    Description: Phialophora as defined by its type species P. verrucosa is a genus of Chaetothyriales, and a member of the group known as ‘black yeasts and relatives’. Phialophora verrucosa has been reported from mutilating human infections such as chromoblastomycosis, disseminated phaeohyphomycosis and mycetoma, while morphologically similar fungi are rather commonly isolated from the environment. Phenotypes are insufficient for correct species identification, and molecular data have revealed significant genetic variation within the complex of species currently identified as P. verrucosa or P. americana. Multilocus analysis of 118 strains revealed the existence of five reproductively isolated species apparently having different infectious potentials. Strains of the sexual morph Capronia semiimmersa cluster within P. americana. The newly defined taxa differ markedly in their predilection for the human host.

    Notes: Fe(110)/W(110) superlattices with various Fe and W layer thicknesses have been fabricated by magnetron sputtering and studied by x-ray diffraction (XRD) and superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometry. Detailed x-ray analysis reveals that, while the superlattice structure is faithfully reproduced throughout the samples, there is noticeable interdiffusion between the Fe and W layers. Consequently, within the intermixed region a diminution of the Fe moments is observed, while the remaining Fe moments have values close to the bulk value.

    Notes: In this study, high-quality ZnO:Al (ZAO) films were prepared by using dc reaction magnetron sputtering technology. The effect of Al doped in ZnO films on electrical and optical properties and its scattering mechanism were discussed in detail. The results showed that Al2O3 could be effectively removed by controlling oxygen flow and Al-doped concentration during deposition of ZnO:Al films. Zn, Al, and oxygen elements were well distributed through the films. For highly degenerated ZnO:Al semiconductor thin films, it was revealed that ionized impurity scattering dominated the Hall mobility of the films in the low-temperature range; while the lattice vibration became a major scattering mechanism in the high-temperature range. The grain-boundary scattering only played a major role in the ZAO films with small grain size (as compared to the electron mean-free path). The photoelectric properties of ZAO films showed that the lower resistivity (∼5×10−4 Ω cm) was obtained, and transmittance in the visible range and reflectance in the IR region were above 80% and 60%, respectively. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The most dramatic changes in the properties of granular metals occur near the percolation threshold xc, which generally occurs at a volume fraction of approximately 0.50. There has been much speculation concerning the evolution of magnetic domains at xc, however, no direct observations have been produced. Using scanning electron microscopy with polarization analysis, we investigate the formation of domains in a series of granular Co-Ag samples. We find xc to lie in the range [0.50, 0.55], and we report on the size and morphology of the observed domains. Below xc, a domain pattern appears which may be due either to interparticle correlations or to residual Co in the silver matrix; we have previously discussed the ramifications of this observation on an understanding of GMR. In this paper, we place limits on the latter of these two models. Above xc, the domains resemble "stripe domains'' which have been observed in amorphous materials. This observation suggests the presence of anisotropy perpendicular to the film plane. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have observed an extremely narrow absorption spectrum due to bound-to-continuum transition in GaAs/AlxGa1−xAs multiple quantum wells (MQWs). Its linewidth is only about one tenth of the values reported previously. Our calculation indicates that the broadening of the excited state in the continuum has little contribution to the absorption linewidth. We have grown a sample whose MQW region contains two kinds of wells with a minor thickness inhomogeneity. Its resultant absorption linewidth is six times as large as that of homogeneous well sample, which is in good agreement with our theoretical analysis. Thus we can suggest that the wider absorption spectra reported by many authors may be due to the well width inhomogeneity. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The discovery of oscillatory interlayer exchange coupling in a new type of ceramic superlattice system Fe–N/TiN, is reported. The magnitude of the exchange coupling was found to oscillate with the thickness of the TiN spacer layer and Fe–N ferromagnetic layer with periods about 0.8 and 0.6 nm, respectively. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Ta/NiO/NiFe/Ta multilayers were prepared by rf reactive and dc magnetron sputtering. The exchange coupling field between NiO and NiFe reached 120 Oe. The composition and chemical states at the interface region of NiO/NiFe were studied using the x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and peak decomposition technique. The results show that there are two thermodynamically favorable reactions at NiO/NiFe interface: NiO+Fe=Ni+FeO and 3NiO+2Fe=3Ni+Fe2O3. The thickness of the chemical reaction as estimated by angle-resolved XPS was about 1–1.5 nm. These interface reaction products are magnetic defects, and we believe that the exchange coupling field Hex and the coercivity Hc of NiO/NiFe are affected by these defects. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
