Notes: The detailed investigation of the low temperature magnetic properties of Gd2CuO4 reveals the irreversible temperature behavior of the dc magnetization and ac susceptibility that is associated with the presence of magnetic anomalies inbetween TNGd=6.6 K and T1(approximate)20 K. Observed hysteresis is centered around 8 K—the temperature of the sudden drop in the magnetization that corresponds to the temperature of reorientation-type magnetic phase transition in the Cu sublattice. The significant irreversibility has also been found in the temperature range of the magnetic anomaly at T1(approximate)20 K. Following the theoretical model of the low temperature magnetic interactions proposed in Vitebsky et al. [Fiz. Niz. Temp. 20, 25 (1994)], the irreversible behavior around T1 can be qualitatively understood assuming the existence of the magnetic clusters in the form of groups of Gd–Cu–Gd sandwiches. Comparing the results obtained for quenched and slowly cooled samples it can be concluded that the long distance coherence, presumably of the oxygen displacements in the crystal structure, is the predominant factor determining the low temperature magnetic behavior of the system. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract We report the results of ac-susceptibility and dc-magnetization measurements for HyGd2CuO4 (0≤y≤0.54). It is shown thatH doping lowers the weak ferromagnetic component in the material. The distinct hysteresis loops observed atT=77 K for both non- and hydrogenated samples change its shape withy. The magnetic ordering temperatures T N Cu and T N Gd , as determined from the temperature dependencies of ac-susceptibility, remain unchanged with sample's hydrogenation. This result seems to indicate that extra electrons are not doped onto the Cu-O planes of Gd2CuO4. The frequency dependencies ofx′(ω, T) andx″(ω, T) for bothy=0 andy=0.15 samples are analysed., The maximums ofx′ andx″ found at about 200K are considered in terms of susceptibility dependence on the spin-lattice relaxation time (τ). The anomalies in ac-susceptibility found recently in Gd2CuO4 atT a=8 K andT b=9.5 K decrease significantly withy. Results are discussed in the context of available data on 214T′-type compounds.

Notes: The two leading terms in the perturbation series expansion of the second virial coefficient A2 have been derived for a three-block copolymer. The theoretical dependences of second virial coefficients on composition of a two-block copolymers AB, b three-block copolymers ABA and c mixtures of two homopolymers A and B have been compared at low values of the excluded volume parameters zA, zB and zAB. It follows from these calculations that with increasing thermodynamic quality of the solvent (with respect to both homopolymers) the effect of repulsive interaction between unlike segments of types A and B on the second virial coefficient of the copolymer decreases. The applicability of perturbation series to block copolymers is discussed.

Notes: Three-block copolymers poly[styrene-b-(ethene-co-butene)-b-styrene], where the middle aliphatic block amounts to about 70 wt.-%, form micelles in 1,4-dioxane with an aliphatic core and a polystyrene shell. The basic characteristics concerning the ratio unimer/micelles, the micellar molar mass, the radius of gyration, and the hydrodynamic radius were determined by combining the results of light scattering, small-angle X-ray scattering, photon correlation spectroscopy, osmometry, and viscometry. The characteristics of the micelles, approximated by the model of concentric spheres, were calculated from the data of light scattering and small-angle X-ray scattering. From a comparison of the geometric and hydrodynamic dimensions of the micelles it follows that in dilute solutions they behave like rigid spheres.

Notes: The problem of the segregation of subchains in an isolated molecule of an A-B block copolymer is closely related to that of the mutually excluded volume of two chemically differing macromolecules. Therefore, by resorting to the “segment cloud” model used by Flory and Krigbaum to calculate the excluded volume, it was possible to derive an expression for the number of contacts between the two blocks in the same molecule. From the results of the calculation it follows that only partial block segregation can be expected unless the condensation of one of the subcoils to a dense globule occurs, owing to the effect of a poor solvent quality.

Notes: Blend membranes were prepared by casting chloroform solutions of mixtures of styrene-N-phenylmaleimide copolymer containing ca. 10 mol % imide units with poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO), and their phase behavior was evaluated. At a content of 20% PPO, the membranes were homogeneous; those having 40 or more % PPO exhibited phase separation. Membranes made of the parent polymers and their blends were tested in the pervaporation of aqueous ethanol solutions; permeabilities to oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide were also determined. The pervaporation characteristics and gas transport properties are discussed considering the interactions of polymer chains and the phase structure of the membranes. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
