    Notes: Abstract. The effect of sub-lethal concentrations of copper upon tolerant and non-tolerant strains of Chlorella vulgaris was investigated. Copper concentrations of 0.2 and 0.4 mg dm−3 increased the lag phase of both strains, the effect being greater in the non-tolerant strain. No difference was observed in the toxicity of copper to the photosynthetic rates of the isolated chloroplasts of either strain. However, significant differences were shown at the whole cell level.Lower copper uptake was shown by the tolerant cells. In both strains initial uptake of copper was followed by a phase of desorption before cell division occurred. In cultures of both strains the concentration of ionic copper was decreased by complexation with extracellular organic material. Over a 14 day growth period more organic material was produced by the tolerant cells. The organic material produced by the tolerant cell formed organo-copper complexes which had a higher conditional stability constant.It is proposed that the cell wall acts as a barrier to copper in the tolerant cells and prevents copper from affecting cell metabolism. Organo-copper complexation occurs at this barrier and this complex is then released into the medium.

    Notes: The Mono estuary is an infilled, microtidal estuary located on the wave-dominated Bight of Benin coast which is subject to very strong eastward longshore drift. The estuarine fill comprises a thick unit of lagoonal mud deposited in a ‘central basin’between upland fluvial deposits and estuary-mouth wave-tide deposits. This lagoonal fill is capped by organic-rich tidal flat mud. In addition to tidal flat mud, the superficial facies overlying the ‘central basin’fill include remnants of spits resting on transgressive/washover sand, an estuary-mouth association of beach, shoreface, flood-tidal delta and tidal inlet deposits, and a thin sheet of fluvial sediments deposited over tidal flat mud.After an initial phase of spit intrusion over the infilled central basin east of the present Mono channel, the whole estuary mouth became bounded by a regressive barrier formed from sand supplied by the Volta Delta during the middle Holocene eustatic highstand. Barrier progradation ceased late in the Holocene following the establishment of an equilibrium plan-form shoreline alignment that allowed through-drift of Volta sand to sediment sinks further downdrift. Over the same period, accretion, from fluvially supplied sediments, of the estuarine plain close to the limit of spring high tides, or, over much of the lower valley, into a fluvial plain no longer subject to tidal flooding, induced marked meandering of the Mono and its tidal distributaries in response to confinement of much of the tidal prism to these channels. The process resulted in erosion of spit/washover and regressive barrier sand, and in reworking of the tidal flat and floodbasin deposits. The strong longshore drift, equilibrium shoreline alignment and the year-round persistence of a tidal inlet maintained by discharge from the Mono and from Lake Ahémé have resulted in a stationary barrier that is reworked by a mobile inlet.The Mono example shows that advanced estuarine infill may result in considerable facies reworking, obliteration of certain facies and marked spatial imbrication of fluvial, estuarine and wave-tide-deposited facies, and confirms patterns of sedimentary change described for microtidal estuaries on wave-influenced coasts. In addition, this study shows that local environmental factors such as sediment supply relative to limited accommodation space, and strong longshore drift, which may preclude accumulation of sediments in the vicinity of the estuary mouth, may lead to infilled equilibrium or near-equilibrium estuaries that will not necessarily evolve into deltas.

    Description: Sediments from Lake Petit (2200 m a.s.l., Southern Alps) are particularly relevant for analysis of coupled landscape palaeoecology and palaeolimnology. Diatom assemblages, organic matter composition of sediments (total nitrogen and organic carbon) and Pediastrum boryanum concentrations were obtained from a 144-cm-long core, enabling the reconstruction of the aquatic ecosystem over nearly the last 5000 cal. BP. From 4800 to 4300 cal. BP, Lake Petit was a stable diatom-productive water body dominated by alkaliphilous diatoms ( Staurosirella pinnata ). During this period, nutrients and cations were supplied by the chemical weathering of podzols that developed under conifer woodlands. This overall stability was suddenly interrupted at 4200 cal. BP by a major detrital pulse that was probably climate linked (4200 cal. BP event) and that triggered a drop in diatom productivity and diversity. From 4100 to 2400 cal. BP, diatom productivity progressively decreased, whereas Pediastrum developed. Diatom assemblages were more diversified (predominance of Pseudostaurosira robusta, P. brevistriata and P. pseudoconstruens ) and reflected a regime of continuous erosion, whereas slopes were colonised by grazed grasslands. Finally, from 2400 cal. BP to the present day, diatom assemblages reveal a slight acidification and nutrient enrichment of waters concomitant with increasing human pressure in the catchment. These results demonstrate the close links between ecosystems and the ready propagation of disturbances throughout watersheds that might lead to abrupt regime shifts in such alpine environments.

