The Behavior of Thinnest Oxide Layers on MetalsThere is a report on investigations of the thin and invisible layers on metal surfaces. The results allow to discern their influence on the kinetics of surface reactions and corrosion processes.By means of two new methods - the measurement of the ellipticity of reflected, polarised light and the measurement of the emission of exoelectrons - we found that there is under normal conditions a thin adsorbtion layer which influences the kinetic of passivation. The emessive power, the conductivity and the diffusion behavior of the thin oxide layers are further important facts of the control of the degree of activity or passivity of metal surfaces in corrosion reactions. The higher the activity of the surface the more electrons are emitted under certain conditions. On this basis the temporary degree of activity and its dependance of time, temperature, exposion to light and so on could be determined. As the emission spectra of naturally or by heat produced layers of the different metals (Al, Sn, Cu, Cr, Ni, Zn) are differing the emission is regarded as a total of the whole corrosion system.
Notes:
