    Notizen: The radiative lifetimes of the v(triple-prime)3 = 0–2 levels of the CH3S (A˜ 2A1) radical have been determined by means of the laser-induced fluorescence technique. CH3S was generated by either laser photolysis of CH3SSCH3 (both in cell and in supersonic expansion) or the reaction of F and CH3SH in a discharge-flow system. The radiative lifetimes for v(triple-prime)3 = 0, 1, and 2 levels are 1105±25, 910±20, and 250±10 ns, respectively, greater than previously reported values. The rate coefficients for the v(triple-prime)3 = 0, 1, and 2 levels for quenching by CH3SSCH3 have also been determined to be 7.8, 7.8, and 16.5×10−10 cm3 molecule−1 s−1, respectively.

    Notizen: The dispersed fluorescence of the A˜ 2A1–X˜ 2E system of CH3O and 13CH3O in a supersonic jet was recorded after excitation of various vibrational levels of the A˜ state. Analysis of the spectra yielded ν2‘ = 1412, ν3‘ = 1047, ν5‘ = 1494, and ν6‘ = 653 cm−1 for the X˜ state of 12CH3O, and ν2‘ = 1408, ν3‘ = 1027, ν5‘ = 1488, and ν6‘ = 649 cm−1 for 13CH3O. The least-squares fitting of the observed 300–306 lines (with spin–orbit splitting removed) yielded ωe=1057±3 cm−1 and ωexe=7.0±0.7 cm−1 for ν3‘ of 12CH3O. Several tentative assignments were also made on the basis of the improved fluorescence spectra. The Fermi-resonant levels 1289 and 1319 cm−1 above v=0 of the A˜ state were also reassigned; the former is better represented as v2' = 1, whereas the latter is represented as v3' = 2.

    Notizen: The rate coefficient of the reaction of HSO with O3 at five temperatures in the range 273–423 K was determined by means of the discharge-flow/laser-induced-fluorescence technique. The laser-induced fluorescence of HSO was detected by the gated photon-counting technique; a detection limit ∼4×109 molecules cm−3 was achieved. The reaction was carried out under pseudo-first-order conditions with [O3](very-much-greater-than)[HSO]; the rate coefficient was determined to be k=(4.7±1.0)×10−14 cm3 molecule−1 s−1 at 298 K, approximately 30% greater than, but within experimental uncertainty of the only previous measurement by Wang and Howard by means of the discharge-flow/laser-magnetic-resonance technique. The temperature dependence of the rate coefficient is expressed in the Arrhenius form, k(T)=(2.1±0.7)×10−12 exp[−(1120±320)/T] cm3 molecule−1 s−1.

    Notizen: Laser photofragmentation processes of the doubly charged ions SiF22+ and SiF32+ are studied at 1064, 532, and 355 nm. The observed photoproducts are compared with those of the reaction pathways induced by the collisions of these dications with the rare gases. Photodissociation, via absorption of a single photon occurs readily for both dications, and the photoion yields are dominated by the products of neutral-loss pathways: SiF2+ from SiF22+ and SiF22+ from SiF32+. A minor contribution from photoinduced charge separation is also observed. For SiF22+, a neutral-loss pathway forming the atomic dication Si2+ is also detected at higher photon energies. The excitation energy required for this fragmentation process is determined to be 2.2±0.2 eV. Collisions of SiF22+ and SiF32+ with He and Ne are also dominated by neutral-loss reactions. With the heavier rare gases, charge transfer is exothermic and dominates the product ion yield, although neutral-loss reactions still occur. Interpretation of the charge transfer results using Landau–Zener theory suggests that two electronic states of SiF22+, lying at 31.0±0.5 eV and 35.5±0.5 eV above the ground state of the neutral molecule, are present in the dication beam. Ab initio calculations reveal that SiF32+ adopts an equilibrium geometry of C2v symmetry with one elongated bond. Hence, electron capture by SiF32+ results in the formation of SiF3+ in an energetically unfavorable conformation. By taking account of these geometry differences in the Landau–Zener algorithm, a satisfactory rationalization of the ion yields from the charge transfer reactions of SiF32+ is achieved. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Chlamydia is predicted to encode two alternative sigma factors that could provide a mechanism for the regulation of gene expression via alternative forms of RNA polymerase. We have demonstrated that σ28, one of these alternative sigma factors, is transcriptionally active. Chlamydial σ28 RNA polymerase was reconstituted from recombinant σ28 protein and core enzyme that was biochemically isolated from chlamydiae. In an in vitro transcription assay, σ28 RNA polymerase transcribed the hctB promoter in a σ28-dependent manner. Transcription by σ28 RNA polymerase was salt tolerant compared with transcription by σ66 RNA polymerase, the major form of chlamydial RNA polymerase. As hctB encodes a histone-like protein that is only expressed late in the developmental cycle, our results suggest that σ28 RNA polymerase has a role in the regulation of late gene expression in Chlamydia.

    Notizen: TiAlN, and TiAlN/CrN nanolayered coatings were synthesized by cathodic-arcevaporation with plasma enhanced duct equipment. Chromium and TiAl (50/50 at %) alloy cathodeswere used for the deposition of TiAlN/CrN coatings. The effects of bilayer thickness and chromiumcontent on the microstructure and mechanical properties of TiAlN/CrN nanolayered coatings werestudied. The preferred orientation was changed from (200) in TiAlN monolayered coatings to (111)plane in the multilayered TiAlN/CrN coatings. The multilayered TiAlN/CrN coating with periodicthickness of 20 nm and the smallest crystallite size of 28 nm exhibited the highest hardness of 39GPa. The multilayered TiAlN/CrN coatings also showed the best adhesion strength using scratchtests. It has been found that the structural and mechanical properties of the films were correlatedwith the addition of chromium and nanolayer thickness
