Bis(trifluoromethyl)sulfene, (CF3)2C = SO2: Its Synthesis and Isolation as Amine AdductBis(trifluoromethyl)sulfene was obtained and stabilized as quinuclidine adduct 16 by three different methods: (1) by direct symmetrical splitting of the tetrakis(trifluoromethyl)-1,3-dithietane S-oxides 11 and 18 as well as via the TAS salt 15. The structure of 16 exhibits a C-S double bond. The quinuclidinium sulfonate 17 is formed under hydrolysis of 16. In comparison, the corresponding pyridinium sulfonate 13 gives evidence also for the intermediate existence of the adduct 12. The sulfonic acid 7 was prepared, but instead of the sulfonyl chloride 5 the sulfonyl chloride 6 was obtained from 7 and PCl5.
