    Notes: Energy-dispersive mass spectrometry has been used to analyze the energy distribution of O− and OH− species ejected from YBaCuO and iron-garnet targets by Ar+, Kr+, and Xe+ bombardment in H2- and in O2-doped dc and rf magnetron plasmas at 0.05–4.2 Pa pressure. The orifice of the plasma monitor was at 70 mm from the erosion groove underneath the plasma ring. The energy spectra of O− and OH− ions are found to exhibit two major peaks: a sharp one at typically 20 eV termed A and a sharp (dc case) or broad (rf case) peak termed B at higher energies. Peak-A ions may be formed near the edge of the cathode sheath by electron attachment to sputtered neutral oxygen atoms accelerated in the remaining potential gradient of the sheath. Peak-B ions are shown to be accelerated from the target surface to kinetic energies given by the potential gradient across the cathode sheath. In the case of rf magnetron plasmas the total flux of O− and OH− ions associated with the peak B steeply increases with pressure up to ∼0.6 Pa for argon, ∼0.4 Pa for krypton, and ∼0.3 Pa for xenon, concomitant with a shift of the mean particle energy from (approximately-greater-than)100 eV at 0.1 Pa to 〈35 eV at these characteristic pressures. This behavior may be explained by charge-exchange collisions within the rf sheath. At pressures beyond this maximum the total flux of negative ions declines due to electron detachment in regions remote from the plasma which may be caused by collisions with noble-gas atoms and Maxwellian electrons, and by charge transfer to positive noble-gas ions. At pressures beyond several Pa elastic scattering is the dominant loss mechanism of energetic atomic oxygen species. Doping of the noble-gas plasma at the vol % level by oxygen or hydrogen causes severe changes of the O− and OH− yield resulting from a change in the density of oxygen vacancies in the target surface. For argon, krypton, and xenon the yield of O− ions is (approximately-greater-than)20 times higher with the YBaCuO target, as compared to the iron-garnet target, due to the larger electronegativity of the BaO bond. From these data optimum conditions for magnetron sputtering of YBaCuO films are derived, as summarized in the conclusions.

    Notes: SYNOPSIS. In this study the characteristics of the synthesis of DNA and RNA in the nuclei of Loxodes were investigated. Loxodes striatus is a primitive ciliate with 2 pairs of structurally differentiated diploid nuclei, the macro- and micronuclei. The macronuclei are differentiated morphologically into a clearly recognizable central core and an outer zone.To determine DNA and RNA synthesis, individual organisms were analyzed by autoradiography after incubating groups of cells with a 3H-labeled precursor ([3H]thymidine for DNA and [3H]uridine for RNA).The following observations were made: (A) All portions of macro- and micronuclei appeared to contain DNA as judged by the localizations of incorporated [3H]thymidine. (B) The macro- and micronuclei did not synthesize DNA at the same time; moreover, the duration of DNA synthesis in the former was much longer than of the latter nucleus. (C) Replication of DNA in the inner core and outer zone of the macronucleus occurred at separate times with little if any overlap. (D) All of the detectable [3H]uridine incorporation was found in the macronucleus and none in the micronucleus. Within the macro-nucleus the central core was more heavily labeled. (E) The quantitative differences in the label of the different components of the nuclear complex were investigated. (F) Contrary to the previously reported information our results suggest that DNA synthesis can occur in adult macronuclei.The possible explanation of these results is discussed in the context of the nuclear evolution of ciliates and of recent information on nuclear differentiation.

    Notes: The application of distributed feedback by Bragg reflections in electron beam channeling x-ray lasers is investigated. Expressions for low threshold gain are derived for this cavity mirror structure in single crystals and are shown to have possible application in reducing beam high current requirements by many orders of magnitude.

