Notes: Electron beam techniques have been used to examine the topography and composition of sputter craters formed by an indium primary ion beam from a liquid metal ion source during secondary ion mass spectrometric analysis. Secondary electron images in a scanning electron microscope revealed the crater topography but the presence of implanted In from the primary ion beam could not be detected using an energy dispersive x-ray detector. Auger electron spectroscopy was used to detect the presence of In in the craters, and to establish the qualitative distribution of elements in and around the craters at the surface. Surface contamination of the specimens prevented quantitative interpretation. The total indium concentration distribution across the craters was measured in an electron probe microanalyzer with a crystal spectrometer. The technique can be used to measure total In in the bottom of the crater from which total sputter yield can be obtained.

Notes: [Auszug] CaTiSiO5 glasses were prepared by melting an intimately mixed charge of calcium carbonate, titanium dioxide and silica at 1,450 C for 1 h, followed by casting 1-cm diameter cylinders in stainless steel moulds. The tendency of the glass to crystallize or phase separate was avoided by keeping the ...

Notes: Abstract It is shown that the global charges of a gauge theory may yield a nontrivial central extension of the asymptotic symmetry algebra already at the classical level. This is done by studying three dimensional gravity with a negative cosmological constant. The asymptotic symmetry group in that case is eitherR×SO(2) or the pseudo-conformal group in two dimensions, depending on the boundary conditions adopted at spatial infinity. In the latter situation, a nontrivial central charge appears in the algebra of the canonical generators, which turns out to be just the Virasoro central charge.

Notes: Abstract This paper examines the level and seasonal incidence of parasitism of the redshouldered leaf beetle,Monolepta australis (Jacoby), by the tachinid,Monoleptophaga caldwelli Baranov, and assesses the impact of this fly on the beetle's reproductive development and longevity. Highest average numbers ofM. australis were trapped at light in north Queensland in January and February while parasitism peaked at 6.6 and 6.8% in June and July respectively, averaging 4.8% over the entire sampling period and reaching 28% for a single occasion. Overall, only 2.4% of parasitized beetles were represented in the final two stages of ovarian development compared to 29.1% of non-parasitized ones. There was a highly significant (P〈0.001) difference in the distribution frequencies of parasitized and non-parasitized females in the various stages of ovarian development, and most parasitized males possessed atrophied testes. For field-collected beetles maintained in the laboratory, average longevity for those parasitized was 15.6 days compared to 72.2 days for those not parasitized.

Notes: Abstract SIMS was used to locate O18 in a thick oxide scale grown on a cobalt specimen oxidized first in O16 and subsequently in O18. Analyses were performed in depth profile from the oxide-gas interface and in step scan across a polished cross section. SIMS was found to be well suited to this type of oxygen tracer study. Eighty percent of the O18 was located in the inner quarter of the scale with a maximum value of 70% 10–15 μ from the metal-oxide interface. The distribution of the remaining O18 was essentially uniform in the outer 3/4 of the scale at an average value of 4.6%. There was, however, a layer 150 nm thick highly enriched in O18 at the oxide-gas interface. The O18 in the outer 3/4 of the porous scale is probably the result of normal exchange processes. The form of the distribution near the metal-oxide interface cannot be explained at this time.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Wir untersuchten das Diffusionsverhalten von Cäsium und Silber in den technischen Hochtemperatur-Werkstoffen Nimocast 713 LC, Nimonic 86, Inconel 625 und TZM.
Notes: Summary In order to study the diffusion behaviour of caesium and silver in the technical high-temperature alloys Nimocast 713 LC, Nimonic 86, Inconel 625 and TZM, corresponding samples with polished surfaces were vacuum annealed between 700 and 1050° C for times between 170 and 5500 hr at Cs and Ag partial pressures of 10−6 mm Hg respectively. Post-exposure ion-microprobe mass analysis (IMMA) of a series of such samples, resulted in layer-stripping by sputtering and multielement depth profiles. The data were interpreted quantitatively with a physical model called the local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) model, and in some cases with the aid ofγ-spectroscopy with use of radioactive tracing materials. The results are discussed in terms of a comparison between the two approaches, and the quantitative concentration profiles are being used in a study of the diffusion behaviour in such systems. Good agreement with existing Cs diffusion data in pure nickel or molybdenum has been achieved.
