Notes: To determine the sound velocity in wurtzite AlxGa1−xN, we have used surface acoustic-wave (SAW) delay lines on AlxGa1−xN/c-Al2O3. AlxGa1−xN films with compositions from x=0 to x=1 were grown by plasma-induced molecular beam epitaxy. Starting from published data, we fine tuned the values of the elastic moduli used in numerical calculations such that the simulated and measured dispersion of the SAW were in good agreement. Based on these values, the surface and bulk acoustic-wave velocities of single-crystal AlxGa1−xN were determined as functions of the composition. The resulting SAW velocities ranged from 3700 to 5760 m/s for GaN and AlN, respectively. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Age at sexual maturity and timing of the mating season were determined in male Atlantic walruses (Odobenus rosmarus rosmarus, L.) from the “North Water” subpopulation in northern Baffin Bay. Testes and epididymides of 174 male walruses (between 0 and 30 yr old) from NW Greenland (1987–1990) were studied macroscopically and a subset of 57 specimens was analyzed microscopically. In physically mature bulls (i.e., ≥12 yr old), sperm or apparently ripe spermatids were found between 9 November and 12 July. In younger walruses these signs of fertility were found in a few specimens (7–11 yr old) collected between 9 January and 28 May. The mating season seems to peak in January—April. The youngest sexually mature individual was 7 yr old and the oldest apparently immature individual was 13 yr old. Average age of sexual maturity was 10.9 yr (95% C.I.: 9–6–12.2 yr) and all were sexually mature by the time they were 14 yr old. The non-spermiogenetic testes and epididymides showed accelerated growth between about the 5–6th and about the 12–15th year of life, indicating that sexual maturation occurs during these years. The length of the baculum increased gradually until about 12–15 yr of age, when physical maturity was reached.

Notes: The haul-out activity of 15 ringed seals (Phoca hispida) equipped with satellite-linked radio transmitters was studied in NW Greenland (ca. 73°-78°N). Between 19 June 1997 and 30 June 1999, telemetry data on haulout activity were obtained by the “Land-Sea-Reporter” (LSR), “Time-at-Depth” (TAD), and “Timelines” (TIM) systems housed within the satellite transmitters. The haul-out activity (% of total time hauled out) reported by the TIM system, which is specifically designed for collecting haul-out data, was about 1.4 times higher than that inferred from the LSR, but only about 0.7 of that inferred from TAD data. The TIM were used to describe haul-out activity. A total of 1,011 d with TIM were obtained (64.5% of a total of 1,568 “seal-days” monitored) representing data from nearly an entire annual cycle. No differences were found in percentage of time hauled out per month among various age categories. At all seasons the haul-out time showed considerable individual variation. There were no trends in percentage of time hauled out per month during late summer, fall, and winter (August-February). During the High Arctic winter darkness (November-January) the percentage of haul-out per month ranged between 3.9% in an adult (SD = 2.44, range: 1.1%-5.7%, n= 3 mo) and 15.7% in a subadult (SD = 1.95, range: 13.7%-17.6%, n= 3 mo). From late March there was a significant increase in haul-out time. Between 1 and 30 June, when aerial surveys of basking ringed seals usually are conducted, the haul-out time (% per day) increased from about 25% to about 57%. No tendencies in diel haul-out activity were revealed.

Notes: The occurrence of infections with Trichinella sp. in polar bears (Ursus maritimus) from northeastern Greenland has been studied by examination of muscle samples, mainly diaphragm, from 38 animals shot during the period 1983-1987. Trichinella larvae were demonstrated in 12 bears (32%) with an average of 9.2 larvae/g muscle tissue. No bears younger than three years old were infected. The prevalence of Trichinella among bears of the age group 3-4 years was 25% and 53% among older animals.

Notes: The appearance of disturbing so-called ghost reflections and their shape in X-ray topographs are explained geometrically in real and reciprocal space. It is shown that the introduction of a moving Soller slit placed between single-crystal wafer and film, instead of the conventional secondary slit, overcomes the problem of imaging ghosts in X-ray diffraction topography according to Lang.

Notes: Abstract In view of the scheduled satellite mission EXOSAT (European X-Ray Observatory Satellite) of ESA (European Space Agency) the lunar occultation technique to determine the position of point-like X-ray sources is investigated. In particular, this paper explores the accuracy of the determination of the starting and ending time of an occultation, both of which are directly related to the size of the resulting position error box. An attempt is made to calculate analytically the distribution function of the estimated starting time, and some corresponding numerical evaluations are given. Finally, it is shown by Monte Carlo simulations that a slightly modifiedX 2-minimum method can be used to analyse the X-ray occultation data.

Notes: Abstract In view of the scheduled satellite mission EXOSAT (European X-Ray Observatory Satellite) of ESA (European Space Agency) the lunar occultation technique to determine the position of point-like X-ray sources is investigated. An error analysis for the source coordinates resulting from this technique is presented and an occultation strategy is proposed to achieve optimum lunar occultations. The analysis takes into account the errors of the space coordinates of the satellite and the Moon, the unevenness of the lunar surface, the intensities of source and background, the apparent angular velocity of the Moon as seen from the satellite, the finite sizes of the preoccultation position error boxes of the X-ray sources and the inaccuracies in the satellite orbit correction manoeuvres necessary to achieve the occultations.
