Is it possible to have mathematics experience in the school courtyard garden? Can we observe plants "with different eyes" and identify the connections between mathematical sciences and plant biology? This booklet contains and comments on three interdisciplinary activities that secondary school mathematics and science teachers can conduct in their classrooms, using the group laboratory work method. The proposed activities concern two apparently distant fields: geometry and botany, and are linked to the laboratory kit "Symmetry: mathematics in the garden" (http://specchi.mat.unimi.it/matematica/matematica_in_giardino.html). This work intends to provide teachers, and not only them, with an unusual classification tool based on symmetry and also with a look at topics that are little known to most people and not usually covered in the school curricula, such as floral diagrams and phyllotaxis.

È pensabile fare esperienza di matematica nel cortile-giardino della scuola? Possiamo osservare le piante “con altri occhi” ed arrivare a individuare i collegamenti tra le scienze matematiche e la biologia vegetale? Questo libretto contiene e commenta tre attività interdisciplinari che i docenti di matematica e scienze della scuola secondaria di primo grado possono condurre in classe, utilizzando il metodo di lavoro del laboratorio a gruppi. Le attività proposte riguardano due campi apparentemente distanti: la geometria e la botanica, e sono legate al kit di laboratorio “Simmetria: matematica in giardino” (http://specchi.mat.unimi.it/matematica/matematica_in_giardino.html). Con questo manuale si intende fornire agli insegnanti, e non solo a loro, uno strumento di classificazione inusuale basato sulla simmetria e anche uno sguardo ad argomenti poco conosciuti ai più e non abitualmente trattati nel ciclo scolastico come i diagrammi fiorali e la fillotassi.
