Notes: Abstract Measurements of the melting curve of He3 have been made between 16.6° mK and 0.7°K. The liquid and solid molar volumes at melting have been extended from 0.33°K to below 0.03°K, and the molar volume change on melting ΔV m obtained. An increase in ΔV m from 1.20 cm3/mole at 0.33°K to 1.28 cm3/mole at 0.06°K is found, with an extrapolation to 1.27 cm3/mole atT=0. Examination of the thermodynamic consistency of the data indicates that our melting curve slopes are accurate, within experimental error, down to a temperature of 0.04°K. The demagnetization apparatus is described, with considerable attention devoted to thermometry, thermal equilibrium, and experimental techniques. Construction details of the high-sensitivity capacitive strain gauge are given.

Notes: Abstract A calculation of the effect of the conjectured three-body exchange on the possible Néel temperature of solid3He is made. A value of 2.24 mK is obtained fromP v (T) data, whereas susceptibility data indicate 2.9 mK. These calculations indicate that three-body exchange may lead to the occurrence of the transition above 2.0 mK, the previously expected value.

Notes: Abstract Melting pressure measurements have been made on the 3 He-rich phase formed by cooling a solid mixture of 0.6% 3 He in 4 He through phase separation, at pressures between 2.78 and 3.56 MPa. For comparison, simultaneous observations were made with the mixture confined in the pores of a silver sinter and in an open volume connected to the same fill-line. Samples in the sinter cell solidify at higher pressures than the open cell and equilibrate more quickly. Both cells exhibit hysteresis between melting and freezing temperatures, and the transitions are broader in the open-volume cell. Relative to pure 3 He, the melting pressure is elevated by as much as 60 kPa in the sinter cell and 20 kPa in the open cell. The size of the pressure change on melting indicates that a large fraction of the 3 He remains solid at pressures below the melting curve, and this effect is more pronounced in the sinter cell. Measurements are in progress to measure the magnetisation through the magnetic ordering transition.

Notes: Abstract Simultaneous measurements of pressure and magnetic susceptibility have been made in 3 He nano-clusters embedded in a 4 He matrix, following phase separation of the mixture. Susceptibility measurements extend from 0.5 mK to 10 mK for three different samples, which either undergo partial melting upon further cooling, or separate with liquid already present. The magnetic behavior of the clusters indicates solid fractions of 77, 54, and 19%, respectively, for pressures of 3.36 MPa, 3.06 MPa, and 2.88 MPa. The susceptibility of the 3.36 MPa sample follows a Curie law to the lowest temperature. For 3.06 MPa, we observe a kink in χ at 1.1 mK, which is approximately the ordering temperature TN of the pure bulk 3 He if it existed at this pressure. However χ is almost constant down to 0.6 mK, with no drop at 1.1 mK, and no frequency shift, within our resolution of ∼10 Hz. Thus if there is magnetic ordering at 1.1 mK it is quite different than for bulk 3 He, not the U2D2 phase. For 2.88 MPa, χ follows a Curie-Weiss law with a positive Weiss θ=140 μK, indicative of a ferromagnetic tendency, similar to that seen in 2D films.

Notes: The effects of flow on the NMR absorption in the A and B phases of 3He have been studied. While no flow-induced changes in the absorption were seen in the B phase, a variety of phenomena were observed in the A phase. The phenomena include the development of time-dependent satellite peaks, height reductions of the signal, and a splitting of the signal, with a fraction of the signal shifting to lower frequencies. These effects are described and discussed in light of the existing theoretical models. In addition, the NMR shift in the static B-phase liquid confined between 135-Μm-spaced parallel plates has been measured as a function of temperature and the angle between the magnetic field and the plates. These results are compared with previous measurements and are found to be in good agreement. Finally, two effects observed in the static liquid, the disappearance of the B-phase signal under certain conditions and the splitting of the A-phase signal, are described.

Notes: Abstract Recently it was discovered that helium in confined geometries remains a liquid at pressures considerably above bulk melting. By combining a special technique for measuring pressures in small pores with thermal measurements, the phase diagram has been obtained for freezing and melting of4He in Vycor glass. The measurements cover the range of temperature from 0.8 to 2.5 K and extend to pressures of 6.0 MPa. At 1 K,4He is found to remain a liquid up to 4.2 MPa. The change in volume and latent heat on freezing are found and a complete analysis is given of the thermodynamics of freezing of helium in the Vycor.

Notes: Abstract New measurements of the melting pressure of solid3He Pm(T,B) have been made through the paramagnetic phase-to-high field phase transition. Temperatures were determined with Pt NMR and the3He melting pressure in zero field measured in a second cell. In a field of 0.405 T, we find a change in entropy through the HFP-PP transition of ΔS/Rln2=0.13 over a temperature interval of only about 4 µK. Thus, we conclude that the transition is first-order at low fields. The entropy discontinuity decreases with field and the transition region broadens, with the transition possibly becoming second-order above a tricritical point near 0.6 T.

Notes: Abstract The temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility, χ(T), of two samples of the S=1 linear-chain Heisenberg antiferromagnet Ni(C2H8N2)2NO2(ClO4), known as NENP, has been measured from 400 K to 264 µK. Our measurements are in agreement with existing results of other researchers who worked above 1.2 K. Below 1.2 K, χ(T) increases with decreasing temperature. The results suggest that this increase is intrinsic to the NENP and is not a consequence of a single source of paramagnetic impurities in the samples.

Notes: Abstract We report measurements of the asymmetry of the intensities of the quadrupolar fine structure of NMR lines in ferromagnetic MnSb down to 30 mK. The asymmetry ratios provide a means of measuring the temperature, and is an example of the use of population difference thermometry as a primary thermometer for ultra-low temperatures.
