Abstract: This informative book compiles the most up-to-date applications of nanobiosensors in fields ranging from agriculture to medicine. The introductory section describes different types of nanobiosensors and use of nanobiosensors towards a sustainable environment. The applications are divided into four broad sections for easy reading and understanding. The book discusses how manipulation, control and integration of atoms and molecules are used to form materials, structures, devices and systems in nano-scale. Chapters in the book shed light on the use of nanosensors in diagnostics and medical devices. Application in food processing as well as in cell signaling is also described. Nanobiosensors have immense use, and this book captures the most important ones.

Notes: In the present investigation, we examined the effect of sulphur fertilization on photosynthesis (Pn) and its related physiological variables in the leaves of field grown Brassica genotypes (Brassica juncea [L.] Czern. and Coss. cv. Pusa Jai Kisan and Brassica campestris L. cv. Pusa Gold) over a whole growing season. Sulphur fertilization significantly (P〈0.05) increased the Pn rate on leaf area basis at all the growth stages over −S treatment. The photosynthesis related variables such as soluble protein and Rubisco (ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase) protein were significantly higher in the leaves of plants grown with +S treatment, when compared to −S treatment. Sulphur fertilization also improved the chlorophyll, N and S content in the leaves of +S treated plants over −S treatment. Leaf-S content was linearly correlated with Pn rate, N-content and Rubisco protein in the leaves of both genotypes. An interesting relationship between N-content and Pn rate in the leaves of −S and +S treated plants was observed. In −S plants, the relationship between Pn rate and N-content per unit area of fully matured leaves became non-linear when leaf-N exceeded 1.5 g m−2, while in +S plants the same remained linear. Rubisco protein was linearly related to Pn rate and leaf-N content. The ratio of Rubisco/soluble protein was lesser in the leaves of −S treated plants than +S treated plants. The effect of sulphur fertilization on Pn is discussed in relation to improved nitrogen utilization efficiency of the plants that leads to incorporation of reduced-N into the protein, especially in Rubisco protein rather than the non-protein compounds.

Notes: Abstract Making use of currently available theory of wave absorption, an attempt has been made to estimate the refractive indices and absorption coefficients for different wave frequencies during day and night times in the Jovian ionosphere. The results obtained have striking similarity with the corresponding results in the case of the Earth's ionosphere. It is concluded that VLF signals can be observed more easily during night times.

Notes: Abstract A dispersion relation for left hand circularly polarized electromagnetic wave propagation in an anisotropic magnetoplasma in the presence of a very weak parallel electrostatic field has been derived with the help of linearized Vlasov and Maxwell equations. An expression of the growth rate has been derived in presence of parallel electric field for ion-cyclotron electromagnetic wave in an anisotropic media. The modification made in the growth rate by introducing parallel electric field and temperature anisotropy has been studied for fully ionized hydrogen plasma with the help of observations made on Jovian ionosphere and magnetosphere atL = 5.6 Rj. It is concluded that the growth (damping) of ion-cyclotron electromagnetic wave is possible when the wave vector is parallel (antiparallel) to the static electric field and effect is more pronounced at higher wave number.

Notes: Abstract This paper presents discrete chorus type emissions observed in January/July, 1970 during the routine recording of whistlers and VLF emissions at our low latitude ground station Gulmarg (geomag. lat., 24°26′N; geomag. long., 147°09′ E). The chorus type emissions are comprised of discrete, sometimes overlapping, tones of one or more spectral shapes (risers, falling tones, hooks, etc.). It is shown that these emissions are generated in the equatorial plane (L∼1.2) by cyclotron resonance between the propagating wave and gyrating electrons.

Notes: Abstract A complete dispersion relation for a whistler mode wave propagation in an anisotropic warm ion-electron magnetoplasma in the presence of parallel electric field using the dispersion relation for a circularly polarized wave has been derived. The dispersion relation includes the effect of anisotropy for the ion and electron velocity distribution functions. The growth rate of electron-ion cyclotron waves for different plasma parameters observed atL = 6.6R E has been computed and the results have been discussed in detail in the light of the observed features of VLF emissions and whistlers. The role of the combination of ion-cyclotron and whistler mode electromagnetic wave propagation along the magnetic field in an anisotropic Maxwellian weakly-ionized magnetoplasma has been studied.

Notes: Abstract The effect of parallel electrostatic field on the amplification of whistler mode waves in an anisotropic bi-Maxwellian weakly ionized plasma for Jovian magnetospheric conditions has been carried out. The growth rate for different Jovian magnetospheric plasma parameters forL = 5.6R j has been computed with the help of general dispersion relation for the whistler mode electromagnetic wave of a drifted bi-Maxwellian distribution function. It is observed that the growth or damping of whistler mode waves in Jovian magnetosphere is possible when the wave vector is parallel or antiparallel to the static magnetic field and the effect of this field is more pronounced at low frequency wave spectrum.

Notes: Abstract In this paper we present the results of observations of the scintillations of radio beacon on 250.351 MHz from geostationary satellite FLEETSAT (73° E) recorded at Bombay on April 9–10, 1992 during night hours. The scintillation index,S 4, is used to describe the strength of the scintillations. The variation of scintillation index with local time shows a maxima of 0.589 at 02:55 IST. This scintillation activity is linked with the spreadF-irregularities. A brief description of the scintillation theories like phase screen theory and theory for weak scintillations - Rytov solution is given. These theories provide an integral measure of the fluctuations in terms of phase and amplitude fluctuations imposed on VHF signals while traversing through the ionosphere. Power spectrum analysis for the log-amplitude and phase departure and cross spectrum between them have also been carried out. Using spectral indexp = 1, we have shown that the scale sizes for the ionospheric irregularities are greater than 1 km.
