Gd-Tb-Fe amorphous films were prepared in an rf sputtering system. Torque measurements were performed systematically on samples which were as-deposited or annealed at 160 °C up to 98 h in air. The torque curves showed additional peaks near 0° and 180°, which increased in amplitude with annealing time. The origin of the anomalous torque curves was investigated with computer simulation, Auger analysis, Kerr rotation and magnetization measurements, and chemical etching. It is concluded that the additional peaks on the torque curve arise from the surface oxidation layer which can be characterized with parameters determined by the computer simulation.
