    Notes: By applying projection techniques a unified description of weakly and strongly correlated electronic systems can be given. For that purpose the theory is formulated in Liouville instead of Hilbert space. By introducing an appropriate metric in terms of cumulants it is ensured that all energies are size consistent. An energy expression is derived which is a generalization of Goldstone's linked cluster theorem for arbitrary Hamiltonians. It is suitable for applying the projection method of Zwanzig and Mori. The equations for the correlation energy within the Local Ansatz and within coupled electron pair approximation CEPA-2 follow straightforwardly from the present theory.

    Notes: A Pockels cell with an operating range of 2 to 10 μm has been designed, constructed, and tested for use with the Vanderbilt free electron laser. The Pockels cell can be continuously adjusted to switch out from 80 ns to the full 6 μs duration of the FEL macropulse. The extinction ratio is better than 180:1 and the optical pulse is square with rise and fall times under 10 ns. The high voltage drivers are based on semiconductor switches that are compact and mounted directly to the Pockels cell; this design avoids problems associated with fast, high voltage pulses traveling in cables. In addition, designs for two alternative drivers to generate optical pulses with durations ranging from a few nanoseconds down to the subnanosecond regime are presented here. Prototypes using single high voltage transitions have been constructed and tested electrically.

    Notes: The free-living nematode Panagrellus redivivus was mass produced on a solid culture medium enriched with sunflower oil or fish oil by means of a new technology. Nematodes with different fatty acid compositions were obtained. A 7-day experiment was performed in order to compare the lipid enriched nematodes with Artemia as live food for first feeding common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) larvae. Larvae fed nematodes doubled their body mass and had a mean survival rate higher than 80%. No significant differences could be observed between the two groups fed nematodes. Fish larvae fed with Artemia showed almost no mortality and had a final body mass five times higher than larvae fed nematodes. It is concluded that mass produced nematodes are a promising food source for first feeding common carp larvae. However, further research is needed on the development of improved culture media to increase the nutritional value of P. redivivus.

    Notes: The free-living nematode Panagrellus redivivus is a potential source of live food for first feeding fish. The digestion and assimilation of nematodes by larval fish were investigated with the aid of a histological and stable isotope approach. Larvae of whitefish Coregonus lavaretus were reared for 8 d with nematodes and compared with an unfed control. Nematodes were readily ingested by 3-d-old larvae. Different stages of nematode digestion could be observed in transverse sections of fish larvae sampled on Day 6 at regular intervals after feeding. Nematodes were produced on corn medium. In this way nematodes with a stable carbon isotope signature clearly different from the isotopic pattern of the fish larvae could be obtained. Stable carbon isotope signatures for lipids and lipid-free matter of fish larvae sampled on Days 2 and 8 after first feeding were clearly influenced by the stable isotopic pattern of the nematodes. The high acceptance of the nematodes by Coregonus lavaretus larvae and the early onset of digestion and nutrient retention positively confirm the potential of PanagreUus redivivus as a live food for first feeding fish larvae.

    Description / Table of Contents: Abstract It is shown that the motion of a spinning body with nutation damping due to a series of torque pulses can be completely derived from a regular polygon determined by the ratio of inertias, the integral of one pulse, the momentum and a constantK 0 characterizing damping. The motion is composed of spirals thenth initial radius of which is obtained by connecting the dividing point of the (n−1)th radius with the (n+1)th polygon corner. Each dividing point divides the respective radius in the ratioK 0:1. The net of construction lines converges into an inner polygon turned against the outer one and having the same shape. Simple rules are shown for the application of the scheme on pulse frequencies which are multiples or fractions of spin frequency.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Es wird gezeigt, daß die unter der Einwirkung einer Momentenimpulsserie entstehende Bewegung eines rotierenden Flugkörpers mit Nutationsdämpfung sich vollständig einem regelmäßigen Polygon entnehmen läßt, das durch das Trägheitsmomentenverhältnis, den Integralwert eines Einzelimpulses, den Drall und eine die Dämpfung charakterisierende KonstanteK 0 bestimmt ist. Die Bewegung setzt sich aus logarithmischen Spiralen zusammen, derenn-ten Anfangsradius man erhält, indem man den Teilungspunkt des im VerhältnisK 0:1 geteilten (n−1)-ten Radius mit der (n+1)-ten Polygonecke verbindet. Es wird bewiesen, daß das Konstruktionsnetz zu einem im äußeren Polygon liegenden ähnlichen inneren Polygon konvergiert, das gegenüber ersterem gedreht ist. Einfache Beziehungen zur Bewegungsbestimmung mit dem Polygonschema werden für Pulsfrequenzen angegeben, die ganzzahlige Vielfache oder Bruchteile der Spinfrequenz sind.

    Notes: Abstract A theory is developed for the line width of crystal-field excitations in metallic rare-earth systems were the damping is due to conduction electron-hole excitations. First the single ion or dilute alloy case is studied. As an example the theory is applied to Ce in LaAl2 and compared with recent experiments. Then the case of a regular lattice of rare-earth ions is considered. The theory is applied to theΓ 1 –Γ 4 system. Special attention is paid to the behaviour of the central peak near an induced-moment phase transition. It is shown that the dynamics of the conduction electrons leads to observable effects in the centralpeak intensity and can not be neglected as it is usually done. The theoretical predictions are in agreement with recent experimental findings on Pr3Tl.
