    Description: In support of the Tropical Oceans and Global Atmosphere (TOGA) program, investigators from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), NOAA Pacific Marine Envionmental Laboratory and the State Oceanic Administration (SOA) from both Qingdao (First Institute) and Guangzhou (South China Sea Branch) conducted hydrographic observations aboard the Chinese Research vessels Xiang Yang Hong 5 and Xiang Yang Hong 14 in the western equatorial Pacific. The objective of this component of the TOGA program was to document the water mass property distributions of the western equatorial Pacific Ocean and describe the oceanic velocity field. The four cruises summarized here were conducted during the period November 1985 to June 1988 and are the first half of an eight cruise repeated survey of the region scheduled to be completed in spring 1990. Conductivity-Temperatue-Depth-Oxygen (CTD/02) stations were collected to a minimum cast depth of 2,500 m or the bottom when shallower. The cruises reoccupied the same stations to provide temporal information. Summarized listings of CTD/O2 data together with selected physical properties of sea water for these cruises are provided here, as well as a description of the hardware used and an explanation of the data reduction tehniques employed.

    Description: A series of laboratory intercalibrations of a CTD system were undertaken between 1986 and 1990 as part of cooperative research program between the United States (US) and People's Republic of China (PRC). A comparison of US and PRC calibration facility standards is carried out using a NBIS/EG&G Marine Instruments Mark IIIb CTD system as a "quasi-transfer standard." When compared with the quoted accuracy of the calibration facilities, pressure was found to be more accurate and temperatue was about as accurate as stated. The conductivity standard differences between facilities are difficult to assess because of the CTD conductivity sensor drift.

    Notes: Based on the 4×4 matrix method for inhomogeneous uniaxial media by Berreman [J. Opt. Soc. Am. 62, 502 (1972); 63, 1374 (1973)] and by Wöhler et al. [J. Opt. Soc. Am. A 5, 1554 (1988)], a simple method to eliminate the Fabry–Perot effect caused by optical discontinuities at the input and output interfaces has been developed. It facilitates an easy comparison between the results of the Jones matrix method and the 4×4 matrix method without the time-consuming spectral average for the latter. Modeling the case of liquid-crystal displays with incoherent back-light sources, this new method will either improve the accuracy with similar computation time or save computation time with similar accuracy, as compared to the ordinary "faster'' 4×4 matrix method.

The progress on the extension of the HT-7 ohmic discharge operation region was introduced.     Notes: The effects of built-in biaxial strain on Γ-X transport in n-GaAs/i-InxAl1−xAs/n-GaAs pseudomorphic single-barrier structures (x=0, 0.03, and 0.06) are studied by measuring temperature-dependent I-V characteristics. For the accurate characterization of electron transport across each barrier, a self-consistent numerical model is used to analyze the experimental results. For each structure, the four barrier parameters defined from the thermionic-field-emission theory, the effective Richardson constant A*, the conduction-band offsets ΔEc1,2, and a tunneling mass mn* are extracted by calculating the theoretical I-V characteristics and fitting them to the experimental I-V-T data. The experimentally obtained X-point conduction-band shifts with the addition of indium are compared with the theoretical results calculated based on the model-solid theory. The results indicate that the addition of indium not only splits the degenerate X minima of the InxAl1−xAs barrier, but also shifts the relative barrier heights of both longitudinal and transverse X valleys due to the alloy-dependent band-structure modification. The comparison between the experimental and theoretical results illustrates that the transverse X valleys are the main conduction channel for the Γ-X transport across InxAl1−xAs pseudomorphic barriers. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.