    Notes: The industrial rise of the Third Italy has been characterized by the growth of dynamic networks of flexible small and medium–sized enterprises (SMEs) that are spatially concentrated in specialized industrial districts. This network type of coordination has been associated with horizontal, trust–based relations rather than vertical relations of power and dependency between local organizations. This would lower transaction costs (essential for local systems with an extreme division of labor), facilitate the transmission and exchange of (tacit) knowledge (and thus, learning and innovation), encourage cooperation mechanisms (such as the establishment of research centers), and stimulate political–institutional performance (e.g. through regulation of potential social conflicts).From an evolutionary perspective, the focus is on the dynamics of industrial districts drawing from current experiences in Italy. In this respect, this paper concentrates on two main features of industrial districts that have largely contributed to their economic success in the past, that is, their network organization and the collective learning process. The evolution of industrial districts is described in terms of organizational adjustments to structural change. The way in which the size distribution of firms has changed is discussed (in particular the role of large companies), how the (power) relationships between local organizations have evolved, what are the current sources and mechanisms of learning, and to what extent institutional lock–in has set in. Finally, a number of trajectories districts may go through in the near future are presented.

    Notes: A magneto-optic Faraday rotation diagnostic was implemented on a Z-pinch driven flux-compression generator to measure line-averaged, megagauss, axial-magnetic fields up to 1.6 MG with rise times of 30 kG/ns. The axial-magnetic field rotated the plane of polarization of a 2-W argon laser beam in a 0.725-mm-diam, fused silica quartz fiber mounted coaxial with the Z pinch. The rapid rise time and the high radiation environment presented by the Z-pinch plasma caused a high-pressure impulse 〈100 kbar, to be coupled into the quartz-fiber probe disrupting the polarization-preserving properties of the fiber. The time scale for disruption was characteristic of a shock propagating radially through the fiber to its core. This paper will describe the response of the Faraday diagnostic under these conditions and present a simple model that describes the effects of fiber depolarization that is consistent with previous observations of stress-induced depolarization in optical fibers.

    Notes: A simple electronic system that enables an FTIR spectrometer to control sample state parameters through its sample switching ability is described. Up to sixteen different logic states can be assigned through the software, automating the applied FTIR experiment. The operation of the device is demonstrated for the collection of subtractively normalized interfacial Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (SNIFTIRS) using a custom designed potentiostat. One of the most important advantages of this interface is its flexibility towards various timing/sampling schemes found for different in situ spectroelectrochemical experiments. The suitability of this device for other than electrochemical switching applications is also described.

    Notes: Knowledge of patterns of genetic diversity among existing cultivars helps to broaden the genetic base of new cultivars and maximizes the use of available germplasm resources. This study examined the organization of diversity for morphological traits in 66 landraces of cultivated common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) from Galicia and its relationship with phaseolin seed protein diversity. Data on growth habit, seed and pod traits obtained from field evaluations at two locations during the 1989—91 cropping seasons were subjected to multivariate statistical analysis. Cluster analysis based on 14 quantitative variables and five qualitative variables identified 11 groups. The landraces were also characterized by phaseolin electrophoresis. The results allowed separation of these landraces into Middle and Andean American groups, which could be further divided into at least eight groups within the Andean American cultivars and three within the Mesoamerican cultivars. These groups in turn corresponded to the previously described races Nueva Granada and Peru of South American origin, and races Durango, Jalisco and Mesoamerica from the Middle American domestication centre. These results confirm the existence of two major groups of germplasm in the cultivated common bean landraces from Galicia, Mesoamerican vs. Andean American.

    Notes: Seventy three populations of maize (Zea mays L.) were grown for two years at two locations in Spain in order to study the heritability and constancy of the non-ear traits days to silking, days to anthesis, plant height, ear height, and leaf number.The differences among populations were highly significant in the individual analyses, as well as in the combined analyses for all the traits.The interaction components of variance were in general small. Broad-sense heritabilities ranged from 0.844 to 0.869. Constancies were high, in all cases above 1.0.It is concluded that the non-ear trails studied can be confidently used in a numerical classification of populations of maize.
