Notes: Summary This paper reports the results of the first detailed study of the morphology of exocrine glands in two species of the ant subfamily Leptanillinae. Workers of Leptanilla escheri and L. japonica possess a large, unpaired sternal gland in the VIIth abdominal sternite, and an hypertrophied poison gland which is surrounded by a massive muscle layer. The sternal gland is absent in the queen of L. japonica, and the poison gland is highly degenerated. The queen is, however, endowed with a series of large, paired, intersegmental tergal and sternal glands, which occur between the IVth through the VIIth segments. The queen also posseses large spiracular plate glands.

Notes: Abstract A transmission electron microscope study of intracrystalline boundaries between two perthites of markedly different composition in composite crystals, one a tenary mesoperthite (Or26Ab52An22, initially a homogeneous potassian monalbite) the other a more potassic cryptoperthite (Or61Ab33An6, initially a homogeneous sodian sanidine), shows that the two perthites are in nearly parallel intergrowth. Most boundaries examined were of (hkO) type; (010) boundaries are straight, whereas other (hkO) boundaries are curved or stepped. Exsolution occurred first in the potassian monalbite (mesoperthite) and was unaffected by the boundary. Subsequent exsolution in the sodian sanidine (cryptoperthite) was affected by the boundary, but for up to only a few micrometers. Exsolution occurred by heterogeneous nucleation and growth of oligoclase on and from the intracrystalline boundary. At almost the same time the rest of the volume of sanidine exsolved by spinodal decomposition. 1–2 μm from the boundary in the intervening K-rich matrix of the sodian sanidine, further exsolution occurred by homogeneous nucleation. Time — temperature — transition curves for continuous cooling have been devised to account for the unusual complexity of the exsolution texture. Except in such exceptional circumstances as the example studied, the initial exsolution in high-temperature alkali feldspars of intermediate composition, unlike other minerals, probably does not occur by nucleation, but only by spinodal decomposition.

Notes: Summary The results reported here indicate that selection, as practiced by maize breeders during the development of inbred lines, has markedly reduced the potential morphological variability of Corn Belt germ plasm. It is suggested that a number of traits which appear to a greater degree in “elite” lines than in those resulting from non-selective inbreeding could be the result of selection for genes or chromosomal segments derived from the introgression of maize and teosinte. Yet lines exhibiting maximum teosinte influence would not likely survive the screening imposed by visual selection. Evidence is presented which suggests that visual selection as practiced during inbreeding has little, if any, direct influence on yield in hybrid combinations. With respect to the inheritance of combining ability, results from these experiments support the assumption that high × high general combiners, on the average, tend to be higher yielding than any other set of combinations of high, medium, or low general combiners. It is, however, difficult to account for the relatively high yields of high × low general combiners on the basis of additive gene action alone. It is suggested that in material as heterogeneous as open pollinated Corn Belt varieties, as much genetic diversity can come from within varieties as from between varieties, particularly if the varieties themselves have undergone extensive introgression during the course of their evolution.

Notes: Summary InHolcoponera, thorough revisionary work is rendered difficult by the poor quality of previous descriptions, by the excessive splitting ofSantschi in his revision of 1929, and by the difficulty of seeing all of the types involved. New synonymy is offered where the need is obvious in a few cases.H. striatula var.antillana Santschi proves to be an individual variant ofstriatula and is unworthy of nomenclatorial distinction.H. simplex Emery includes, as individual variants without claim to formal names, the three nominal species or subspecies from Costa Rica (simplex s. str., satzgeri Forel andForeli Santschi). Another synonym,H. spurium Forel, occurs doubtfully in Guatemala. The speciesrelicta Mann is transferred fromRhopalopone to the genusHolcoponera because the new speciesH. mina is intergradient between it and the otherHolcoponera species. Two new species are described:H. mina, from Bolivia and Peru, andH. acuta, from Bolivia.
