    Notes: We present a comparative study on the ultrafast nonlinear optical response of a novel conjugated zinc porphyrin system. The linear optical absorption spectra of these molecules all show the Q-band and B-band transitions of the basic porphyrin unit. We have taken spectrally resolved ultrafast pump–probe measurements on monomer, dimer, and polymer solutions, which allows us to compare their excited state dynamics and relate these to their linear optical absorption. The spectra show several common features, but these features have markedly different decay dynamics. The bleaching is preferential in the Q band for the polymer and the B band for the monomer. The polymer Q-band bleaching shows a two-component decay, of approximately 700 fs and 170±50 ps time constants in a biexponential fit, which we attribute to both exciton–exciton annihilation and exciton diffusion to recombination centers on the polymer chain. The Q band of the dimer also has a two-component decay with 13±5 and 1250±70 ps time constants which we attribute to rotational diffusion of the excited molecule in solution, and decay to the ground state, respectively. The B-band bleaching in the monomer is long lived and has a decay constant of approximately 3.5±0.5 ns; from the absorption recovery of the B band we estimate a triplet yield of 0.8. All molecules exhibit broad π*−π* absorptions in the visible spectral region (between the Q band and the B band). In particular, we show that the monomer has potential as a broadband optical limiter in the visible region from 455 (2.72 eV) to 620 nm (2.00 eV); we estimate that its excited state absorption cross section is 8.5 times that of its ground state cross section at 532 nm (2.33 eV). There is also clear evidence of triplet transitions in the dimer and monomer; the triplet absorption feature ranging from 940 (1.32 eV) to 1000 nm (1.24 eV) rises 10 ps after excitation in the dimer which suggests a short intersystem-crossing time. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A "reference cell'' for generating radio-frequency (rf) glow discharges in gases at a frequency of 13.56 MHz is described. The reference cell provides an experimental platform for comparing plasma measurements carried out in a common reactor geometry by different experimental groups, thereby enhancing the transfer of knowledge and insight gained in rf discharge studies. The results of performing ostensibly identical measurements on six of these cells in five different laboratories are analyzed and discussed. Measurements were made of plasma voltage and current characteristics for discharges in pure argon at specified values of applied voltages, gas pressures, and gas flow rates. Data are presented on relevant electrical quantities derived from Fourier analysis of the voltage and current wave forms. Amplitudes, phase shifts, self-bias voltages, and power dissipation were measured. Each of the cells was characterized in terms of its measured internal reactive components. Comparing results from different cells provides an indication of the degree of precision needed to define the electrical configuration and operating parameters in order to achieve identical performance at various laboratories. The results show, for example, that the external circuit, including the reactive components of the rf power source, can significantly influence the discharge. Results obtained in reference cells with identical rf power sources demonstrate that considerable progress has been made in developing a phenomenological understanding of the conditions needed to obtain reproducible discharge conditions in independent reference cells.

    Notes: The structural characteristics of Sr1−x Lax TiO3+δ (0≤x≤0.4) at 1400 °C have been investigated as a function of ambient oxygen partial pressure. A modified Rietveld pattern-fitting structure-refinement program [H. M. Rietveld, J. Appl. Crystallogr. 2, 65 (1969)] was used to determine the nature of the distortions of the fundamental perovskite unit cell, the degree of lattice perfection, and the cation vacancy concentrations. Specimens equilibrated in forming gas displayed a linear relation between x, the lattice parameters, and the degree of lattice perfection while those samples annealed in air and oxygen deviated significantly from linearity. A monoclinic distortion of the perovskite structure was seen in the samples at low oxygen partial pressures while a second phase or layer type of distortion appeared in samples with x〉0.2 under oxidizing conditions.

    Notes: Optical absorption of nanocrystalline thin films can be influenced by the presence of both porosity and grain size effects. If both are present simultaneously, their effects are difficult to separate. In this study it is shown that the combination of uv-vis transmittance and reflectance measurements on porous CeO2 films provides enough data to make this separation. The CeO2 films were prepared by deposition of nanosized (∼5 nm) particles from a water colloidal suspension onto sapphire and subjecting these films to sintering temperatures sufficiently high to provide a series of films with a typical thickness of 0.6 μm with a wide range of grain sizes and porosity. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, ellipsometry, and profilometry were used to characterize the films and to compare the observed grain sizes and porosity with that obtained from optical measurements. All of the techniques used gave results on porosity and grain size which were in good agreement, from 15% to 50% and 5 to 65 nm, respectively. For these porous films it was found that the changes in absorption which are normally explained by quantum confinement effects due to the small crystallite size can be attributed primarily to changes in porosity rather than in grain size. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
