Description: Bester, a hybrid sturgeon (Huso huso L. females ´ Acipenser ruthenus L. males), neither spermiate nor ovulate in the captivity. Thirteen-year-old adult male and female bester were injected with LH-RHa (0.1-0.3 mg/kg B.W.) intramuscularly and spawning status of the treated fish was checked 24-48 hours later. Additionally, changes in serum levels of DHP in both the responded and the non-responded individuals were monitored 0, 1, 3, 6, 9, 12, 24, 48 and 72 hours after treatment. Between 70-100 percent of the LR-RHa injected males individuals, and 11-40 percent of the females spawned 24-48 hours after the treatment; the rest did not respond to the injection. In the responded males, 3-9 hours after the treatment, serum levels of DHP increased; while in the females it occurred first after 12-24 hours. In contrast, during the same period, serum levels of DHP remained low in all non-responded individuals. The present study indicated that using 0.1-1.3 mg/kg B. W. of LH-RHa can induce oocyte maturation and ovulation in the females and spermiation in the males cultured bester. The results suggested additionally DHP as an appropriated steroid that could be used in the final maturation stage of the gonads.

Notes: In1−xGaxSb1−yBiy (0〈x≤0.21, 0〈y≤0.005) quaternary bulk single crystals were grown on InSb seed crystals using a rotary Bridgman method. In order to investigate the quality of these crystals, various kinds of measurements were carried out, such as optical microscope, x-ray topograph, four-crystal x-ray diffractometry, electron-probe microanalysis, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and secondary-ion-mass spectroscopy. All grown crystals were 10 mm in diameter and more than 10 mm in length. This indicates that the rotary Bridgman method was useful to grow quaternary bulk single crystals. Owing to segregation, the compositional ratio of Bi (y) increased and that of Ga (x) decreased as crystals grew. During growth of InGaSbBi, both Ga and Bi diffused into the InSb seed and there appeared domains of InBi. For comparison, InSb1−yBiy (0〈y≤0.05) and In1−xGaxSb (0〈x≤0.16) were grown on InSb. It turned out that Bi did not diffuse into InSb without Ga, but Ga diffused without Bi. The incorporation of Ga produced the excess In and as a result InBi domains were formed.

Notes: A Weissenberg camera for macromolecules with imaging plate data collection system at BL6A and BL18B stations in the Photon Factory is introduced and evaluated. The special feature of these systems is considered matching for both SR-x rays and protein crystallography. This system is user-friendly and can collect a large amount of data to higher resolution from the crystal with large unit cell dimensions. A newly developed camera can be used as a time-resolved Laue camera and a Weissenberg camera. A large image reader (IPR4080) that can scan 400×400 mm2 and 400×800 mm2 sizes of imaging plates has been developed and evaluated. The new data collection system combined with the new camera and IPR4080 will be installed at the BL18B station in October 1994. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have developed a subpicosecond nondegenerate pump-probe spectrometer based on the optical sampling technique using a combination of asynchronous tunable femtosecond lasers. Owing to its simple instrumentation, time evolution of subpicosecond to nanosecond excited molecular processes in solution and of exciton relaxation processes in semiconductor multiple quantum wells has been detected on an oscilloscope by an effective time base magnification of 760 000 times. Fast acquisition of the temporal profiles and ease of wavelength scanning allowed compilation of time-resolved absorption and excitation spectra. A possible extention of the spectrometer with one of the light sources being a synchrotron radiation instead of the femtosecond laser is discussed. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A new technology which makes storage electrode surfaces uneven has been developed for realizing 64 Mbit dynamic random access memories (DRAMs). This technology utilizes a Si film which is deposited by low-pressure chemical vapor deposition at 550 °C and has hemispherical grains (HSG). The surface area of the HSG-Si film is about twice as large as Si films deposited at other temperatures. The specific temperature, 550 °C, corresponds to the transition temperature of the film structure from amorphous to polycrystalline. By applying the HSG-Si film as the storage electrode of a stacked capacitor, a capacitance of twice the value is obtained. The increase of the capacitance makes it possible to reduce the DRAM cell area, even by using a relatively thick dielectric film, thereby providing higher reliability.

Notes: We have presented experimental results for the optical constants of amorphous InSb films prepared by rf plasma deposition. The measured data are analyzed on the basis of a simplified model of nondirect optical transitions between the valence and conduction bands. Introducing a phenomenological damping effect into the model, the calculated spectra become structureless, which are typically observed in tetrahedrally bonded amorphous semiconductors. Results are in reasonable agreement with the experimental data over the entire range of photon energy (0.3–5.3 eV).

Notes: InSb films have been deposited directly by rf sputtering on sapphire substrates. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy data are presented to show that the InSb layer on sapphire (0001) is epitaxial and grows with (111) parallel to the substrate surface. Optical absorption studies of the epitaxial film also reveal distinct spectral features which resemble these from bulk, single-crystal InSb.

Notes: A time-of-flight type neutral particle energy analyzer can discriminate between neutral particle loss and radiation loss from a plasma by use of the difference between their times of flight. The energy distribution of hydrogen atoms which are emitted from the plasma can be estimated from the time evolution of the detector signal. The energy distribution of radiated photons can be obtained by using several filters which transmit different ranges of the photon energy. With this method the ratio of the particle and radiation losses emitted from the same plasma volume and within the same detector solid angle can be obtained.

Notes: Critical temperatures (Tc) of 80 and 107 K are confirmed by resistivity and inductance measurements and also by the Meissner effect. X-ray/electron diffraction and electron microscopy analyses on a single phase material of 80 K show that its structure is orthorhombic with a unit cell of a=5.407 A(ring), b=27.011 A(ring), c= 30.588 A(ring) composed of a pseudotetragonal cell of a=b=5.41 A(ring). The pseudotetragonal cell size and cleavage behavior to very thin flakes strongly indicate that the oxide is basically a lamellar oxide of the Aurivillius phase type, i.e., a stacked layer structure of (Bi2O2)2+ sheets and distorted perovskite cell sheets.
