Notes: The microwave properties of epitaxial YBa2Cu3O7−x thin films with critical temperatures Tc up to 91.5 K and critical current densities Jc up to 6×106 A/cm2 at 77 K have been investigated between 5 and 20 GHz using coplanar transmission line resonators. Information about the surface resistance Rs and the magnetic penetration depth λL has been obtained from temperature- and power-dependent measurements of the quality factors and resonance frequencies of the resonators. The lowest surface resistance was 105 μΩ at 77 K and 38 μΩ at 9 K measured at 6.2 GHz, respectively. The dependence of Rs on the surface magnetic field Brf showed that with decreasing film quality the films exhibit a granular behavior. At high critical current densities Jc(approximately-greater-than)4×106 A/cm2, the intrinsic properties of the material show up. The magnetic penetration depth was in the range between 160 and 270 nm. Both Rs and λL turned out to be sensitive to the film quality represented by the transition width ΔTc and the critical current density Jc at 77 K.

Notes: High harmonics generated due to the scattering of relativistic electrons from high intensity laser light is studied. The experiments are carried out with an Nd:Glass laser system with a peak intensity of 2×1018 W cm−2 in underdense plasma. It is shown that, at high intensities, when the normalized electric field approaches unity, in addition to the conventional atomic harmonics from bound electrons there is significant contribution to the harmonic spectrum from free electrons. The characteristic signatures of this are found to be the emission of even order harmonics, linear dependence on the electron density, significant amount of harmonics even with circular polarization and a much smaller spatial region over which these harmonics are produced as compared to the atomic case. Imaging of the harmonic beam shows that it is emitted in a narrow cone with a divergence of 2 to 3 degrees. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We present a formal comparison between dc and ac nulling optical bridges. We consider their performance in monitoring over long periods of time (several minutes), small and slow (in a time scale of seconds) changes in transmittance of an optical component. We consider two fundamentally different ac optical bridges (OB), an amplitude modulated optical bridge (AM-OB), and a switching optical bridge (Sw-OB). For each OB, we derive a general expression for the minimum detectable change in transmittance (|ΔT|min), taking into account all the important noises. It is found that under optimum conditions the dc- and AM-OB have similar detection limits imposed by the 1/f noise of the photodetectors. It is shown that the Sw-OB can in principle overcome the 1/f noise of the detector and approach the shot-noise limit; however, it is sensitive to switching device imperfections (to first order in smallness), which could easily prevent achieving a detection limit below the 1/f noise. It is also shown that the Sw-OB has intrinsic advantages over the dc- and AM-OB for its use in remote sensors. It can eliminate more efficiently noise induced along the propagation of light from the sensing point to the photodetector. We conclude that when using low power optics (P≤1 mW) and considering a bench instrument, the dc- and AM-OB can be used for a target resolution down to |ΔT|min(approximate)10−5–10−6. The Sw-OB optical bridges should be chosen if |ΔT|min(approximate)10−6–10−8 is to be attempted. In any case, strict conditions are to be met before considering approaching the detection limits imposed by electronic noises. These conditions are discussed in detail. In particular, atmospheric isolation will be needed in general below |ΔT|min(approximate)10−4. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The theoretical performances of a split detector and a lateral effect detector used as a position sensitive device in the optical beam deflection method are compared. It is shown that the limit to the resolution in both cases is essentially equal. The possibility of improving the resolution in angle deflection by reflecting the beam from a cylindrical mirror, as was recently proposed by A. Yarai, Y. Fukunaga, K. Sakamoto, and T. Nakanishi [Jpn. J. Appl. Phys. 33, 3251 (1994)] is also explored. It is shown that using a cylindrical mirror does not result in a smaller theoretical limit to the resolution. However, it does improve the resolution in some cases and may have practical uses. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We present the first coplanar waveguide transmission line resonator patterned from a perovskite high Tc superconducting film at 9 GHz. At 77 K the unloaded quality factor Q0 of the resonator patterned from a YBa2Cu3O7−x film on a MgO substrate is 1300, that is, 14 times higher than that of the copper resonator and 17 times higher than that of the gold resonator at the same temperature. At 4.2 K a Q0 factor of 3300 was measured for the YBa2Cu3O7−x /MgO resonator. Simple calculations of the quality factor show that values of 10 000 at 77 K should be possible using better substrates, films, and etching techniques. This resonator could form the basic structure of more complex microwave filter systems operating at liquid-nitrogen temperatures.

Notes: We describe measurements of the specific resistivity of epitaxially grown YBa2Cu3O7−x thin films in the presence of a magnetic field of up to 1 T at 270 MHz. At 77 K and 300 mT a 70-fold reduction of the specific resistance, as compared to liquid nitrogen cooled copper, is achieved. These results suggest a possible application of these films as small receiving coils with improved sensitivity in low field nuclear magnetic resonance imaging systems.

Notes: We derive a perturbative series solution to the capacitance between two parallel electrodes with irregular profiles. The coefficients in the series are calculated using fast Fourier transform algorithms resulting in a very fast method. The applicability of the perturbative series solution is extended by introducing a spectral window function which can make the series converge in cases where the standard series does not converge. We show that the filtered perturbative solution is applicable to surface profiles with surprisingly large features. However, limitations on its applicability to surfaces with high spatial frequencies remain. Perturbation theory could be a powerful tool for simulating surface-profile images obtained by scanning a capacitive probe. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: : Cholesterol oxidation products (COPs) are present in biological tissues and in foods. The inhibitory effect of antioxidants, such as tocopherols, on COPs formation has been only partially investigated. The antioxidant effect of dl alpha-, dl beta-, dl gamma-, and dl-delta tocopherol on the metal-induced oxidation of phosphatidylcholine (PC): cholesterol liposomes was assayed. Formation during liposome oxidation of six different COPs was monitored by gas chromatography. dl alpha-, and dl gamma-tocopherol show good inhibitory effect against PC-fatty acid oxidation and also on COPs formation. dl delta-Tocopherol is less effective than the alpha-and gamma-homologous, beta-tocopherol being unable to prevent PC and cholesterol oxidation. dl alpha-, and dl gamma-Tocopherol are more effective to prevent the oxidation of the lateral chain of cholesterol molecule. At the highest tocopherol concentration assayed, dl alpha-tocopherol shows prooxidant effect, enhancing liposomal oxidation and COPs formation. It is concluded that the tocopherols assayed can inhibit cholesterol oxidation but to a different degree.
