Notes: The stability of a homogeneous plasma with currents along the magnetic field is investigated. It is found that electrons streaming along the magnetic field lines in a neutralizing positive ion background could excite lower-hybrid instability. The critical drift velocity should exceed the parallel phase velocity for instability: Vd〉ωr/k(parallel), where ωr is the lower-hybrid frequency (ΩeΩi)1/2. This condition is found to be easily met in the laboratory and space plasmas and is applicable both in the collisionless and collisional palsmas.

Notes: Abstract The film formation method has been successfully used to grow single crystals and other complex morphological features of low melting form (LMF) and high melting form (HMF) of trans-1,4-polyisoprene (TPIP). Below 40 °C dilute amyl acetate solution gave hexagonal shaped LMF crystals. Thick and elongated hexagonal shaped morphology was shown by HMF crystals at temperatures above 40 °C. Straight faces and sharp corners of the single crystals, and also of complex crystals, acquired round shapes when highly polydispersed TPIP was used for crystallization.

Notes: Abstract Single crystals of trans-1, 4-polyisoprene (TPIP) have been grown from dilute solutions in amyl acetate, n-heptane and n-butanol/n-heptane mixtures. Two samples of different molecular weights, and molecular-weight distribution have been used to demonstrate the effect of these molecular parameters on the shape of single crystals. The experiments suggested that crystallization of narrowly distributed polymer chains, irrespective of the molecular weight of the crystallizing species, will produce a hexagonal morphology. This narrow distribution of chains during crystallization can be achieved by starting with a sample of low polydispersity or using a solvent/non-solvent mixture for crystallization. If the chain-size distribution is not controlled, then at later stages of growth the heterogeneous mixture of chains will create a curvature on the {110} faces and produce oval-shaped lamellar platelets. Further, the crystal habits in the present work were found to be related to the solvent, molecular weight and molecular-weight distribution, rather than to the crystallization temperature.

Notes: Abstract The shear stability of drag reducing polymer-polymer and polymer-fibre mixtures has been studied at a Reynolds number of 14,000 using a turbulent flow rheometer. The ratio of the drag reduction at a particular pass number to the initial drag reduction has been determined for the mixtures at various pass numbers and compositions in order to determine the effect of composition on the shear stability of the mixtures. It has been found in both cases that when there is a drastic difference in the shear stabilities of the constituents of the mixtures, the incorporation of a small amount of the less shear stable drag reducing agent reduces the shear stability drastically. On the other hand, when the shear stability of the constituents are of the same order, there is only a proportional change in the shear stability of the mixtures on addition of one component to the other. A correlation between the decay coefficient of the mixture (R M ), the decay coefficients of the constituents (R 1 andR 2 ) and the weight fractions of the mixture components (W 1 andW 2) is suggested. An efficacious method for preparing asbestos fibre stock suspensions is also described.

Notes: An extensive study on the turbulent drag reduction caused by the various mixtures of polyacrylamide, purified guargum, xanthangum, and their graft copolymers has been conducted at low concentrations and Re = 14,000 using a turbulent flow rheometer. It has been found in most of the cases that the drag reduction caused by mixtures shows a positive deviation from the linearly additive straight line. This effect is more prominent when the drag reduction caused by both the constituents differ appreciably. In most of the cases, the drag reduction caused by the mixtures is higher than the DR caused by either of the constituent polymers; however, the drag reduction caused by the mixture is less than the sum of the drag reduction caused by both the constituents at their respective concentration in the mixture. It has also been noticed that there is no evidence of synergism in these mixtures at low concentrations.
