vacuum infiltration showed the dislocation density in the single crystal matrix to increase with volume fraction of fibre and to rise to high values toward the fibre-matrix interface. The dislocation distributions, which resulted from strains arising due to differential shrinkage, were interpreted in terms of a contribution, independent of fibre fraction, due to transverse strains which fall off with distance from the fibre and a second one due to axial strain which increases with fibre fraction but is invariant with distance from the fibre. Part of the axial adjustment is accomplished by interface shear.