    Description: Eight mechanical cores, 50 auger holes, 145 borehole logs, and 19 radiocarbon ages are used to identify the sedimentary facies and patterns of mid- to late-Holocene development of the French North Sea coastal plain near the Belgian border. Stratigraphic sections show a shallow Pleistocene basement that deepens towards the North Sea, overlain by up to 11 m of deposits comprising basal peat representative of freshwater marsh development, covered inland by essentially muddy tidal sediments, and by sandy tidal deposits near the present North Sea. The peat is conspicuously absent in a well-defined circular depression, ‘Les Moëres’, lying astride the border. A widespread layer of sandy silt up to 3 m thick, absent in Les Moëres, and commonly overlying peat elsewhere, generally forms the topmost stratigraphic unit in inland areas, while near the North Sea, a well-defined inland aeolian sand unit, the Ghyvelde dune, overlies tidal flat sediments. The radiocarbon ages, ranging from 5651 cal. BP to 1070 cal. BP ( c . 4908 ± 52 yr BP to 1270 ± 48 yr BP), date the final 2—3 m of infill. The very slow sedimentation corresponding to this upper part of the overall infill appears to reflect a lower sediment accommodation space and very slow regional sea-level rise. The superposition of a layer of sandy silt over peat over much of the inner part of the plain highlights a dramatic change, probably associated with the tidal prism and tidal channel dynamics, from widespread freshwater marshes to renewed tidal sedimentation, as new sediment accommodation space was created through peat drainage and compaction. Further seaward, dominantly sand-flat sedimentation persisted throughout the Holocene, such sand flats forming the foundation for the Ghyvelde aeolian dune. This dune probably accumulated largely after c . 3500 yr BP, following the welding onto this sand-flat shore of one or more large nearshore sand banks that are the primary source of dune accretion on this southern North Sea coast. In this area, the persistence of the tidal Les Moëres depression may reflect a propensity for weaker sand supply from the sea to a coastal embayment that was being increasingly sheltered by such dune development, accompanied by increasingly underfit tidal inlets. These inlets were finally sealed off completely by the accretion of the modern aeolian dune barrier which also led to the isolation inland, within the tidal plain, of the Ghyvelde dune.

    Description: A 144-cm-long core was obtained in Lake Petit (2200 m a.s.l., Mediterranean French Alps) in order to reconstruct past interactions between humans, the environment and the climate over the last five millennia using a multidisciplinary approach involving sedimentological, geochemical and botanical analyses. We show a complex pattern of environmental transformation. From 4800 to 4200 cal. BP, podzol-type soils progressively developed under forest cover. This stable situation was interrupted by a major detrital pulse at 4200 cal. BP that we consider as a tipping point in the environmental history. At this point, pedogenetic processes drastically regressed, leading to the development of moderately weathered soils. More frequent detrital inputs are recorded since 3000 cal. BP ( ad 1050) as the human impact significantly increased in the catchment area. We conclude that destabilisation of the environment was triggered by climate and exacerbated by human activities to a stage beyond resilience.

    Description: Understanding the role of climate and humans in generating mountain slope instability is crucial because such instability influences downstream fluvial activity and is a major threat to societies. Here, we use the sedimentary archive of Lake Allos (southeastern France), a mountain lake in the European Alps, to characterize mountain flood deposits and vegetation dynamics over the past 7000 yr. Our results support the interpretation of a critical threshold in catchment sensitivity to erosion at 1700 calibrated (cal.) yr B.P. (A.D. 250) probably resulting from long-term, uninterrupted impacts of human activity. The frequency and severity of floods increased dramatically after this date. These results demonstrate that underestimation of human impacts over the Holocene may pose a challenge to a clear understanding of past climate changes because paleoflood records are highly likely to have been affected by geomorphic thresholds. Natural reforestation since the end of the 19 th century does not appear to be sufficient to induce a flood regime comparable to that which occurred prior to 1700 cal. yr B.P. This poses the question as to whether forest restoration in high-altitude environments is liable to foster a return to a low-erosion regime over the next decades, or whether the overall severity of soil degradation has been such as to preclude a return to previous conditions.

    Description: The overarching morphosedimentary control on the coast of South America between the Amazon and Orinoco rivers is the massive muddy discharge of the Amazon (from c. 754 x 10 6 to 1000 x 10 6 t a –1 ). This mud supply by the world’s largest river reflects sediment sourcing from the Andes, weathering in a tropical–equatorial climate and the extremely high water discharge ( ca 173 000 m 3 s –1 ). Amazon mud forms an estuarine mega-turbidity maximum on the shelf that feeds the growth of a subaqueous delta. About 15–20% of this mud forms coastal banks that migrate towards the mouth of the Orinoco, which has constructed a large subaerial delta. This muddy coast exhibits interspersed beaches and cheniers constructed from sand supplied by the smaller rivers and by the Orinoco, and is characterized by extremely large spatio-temporal geomorphic variability resulting from intense wave-reworking of the migrating banks, mangrove colonization and destruction, and erosion in interbank areas. These dynamic processes also drive important biogeochemical recycling, enhancing coastal productivity while efficiently remineralizing organic matter and promoting authigenic mineral formation. This muddy coast is being impacted by human-induced changes, in Guyana in particular. The Amazon–Orinoco coast provides an analogue for muddy, wave-dominated shorefaces in the geological record.
