    Description / Table of Contents: Understanding tensile fracture in rocks provides an important key for the interpretation of many problems in structural geology. This book presents a multidisciplinary approach to tensile fracture in rocks (faulting is briefly addressed), starting with an introduction to fracture physics and progressing through tectonofractographic features, characterized both in experimental settings and in geological outcrops. Four examples of sedimentary rocks and two of granites have been chosen to demonstrate the principles and problems in fracture geology. Principles of fracture mechanics and rock mechanics are applied throughout the book, which also explores current understanding about electromagnetic radiation induced by fractures and how such radiation can be used to monitor and predict earthquakes and hazardous collapses in mines.

    Notes: Summary Measurements of fracture joint distribution combined with determinations of plume length and orientation on a vertical section of a single chalk layer near Beer Sheva, Israel, reveal that joints marked by unilateral and circular plumes are skewed towards the shorter sizes while joints decorated by bilateral plumes are skewed towards the longer sizes. The mean lengths of the unilateral and bilateral joints are 66.5 cm and 155.6 cm, with standard deviations of 30 cm and 60.6 cm, respectively. These results as well as joint length observations from other areas seem to suggest a bimodal length distribution. However, since the minor maximum is generally very weak, and due to some additional uncertainties, further confirmation of the present observations is needed.

    Notes: Abstract Though suitable conditions of structural geometry favouring epitaxy were demonstrated, yet it was observed that epitaxy was not a dominant and, possibly, not even an important factor in the nucleation processes studied. Indeed, the mere presence of close structural geometrical fit between the catalyst and the nucleus does not necessarily lead to epitaxy. Other factors such as the concentration of the nucleating agent in the glass and variations in the chemical composition of the glass, and their effects on the nucleation are discussed. Also the effect of the feldspar structure on the kinetic barrier for its nucleation, and several specific liquid phase separation phenomena, are evaluated.

    Notes: Abstract Fields in which metastable crystallisation of feldspars may occur as a result of heterogeneous nucleation were defined at 1000° C for the systems BaO-Al2O3-SiO2, SrO-Al2O3-SiO2, and CaO-Al2O3-SiO2. The metastable fields of the above barium and calcium systems differ considerably from the respective primary liquidus fields of celsian and anorthite with the tendency for the stoichiometric compositions to be situated at the centre of the metastable region. Various physical and dielectric properties of the glasses and glass-ceramics of the three systems are presented and compared. High linear thermal expansion, high electrical resistivity, and low loss tangent and dielectric constant characterise these glass-ceramics. One of them (No. 2, table I) has, in addition, high heat resistance and translucency at high temperatures.

    Notes: Abstract Various metastable crystalline forms of alkaline earth feldspars were produced by the method of catalysed crystallisation of glass. Results obtained by differential thermal analysis and thermal expansion measurements suggest the existence of low-high displacive transformations in SrAl2Si2O8 and CaAl2Si2O8. The former is rapid and analogous to the one known in BaAl2Si2O8 and the latter is rather sluggish.

    Notes: Abstract The hexacelsian-celsian transformation from grains of 1/4 in. (0.635 cm) size is slow and erratic. This is because the rate of heterogeneous nucleation in such grains is low and is influenced by contamination present in the furnace. When the grain size is reduced to a −200 mesh powder, heterogeneous nucleation becomes a dominant factor and the transformation is accelerated. The transformation has three stages: the first is controlled by the rate of crystal growth, the second is controlled by the rates of nucleation and crystal growth, and the third is controlled by the rate of nucleation. The activation energy of crystal growth in the first stage of transformation is 20.1 kcal mole−1 ±20%. This suggests that the hexacelsian-celsian transformation does not involve Si-0 and Al-O bond openings, since this would be expected to involve an activation energy of at least 60 kcal mole−1.

    Notes: Abstract The displacive transformations in quartz, hexacelsian and the strontium equivalent of the latter, are homogeneous incipient transformations. These transformations are carried out mostly as a second (or higher) order reaction, and are finally completed abruptly as a first-order reaction which results from a sudden release of strain accumulated due to bond stretching. In such transformations the first-order mode of reaction seems to be eliminated to various extents by the introduction of impurities as solid solution to the structure. Such impurities promote heterogeneous transformations. The extent of sluggishness of displacive transformations and of stability relationship in alkaline earth feldspars is correlated with the various ionic sizes of barium, strontium and calcium. Displacive and diffusive transformations in alkali feldspars are also homogeneous incipient transformations, but due to the high mobility of the alkali ions, building up of strain is prevented and no abrupt change in symmetry occurs at the transformation. The hexacelsian ⇌ celsian and monotropic transformations in SrAl2Si2O8 and CaAl2Si2O8 are heterogeneous incipient reconstructive transformations. Differences in melting temperatures reported in the past for BaAl2Si2O8 may probably be correlated with the grain size, crystalline modification and extent of Al/Si order in the sample investigated.
