Notes: Gd-Tb-Fe amorphous films were prepared in an rf sputtering system. Torque measurements were performed systematically on samples which were as-deposited or annealed at 160 °C up to 98 h in air. The torque curves showed additional peaks near 0° and 180°, which increased in amplitude with annealing time. The origin of the anomalous torque curves was investigated with computer simulation, Auger analysis, Kerr rotation and magnetization measurements, and chemical etching. It is concluded that the additional peaks on the torque curve arise from the surface oxidation layer which can be characterized with parameters determined by the computer simulation.

Notes: We have investigated the local structural anisotropy of Tb/Fe multilayers using linear polarized synchrotron radiation. X-ray absorption measurements were performed at Fe K edge (7.1 keV) using normal and glancing angle incident photon. From the Fe extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), the local structural anisotropy was found for all multilayers as a slight difference of oscillation amplitude between the two incident directions. From the Fourier transformed EXAFS spectra, it is found that the local structural anisotropy shows the maximum at bilayer period of about 1 nm, where perpendicular magnetic anisotropy also shows the maximum value in various rare-earth/transition metal multilayers. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The resonant nonlinear refraction in rare-earth-doped solids is studied with femtosecond degenerate pump-probe two-beam coupling spectroscopy. The phase modulation induced by the pump pulses is shown to result in a significant contribution to the differential change of the probe transmission. An ultrafast resonant nonlinear refractive index of the order of 1×10−18 m2/W is measured in Nd:YVO4 crystals. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: This work investigates and compares three laser-based ac heating methods for measuring thermal diffusivity of free-standing thin-film structures. These methods employ a modulated laser beam as the heating source and a miniature thermocouple as the temperature sensor. Three laser beam configurations including uniform illumination, a line, and a point are utilized as the heating sources. Different models and systems are developed for these beam configurations. Samples studied include a GaAs/AlGaAs two-layer thin-film structure, a periodic GaAs/AlAs thin-film structure, and a silicon film. Both the phase and amplitude signals of the ac temperature rise of samples are used to derive their thermal diffusivities. It is found that the uniform illumination method is more susceptible to error than the other two configurations due to two-dimensional effects. Both the line and the point source configurations yield satisfactory results. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: This work investigates the temperature dependence of GaAs/AlAs thin-film structures. Based on an ac calorimetric method, the thermal diffusivity of a 700 A(ring)/700 A(ring) GaAs/AlAs periodic structure is measured from 190 to 450 K. Thermal conductivity of the structure is derived from the experiment. The results demonstrate that the thermal conductivity/diffusivity of the structure are lower than its corresponding bulk values. The temperature dependence of its thermophysical properties is weaker than that of typical bulk III–V materials. Interface scattering is believed as the major cause of the observed reduction in thermal conductivity. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Ultrafast phase dynamics of free-induction decay for carriers in bulk GaAs is studied with differential-phase spectroscopy. The instantaneous phase shifts of the free-induction decay with respect to the excitation pulses are extracted from simultaneously recorded laser pulse autocorrelation and free-induction decay in GaAs. Ultrafast phase dynamics during and immediately after the femtosecond pulse excitation are numerically evaluated with optical Bloch equations using pump pulse and semiconductor exciton parameters as input. Good agreement of the theory with experiment is obtained. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Thermal stability has been investigated for the structure and the perpendicular anisotropy Ku of Nd44Gd56/Fe89Co11 multilayer films with the bilayer period of 1 nm, where Ku becomes the maximum. From the results of isothermal annealing at temperature Ta, it has been found that the saturation magnetization Ms scarcely changes up to Ta=400 °C, while Ku is almost constant up to Ta=200 °C but decreases rather quickly for Ta above 200 °C. The decrease in Ku for Ta(approximately-greater-than)260 °C is accompanied by the decrease in the peak intensity of low angle x-ray diffraction, namely by the deterioration of the layered structure.

Notes: Nd-Co and Nd-FeCo amorphous films are known to have larger Kerr rotation θk at shorter wavelength and ultraviolet light compared with other RE-TM (rare earth-transition) amorphous films. This property is desirable for MO (magneto-optical) media for the next generation. In order to satisfy the perpendicular magnetization condition, we replaced a part of Nd by Gd to decrease the saturation magnetization Ms and applied the multilayer (ML) structure to enhance the perpendicular anisotropy Ku. Then we succeeded in getting a new ML medium of Nd0.34Gd0.66/Fe0.9Co0.1 with a bilayer period of 1 nm. However, the substitution of 66% Gd resulted in undesirable decreases of Kerr rotation and coercivity. In this experiment, a part of Nd is replaced by either Tb or Dy instead of Gd with an expectation that the amount of replacement to get the perpendicular magnetization configuration may be smaller since Tb and Dy have large one ion anisotropy compared with Gd. The magnetic and MO properties of Nd(Tb,Dy)/FeCo MLs will be reported. In the case of Tb, for example, a square Kerr hysteresis loop is obtained by the substitution of about 40%. However, θK at 400 nm is about 0.30°, which is larger than that of Tb-FeCo but smaller than NdGd/FeCo MLs.

Notes: Coherent dynamic property of neodymium yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) crystal at 77 K is studied via the conventional absorption, the femtosecond fringe-resolved wave packet interferometry, and the related difference-phase spectrum. The recorded interferogram exhibits beatings in subpicosecond time scale arising from the interferences among various weakly split 4f-electronic states and the coupled vibronic optical phonon sidebands. The electron–phonon coupling in Nd:YAG can be well described by multiple Brownian oscillators model involving in each individual electronic transition. The parameters for characterizing material coherence and relaxation are determined via the theoretical modelings of both the frequency and the time-domain experimental signals. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
