Notes: An XeCl excimer laser was operated at the high repetition rate of 2.5 kHz, which can circulate the laser gas uniformly and efficiently. The characteristics of the gas flow rate and the average laser power versus the repetition rate were investigated in both He and Ne buffer gas mixtures. In He buffer gas, the average laser power saturates at 1.3 kHz and, thereafter, drops abruptly. On the other hand, stable operation at the highest repetition rate, 2.5 kHz, has been attained in Ne buffer at a gas flow rate of 54 m/s with an average laser power of 87 W.

Notes: In neutral-beam-injection (NBI) heated plasmas of the Compact Helical System (CHS) heliotron/torsatron [K. Matsuoka et al., Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research, 1988 (International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, 1989), Vol. 2, p. 441], inward turbulent particle flux is observed at a particular radial location near the plasma edge. The observed reversal of the particle flux is connected to the change in the cross-phase between electron density and poloidal electric field fluctuations. This phenomenon is observed in the parameter regime of low collisionality at the electron temperature Te〉15 eV, electron density ne〈3×1018 m−3, which approximately corresponds to the effective collision frequency normalized by the transit frequency of a circulating particle ν*(approximately-less-than)1. The large inward particle flux ((approximately-greater-than)1×1020 m−2 s−1) correlates with the positive shear of the radial electric field Er′ ((approximately-greater-than)1×106 V m−2), but does not have clear correlation with the radial electric field Er and the curvature Er″. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A 20 channel PIN-photodiode array is installed on the compact helical system (CHS) heliotron/torsatron to measure the radial profiles of soft x-ray (SXR) emission and fluctuations. In neutral beam injection (NBI) heated plasma on CHS, sawtooth oscillations are often observed in the SXR signals. The sawtooth has a characteristic feature of the off-axis sawtooth crash that takes place first near the 1/q=1/2 rational surface located at the normalized minor radius ρ(approximate)0.4−0.6, where q is the safety factor. In most of cases high frequency precursor and low frequency postcursor oscillations having m/n=2/1 mode structure (m, n: the poloidal and toroidal mode numbers) appear before and after the crash. The total plasma beta derived from the measurement of SXR emission-peak position is slightly but clearly decreased by the sawtooth crash. This reduction suggests rapid transport of energetic beam ions from the core region toward the plasma edge region. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Thermodynamic and transport properties of heavy Fermion (HF) U compounds show similar behavior to HF Ce compounds. Although most of the magnetic properties of HF Ce compounds can be qualitatively understood on the basis of the impurity Kondo model, no such consensus for HF U compounds has been reached. In addition to this, the single-site properties of U impurities are not understood so well, in contrast to the case of Ce impurities. Recent works for dilute U systems reported new features as are not seen in dilute Ce systems. We have investigated a dilute-U2Zn17 system of (La1−zUz)2Zn17 in order to reveal the single U ion site properties of this system by preparing single crystals. The impurity contributions to various physical quantities such as ρimp(T), χimp(T), and Cimp(T) can be scaled by the U concentration between z=0.025 and 0.05, and the system is considered as in the dilute limit still for z=0.05. The electrical resistivity shows the typical impurity-Kondo upturn at low temperatures. The electronic specific-heat coefficient is strongly enhanced (γimp(approximate)1.5 J/K2 mole U) and about 4 times as large as that for dense U2Zn17. Suppressions of the Kondo effect by the magnetic field are seen in γimp(H) and magnetoresistance. The relatively large anisotropy in χimp(T) indicates an existence of the crystal field. These features of this system will be explained in terms of the Kondo effect in the presence of the crystal field. ©1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A promising fabrication method for a Si1−xGex-on-insulator (SGOI) virtual substrate and evaluation of strain in the Si layer on this SGOI substrate are presented. A 9-nm-thick SGOI layer with x=0.56 was formed by dry oxidation after epitaxial growth of Si0.92Ge0.08 on a silicon-on-insulator substrate. During the oxidation, Ge atoms were rejected from the surface oxide layer and condensed in the remaining SGOI layer, which was partially relaxed without introducing a significant amount of dislocations. It is found from the analysis of the Raman spectra that the strained Si layer grown on the SGOI layer involves a tensile strain of 1%. This strained Si on the SGOI structure is applicable to sub-100-nm metal–oxide–semiconductor field-effect transistors. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We performed a theoretical study on the collapse transition of a single polyelectrolyte chain induced by multivalent cations, under the framework of the mean-field theory by taking into account the effect of small mobile ions. For a sufficiently long chain, the folding transition is found to be a two-step process; from coil to segregated and from segregated to collapsed, where the segregated state means the coexistence of an elongated coil part and a collapsed compact part in a single polymer chain in the equilibrium state. These transitions are considered to reflect competition between two states with double minima in the free energy; i.e., a first-order phase transition in a mesoscopic system. With the experimental technique of single chain observation by fluorescence microscopy, we monitored the folding transition of individual giant DNAs. The results of this experiment indicate the actual existence of the two-step folding transition in single DNA molecules. The translational entropy of ions may play an important role in this process. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: [Auszug] Since the toad (Bufo vulgaris japonious) has long olfactory nerves, potentials can be recorded in the olfactory epithelium, nerve and bulb simultaneously. By olfactory stimulation, potential oscillations appeared in these tissues as well (Fig. 1). Those which appeared in the olfactory nerve and ...
