Description / Table of Contents: The book contains methodical overview of the main groups of biological indicators used in palaeoecology: pollen, diatoms, chironomids larvae, cladocera, ostracods, sponges, some other less widely used groups of invertebrates and a review on application of pedohumic method for palaeoecological reconstructions. Articles contain information on systematics, morphology, biology of the selected proxy groups and the modern approaches to palaeoclimatic reconstructions. Applicability of the biological indicators is illustrated by case studies from different regions: steppe Altay and Altay mountains, central and northern Yakutia, Northern Ural, west Siberia, lake Baikal, Tien Shan mountains, Middle Volga, etc. The book can be interesting for specialists in palaeoecology and students.
Description / Table of Contents:

Notes: Backreflection of short, intense laser pulses at oblique incidence on solid targets is explained with a model where a periodic electron density modulation acts as a diffraction grating. The pump and reflected electromagnetic waves drive through the ponderomotive force the grating, and the coupled system becomes parametrically unstable. The basic equations governing this situation are given. A linearized stability analysis is used to obtain the instability growth rate in a homogeneous plasma and the convective gain coefficients for the inhomogeneous case. The results support the feasibility of the suggested mechanism. An absolute instability is predicted to set on at a threshold intensity of about 1016 W/cm2 for a typical laser pulse with a length of 100 fs and a spot size of 30 μm. The instability is shown to saturate at a level of a few percent, because the higher harmonics in the electron density modulation make the diffraction more diffuse, thus reducing both the ponderomotive force and the backreflection coefficient. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The propagation of self-localizing beams of electromagnetic waves in the form of nonlinear waveguides in a slightly inhomogeneous medium is studied analytically and numerically. The trajectories of the axial ray are studied as a function of its direction and the field strength at the initial point on the basis of a nonlinear scalar Helmholtz equation. Analytic expressions are derived. The longitudinal refractive index, the field intensity, and the waveguide radius are plotted as functions of the instantaneous position of the point on the axial ray. Deep penetration of the beam into the opaque region and the position of the screening surface are studied as functions of the parameters of the beam and the medium. A steady-state 3D problem is analyzed for a power-law nonlinearity with an arbitrary power. A 2D problem is analyzed for the case of a ponderomotive nonlinearity with saturation.

Notes: Abstract Erbium-doped a-Si:H films are prepared by magnetron sputtering of a Si-Er target at a deposition temperature of 200 °C. The films are then subjected to cumulative thermal annealing. A sharp increase (∼50-fold) in the photoluminescence intensity at a wavelength of 1.54 µm is observed after a 15-min anneal at 300 °C in a nitrogen atmosphere. At an anneal temperature ⩾500 °C the photoluminescence signal decreases essentially to zero. The influence of thermal annealing processes is discussed in the context of the model of partial transformation of the structural network of amorphous a-Si(Er):H films.

Notes: Abstract The possibility that fast electrons can escape in a direction close to the trajectory of a reflected ultrashort laser pulse at extremely high laser radiation fluxes is examined analytically and numerically. Analytic estimates are made of the feasibility of forming electron bursts in the plasma and of their subsequent motion. The self-consistent, collisionless motion of a plasma acted on by specified incident and reflected ultrashort laser pulses is modeled in two dimensions by the particle-in-cell method. It is shown that a substantial number of electrons located in the subcritical region are gathered into bunches by the resultant forces and escape to the vacuum in a direction different from the normal to the target surface within a narrow range of solid angles. This demonstrates the feasibility of laser acceleration of an electron burst during reflection of an ultrashort laser pulse from a solid target.

Notes: Abstract A multicomponent Stark structure corresponding to a 4I 13/2→4I 15/2 transition in the 4f 11 shell of Er3+ ions is observed in hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) subjected to low-temperature (150 °C) anneal. The observation of narrow, strong components indicates that the erbium ions form a highly ordered local surrounding (Er-O-Si nanoclusters) in the labile, disordered structural network of a-Si:H.
