    Notes: A temporal linear stability analysis of an inviscid incompressible gas jet injected into a coflowing viscous liquid confined within a tube was conducted to study the growth of small disturbances that lead to the breakup of the gas jet. For low-viscosity liquids, the confinement of the liquid jet did not affect the growth rates of the gas-jet disturbances. However, for high viscosity liquids, confining the liquid jet results in a significant increase in the disturbance growth rate and the range of unstable wave numbers. Also, for small ratios of the liquid jet diameter to gas jet diameter, the change in disturbance growth rate with Weber number is small. The effect of Weber number becomes significant only at large values of the diameter ratio. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A temporal linear stability analysis of an inviscid incompressible swirling gas jet injected into a co-flowing liquid was conducted. The ratio of the tangential velocity to the axial velocity (swirl number) played a significant role in the destabilization of the gas jet. Even at small gas Weber numbers, the presence of swirl caused the higher order azimuthal modes to become unstable; the growth rates, and the dominant and limiting wave numbers of the higher order modes were greater than those of the varicose and sinuous modes. The differences in growth rates, limiting and dominant wave numbers of the various azimuthal modes became significant at large gas Weber numbers. An increase in liquid viscosity resulted in a reduction in the growth rates and the dominant wave numbers. The liquid co-flow velocity controlled the phase velocity of the unstable modes. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Two partial 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) synthase cDNA clones (pWAS1, 1089 bp; andpWAS3, 779 bp) were isolated by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using cDNA to total mRNA purified from etiolated wheat seedlings as template and degenerate oligonucleotides synthesized based on the regions of the ACC synthase amino acid sequence that are highly conserved among different plants. Northern analysis showed that the expression of the corresponding genes are differentially regulated. While the transcripts ofpWAS1 were found in all the tissues of wheat that were tested with a maximum level at the early stages of spike development,pWAS3 mRNA was present almost exclusively in the root. A 5590-bp genomic clone,TA-ACS2, corresponding topWAS3 cDNA has been isolated. TheTA-ACS2 sequence consists of a 589-bp 5′-upstream region, 2743 bp of transcribed region with four exons and three introns and a 3′-downstream region of 2257 bp. Expression inEscherichia coli confirmed the ACC synthase activity of TA-ACS2 polypeptide. Sequence comparisons show that the two wheat ACC synthases are more similar to each other and to the rice ACC synthase,OS-ACS1, at the nucleotide level than at the amino acid level. The amino acid sequence of TA-ACS2 is most similar (66.1% identity) to that of broccoli. The chromosomal location of both wheat ACC synthase genes have been determined by aneuploid analysis.TA-ACS1 is located on the short arm of chromosomes 7A and 7D and on the long arm of chromosome 4A.TA-ACS2 is located on the long arm of homoeologous group 2 chromosomes.

    Description: Successful meiotic progression of germ cells is crucial for gametogenesis. Defects in this process affect proper genetic transmission and sometimes lead to tumor formation in the germline. In Caenorhabditis elegans , the RNA-binding protein GLD-1 is essential for the meiotic development of oocytes. However, its role during spermatogenesis has not been understood. Here, we show that GLD-1 functions redundantly with the PUF family protein PUF-8 to ensure proper meiotic development of spermatocytes. When grown at 20°—the standard laboratory temperature for C. elegans growth—primary spermatocytes in both gld-1 and puf-8 single-mutant males and hermaphrodites complete the meiotic divisions normally. By contrast, some of the gld-1 ; puf-8 double-mutant spermatocytes exit meiosis and form germ cell tumors in both sexes. During larval development, gld-1 ; puf-8 double-mutant germ cells begin to express the meiotic marker HIM-3 , lose P granules, and form the sperm-specific membranous organelle, which are characteristics of developing spermatocytes. However, some of these cells quickly lose HIM-3 and form germ cell tumors that lack membranous organelle but contain P granules. Mutations that block meiotic progression at late pachytene or diakinetic stage fail to arrest the tumorigenesis, suggesting that the gld-1 ; puf-8 double-mutant spermatocytes exit meiosis prior to the completion of pachytene. Together, results presented here uncover a novel function for gld-1 in the meiotic development of spermatocytes in both hermaphrodites and males.

    Description: Rapid urbanization of cities has greatly modified the thermal and dynamic profile in the urban boundary layer. This paper attempts to study the interaction of urban heating and the local topographic-induced flow circulation for a tropical coastal city, Greater Kuala Lumpur (GKL) in Malaysia. The role of sea and valley breezes-orientated synoptic flow (SBOS) on the interaction is determined by comparing two inter-monsoon periods. A state-of-art numerical model, Weather Research and Forecast Model (WRF-ARW) is used to identify the influence of urbanization through modification of urban surfaces. The model reasonably reproduces the vertical sounding data and near surface weather parameters. The diurnal urban heating pattern is attributed to three predominant factors: (i) weak under calm and clear sky condition (morning heating), (ii) weak under larger atmospheric moisture content (late afternoon convection), (iii) largest (1.4 °C) due to differential cooling rate of urban and rural surface at night. The interaction of urban thermals and upper level SBOS affects the effect of urbanization on local circulation during the day. The urban thermals reduce the weak opposing SBOS (〈 2 ms -1 ) and enhances the inflow of moisture-rich sea breeze passage. This increases the intensity of downwind convective precipitation during late afternoon. On contrary, the strong opposing SBOS (〉 2 ms -1 ) suppresses the vertical lifting of urban thermals and decelerates the sea breeze front. It is discovered that the interaction of urban heating and topographic-induced flow is inter-dependent while the synoptic flow plays a critical role in modifying both factors respectively.
