Notes: Purpose - To succeed in an uncertain environment, firms must respond to changing customer needs, and logistics flexibility is an important part of the response. This paper defines logistics flexibility, creates a framework to understand it, and shows how it relates to customer satisfaction. Design/methodology/approach - The study uses a large sample survey (n=273) from the Society of Manufacturing Engineers to develop valid and reliable instruments to measure logistics flexibility and to test the relationships among the variables using structural equation modeling. Findings - The results indicate strong, positive, and direct relationships between flexible logistics competence and capability, and between flexible logistics capability and customer satisfaction. Research limitations/implications - The dependent and independent variables were measured through a single respondent, which may introduce common-method bias. The respondents were manufacturing executives, which provides only a single perspective. Practical implications - The dichotomy of flexible logistics competence and capability can help managers differentiate between the elements of logistics flexibility that are critical to customers from the elements that support these capabilities. Standing alone, flexible competence may not be sufficient to build a sustainable competitive edge. Originality/value - The paper organizes literature on logistics flexibility and classifies it according to competence and capability theory. It describes a framework to explore the relationships among flexible competence, flexible capability, and customer satisfaction.

Notes: While managers and researchers agree that the fuzzy front end of new product development (NPD) is critical for project success, the meaning of the term "front-end fuzziness" remains vague. It is often used broadly to refer to both the exogenous causes and the internal consequences of fuzziness. This imprecise language makes it difficult for managers to separate cause and effect and thus identify specific prescriptive remedies for "fuzziness" problems. The vagueness of the concept and the lack of a framework for defining "front-end fuzziness" also impede empirical research efforts. Building upon uncertainty theory, we define front-end fuzziness in terms of environmental uncertainties. Front-end fuzziness has consequences for a project's team vision. It reduces the team's sense of shared purpose and causes unclear project targets and priorities. Describes how foundation elements of a firm's overall product development program can help project teams cope with front-end fuzziness.

Notes: This paper develops a conceptual framework that incorporates three innovation strategies and three learning activities through the mechanism of four conversion processes in new product development. Also included is the impact of the three learning activities on performance. The framework can provide a tool for systematically examining the effectiveness of product innovation efforts.

Notes: Reviews quality dimensions, perspectives and practices. An integrated framework is developed to analyze the relationships among quality dimensions, perspectives and practices. This framework incorporates two dimensions of the internal-external focus and objective-subjective measurement. It clarifies the concept of quality and helps practitioners to position their quality management practices. It explains how to resolve equivocality and reduce uncertainty in improving the quality of the products, ultimately to achieve competitive advantage.

Notes: In response to an increasingly global and competitive environment, the flexibility to adapt to changing market needs and develop innovative cross-functional processes is quintessential to success. Emphasizes that, in order to succeed in BPR, the firm must make the organizational structure change from a hierarchical to a flat form, management goals must change from being functional sub-optimized to global-optimization, process-oriented measurement, and employees' work must change from being fragmented to team-oriented. It is important that the firm combine core business process reengineering and holistic outsourcing and rethink its business from an integrated, systematic "whole" and value chain viewpoint to beat competition with flexibility and innovation.

Notes: Purpose - To identify what constitutes web site quality or what makes a web site effective. Design/methodology/approach - This article examines and integrates four sets of factors that capture e-commerce web site quality using an IS success model: system quality, information quality, service quality, and attractiveness. A questionnaire survey was conducted to verify the measures of web site quality. Based on TAM, a framework is also developed relating web site quality to customers' beliefs (perceived usefulness and ease of use), attitudes (preferences for the site), and intentions (to revisit the site). Findings - A set of instruments of web site quality has been developed and empirically validated by factor analysis. Research limitations/implications - The research is based on a sample of students browsing several book web sites and they may not sense the web site quality across different B2C commercial web sites such as music, computer, travel, clothes and flowers. Data in these domains should be collected in any future research to examine further the measures developed here. Practical implications - Guidelines for web interface design are proposed. Originality/value - This paper fulfils the identification of web site quality and the development and validation of its measures and offers a framework and practical guidelines for e-commerce managers and web designers.

Notes: As manufacturing systems change from island of automation to enterprise-wise integration, object-oriented database and database management systems have many superior features to meet the new requirements. Based on the comparison with relational databases, this paper discusses the selections and characteristics of the object-oriented database and database management systems (OODBMS) in manufacturing and summarizes the current studies and applications. It helps managers to choose appropriate OODBMS products based on the degree of complexity of their firm's entity and data items. It provides a direction for future research.

Description: A series of tests were carried out to evaluate crack resistance and mechanical properties of polyvinyl alcohol fiber-reinforced cement-stabilized macadam, which is widely used as pavement base or subbase composite material. Three series of cement-stabilized macadam mixtures with cement content of 3.2%, 3.6%, and 4.0% were prepared by incorporating four various contents (0, 0.6, 0.9, and 1.2 kg/m3) and lengths (12, 18, 24, and 30 mm) of polyvinyl alcohol fiber. The optimum polyvinyl alcohol fiber content, fiber length, and cement content were determined based on the mechanical properties of cement-stabilized macadam mixtures. Then, unconfined compressive strength test, compressive resilience modulus test, splitting strength test, flexural tensile strength test, drying shrinkage test, and temperature shrinkage test were carried out in this study. The results show that polyvinyl alcohol fiber-reinforced cement-stabilized prepared by optimum proportions (cement 3.6%, fiber content 0.9 kg/m3, and fiber length 24 mm) has good crack resistance. The incorporation of polyvinyl alcohol fiber can effectively improve compressive strength and splitting strength, while its effect on CRM of cement-stabilized macadam is not remarkable. The anti-dry-shrinkage property and anti-temperature-shrinkage property of the specimens are also drastically improved due to the reinforcement effect of polyvinyl alcohol fiber. Moreover, the crack resistance index is proposed to evaluate the crack resistance of materials. The crack resistance of PVA fiber-reinforced cement-stabilized macadam prepared by optimum proportions is improved by 44.4%. Consequently, the mechanical properties and crack resistance of cement-stabilized macadam are obviously improved by adding polyvinyl alcohol fiber.
