    Notes: Significant deformation of a grooved Si surface is discovered during low temperature processing (650–900 °C) in a ultra high vacuum. The lowest temperature at which deformation results is determined to be 650 °C for a (111)Si substrate. In addition, clear facets are formed after high temperature processing (850–900 °C). These new findings are tentatively considered to originate from the surface migration of Si atoms on atomically clean surfaces.

    Notes: Beam position stability was found to be largely affected by the distortion of the storage ring building, especially when the beam emittance was lowered. Building distortion in the horizontal direction was noticed as the diurnal deviation of the orbit circumference. The deviation was measured by reading the amount of rf frequency variation necessary to recover the horizontal central orbit. The deviation of the orbit circumference was interpreted to be induced from the ring floor expansion. Such diurnal expansion of the ring floor was evaluated by using a model simulation that dealt with the distortion of the ring building under thermal stress. To reduce such thermal stress, the rooftop of the building was insulated. The deviation of the ring circumference measured after insulation was reduced to one-half of that measured before. The simulation also gave the same amount of deviations as measured before and after insulation.

    Notes: The design and construction of a simple new device for nondestructively monitoring the position of an electron beam is described. By modulating a small portion of the electron-beam current, changes in the amounts of charge induced on the monitor electrodes are detected as currents. These currents are related to the location of the "center of charge" of the electron beam. Calculations and experimental results which illustrate the performance of the device are reported. This device is primarily intended for use in electron-beam ion sources and traps, although it could be applied to other situations where the beam current can be modulated. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A high brilliance configuration of the 2.5-GeV Photon Factory storage ring has been designed and proposed. In the new configuration, the beam emittance will be reduced to 27 nm rad, which is one-fifth of the present value (130 nm rad). The brilliance will be typically increased by a factor of 10. The beam lifetime and beam stability are discussed from a standpoint of the total effective brilliance. All of the improvements for this upgrade are being carefully designed and planned so as to be achieved (1) with minimum influence for the existing beamlines, (2) within the shortest shutdown time, and (3) at low cost. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: To obtain position-stabilized photon beams from the Photon Factory storage ring, our efforts were concentrated on two directions, one to minimize any disturbances causing the stored beam to move, and the other to suppress undesired beam motion by using feedback systems. This paper concerns one of the most disturbing cases, the diurnal beam position drift. The drift motion was suppressed with a global orbit feedback system, so that photon beam position was kept stable at all the beamlines. At the same time, some disturbances were reduced by investigating the cause and the mechanism of beam motion. The fact that the beam drift motion was closely correlated to the outdoor temperature variations led us to make a model simulation by taking account of the meteorological conditions around the building. It was proved that the building distortion due to the external thermal stress resulted in the diurnal beam motion. To minimize such distortion, it is suggested that one should insulate the building on the rooftop rather than underneath it as is usually done.

    Notes: A high-resolution x-ray spectrometer with a spherically bent quartz crystal and an x-ray sensitive charge coupled device (CCD) have been applied to the observation of highly charged ions produced and trapped in the Tokyo electron beam ion trap (EBIT). The spectrometer made it possible to measure the spatial distribution and wavelength of the radiation at the same time. A simple, but lower energy resolution method was also used, by taking advantage of the intrinsic energy resolution of the CCD. The possibility to apply such techniques to diagnostics of an EBIT is discussed. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Recent progress of the Tokyo electron beam ion trap (Tokyo-EBIT) project is described. The Tokyo-EBIT is of an original design and construction with several features different from other EBITs in the world. The maximum energy and current of the electron beam are designed to be 340 keV and 300 mA with a magnetic field of 4.5 T.     Notes: In order to enhance the picosecond absorption spectroscopy, a dual linear image sensor was used for simultaneous intensity measurements of the probing and reference lights by a single polychromator. This detector enabled us to record a fairly well stabilized transient absorption spectrum, and its signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio was much improved. Although the base line spectrum (not averaged) recorded by using a broadband continuum (a self-phase modulation light generated by focusing the fundamental light pulse from a ruby laser into a BK-7 glass block) revealed that the base line fluctuation and drift were less than ±0.04 absorbance units, the five-times spectral average gave rise to the base line fluctuation and drift of less than ±0.01 absorbance units. For an absorption spectrum recorded at a slit width of ≤0.2 mm, the spectral resolution was found to be better than that recorded by a commercial spectrophotometer with a bandwidth of 1.0 nm.
