Notes: Chromium doped fluorochloro- and fluorobromozirconate glasses have been prepared following and modifying standard methods. Electron probe microanalysis has been carried out to obtain the actual chlorine and bromine content of the samples. Optical absorption, steady-state excitation and emission, luminescence decay, and time-resolved spectroscopy measurements have been performed in order to study the Cr3+ neighborhood and its optical properties. The results have been interpreted in terms of the progressive substitution of the fluorine ions in the first coordination shell of Cr3+ by chlorine or bromine ions when their concentration increases in the glasses. From the analysis of the Fano antiresonances of the 4A2g(F)→2Eg(G), 2T1g(G) intraconfigurational transitions, up to five Cr3+ environments have been identified and assigned to: 6 F−, 5 F− and 1 Cl− or 1 Br−, 3 F− and 3 Cl− or 3 Br−, 1 F− and 5 Cl− or 5 Br− and 6 Cl− or 6 Br−. It is deduced that less than 10% of fluorine ions substitution is enough to have all the Cr3+ ions hexacoordinated to chlorine or bromine ions. Values for the crystal field and Racah parameters, the Stokes shift, and the Huang–Rhys factor have been estimated from the absorption and luminescence data. The luminescence decay and time-resolved measurements of the 4T2g(F) level of Cr3+ have been explained by the presence of two opposite mechanisms: nonradiative transitions and energy transfer processes which predominate, respectively, in fluorozirconate and in the most substituted glasses. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Polarized photoluminescence as well as birefringence measurements have been performed in different films of side-chain liquid crystal polyacrylates prepared by in situ photopolymerization. The polymeric systems contain a cyanoterphenyl chromophore covalently bound as a side group. The stability of the luminescence has been studied as a function of the composition and crosslinking of the polymer films. Although both the thermal quenching and the optical bleaching of the luminescence depend on the composition of the polymer matrix they seem to be independent of the crosslinking degree. Polymer films showing a stable luminescence with a high dichroic ratio have been obtained in copolymers combining mono and diacrylates having the same mesogenic core, with a low content (10%) of the diacrylate (crosslinking agent). © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Biphotonic holographic recording has been performed on thin films of a side-chain liquid crystalline p-cyanoazobenzene polymethacrylate. Polarization and intensity holographic gratings have been recorded by irradiation of the films with blue incoherent light and simultaneous or subsequent illumination with the red light pattern generated by the interference of two properly polarized beams from a He–Ne laser. The influence of temperature and illumination conditions on the diffraction efficiency of those gratings has been studied. Surface topography of the films has been explored using a profilometer. The appearance of relief gratings using biphotonic processes has been observed only in gratings recorded with simultaneous illumination of blue light and an intensity modulated light pattern of the red light. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Oriented liquid crystal polymer films with different degrees of cross-linking have been obtained by "in situ" photopolymerization of different mesogenic samples at various temperatures. These samples are mixtures of a naphthalene based monoacrylate and a crosslinking agent (diacrylate). Photoluminescence has been obtained by adding a cyanoterphenyl chromophore. The order parameters of the polymer films have been derived from dichroic measurements. An increase of the dichroism has been found when the diacrylate content and/or the polymerization temperature decrease. The dichroism is also bigger if the chromophore is in a "guest-host" configuration than if it is covalently attached to the polymer backbone. The dichroic ratios do not change under annealing up to 200 °C but some photodegradation of the luminescence is observed in the naphthalene containing films. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The optical properties of Ni2+ doped Rb1−xCsxCaF3 and RbCa1−xCdxF3 solid solutions were studied. The 1T2g(1D)→3A2g(3F) and 1T2g(1D)→3T2g(3F) emission bands and the lifetime of the 1T2g level were measured as a function of the crystal composition. Both the band positions and the lifetime show a monotonic change with x between the values corresponding to the pure crystals. In Rb1−xCsxCaF3 crystals the contributions of different Ni2+ centers in the emission bands were resolved. The shift of emissions is due to the Rb+–Cs+ substitution as next nearest neighbors of Ni2+ ions as well as to a change of the lattice parameter with the composition of solid solutions. Both contributions were separated for some of the Ni2+ centers. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: High diffraction efficiencies have been achieved with polarization gratings recorded in thin films of an azobenzene side-chain liquid crystalline polyester by means of biphotonic processes. Efficiency values up to 30% have been reached after an induction period of 300 s and subsequent evolution with the sample in darkness. These values are at least two orders of magnitude higher than those previously reported for biphotonic recording. The gratings can be erased with unpolarized blue light and partial recovery of the diffraction efficiency has been observed after the erasure process when the sample is kept in darkness. Red light illumination of the erased film increases the recovered efficiency value and the recovery rate. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Biphotonic holographic gratings have been recorded in a side-chain azobenzene liquid crystalline polyester using a blue incoherent source and a He–Ne laser. Intensity gratings and the appearance of surface relief have been observed when two linearly polarized beams from a He–Ne laser are made to interfere on a film illuminated with blue light. Polarized holographic gratings are also created with two orthogonally circularly polarized He–Ne beams. All these gratings are stable in darkness but can be erased with blue light. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
