    Description / Table of Contents: Plate tectonics has significantly broadened our view of the dynamics of continental evolution, involving both the processes currently active at the surface and those extending deep into the interior of the Earth. Seismic anisotropy provides some of the most diagnostic evidence for mapping past and present deformation of the entire crustmantle system. This volume contains papers presented originally at an international workshop at the Chateau of Trest in the Czech Republic in 1996. This workshop brought together geophysicists and geologists who work in the field of observational and theoretical seismology, mineral and rock physics, gravity studies and geodynamic modelling. Topics include large-scale anisotropy of the Earth's mantle, mantle heterogeneity vs. anisotropy 3-D velocity and density structures and inferences on mantle dynamics, mineral and rock physics studies, and mathematical aspects of complex wave propagation.

    Notes: Joint analysis of shear-wave splitting parameters and directional dependence of teleseismic P residuals based on data from the seismic experiment TOR across the Trans-European Suture Zone suggest that the Sorgenfrei–Tornquist Zone (STZ) in northern Denmark forms the south-western margin of Baltica in the upper mantle. Different lithosphere thickness and different orientation of seismic anisotropy in the mantle lithosphere identify three domains separated by the STZ between Denmark and southern Sweden and the Thor Suture between northern Germany and Denmark. We suggest that the anisotropy reflects frozen-in olivine fabrics, most probably created during early stages of the evolution of the European continent. The middle Danish block might represent a microplate caught in between Avalonia and Baltica before the Caledonian orogeny.

    Notes: Summary The coefficient of the gamma-ray absorption μ Cs 137 investigated in eclogites of the Bohemian Massif varies with fresh samples from0.2477 cm −1 to 0.2804 cm −1 . Symplectite is the main factor decreasing the value of μ down to0.242 cm −1 . On the contrary, the coefficient μ increases with the increasing content of clinopyroxene and especially of garnet. The linear dependence of the coefficient μ on the density ϕ may be expressed by the equation μ=0.0682ϕ+0.028.

    Notes: Summary The mean compressional wave velocities in unsaturated and water saturated granodiorite specimens are higher by 18 and 33 per cent, respectively, than the mean velocity determined by piezo-electric field measurements in the uppermost zone of a granodiorite massif. After the saturation the velocity of the ultrasonic waves in the granodiorite specimens increased by 12 per cent and the velocity anisotropy decreased from 8 to 5 per cent on the average.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary Teleseismic P residuals calculated for waves arriving from various azimuths and angles of incidence, and a 3-D inversion of the residuals provided the basis for characterizing the uppermost mantle structure beneath Bulgaria. The Moesian Platform and the Rhodopean Massif are two different blocks characterized by a lithosphere thickness of about 130–140 km with a zone of lithosphere thinning along their contact. Both units have opposite patterns of the directional dependence of relatively high and low P velocities. This directional dependence is interpreted by dipping anisotropic structures in the subcrustal lithosphere, which probably represent remnants of paleosubductions of an old oceanic lithosphere.
