Description: Some experiments on June 8, 2004, the day of transit of Venus across the Sun, were undertaken at Kolkata (latitude: 23034 N) to observe effect, if any, of transit of Venus on FWF, ELF and VLF amplitudes. The result shows good correlation between their temporal variations during the transit. The observation was unbelievable as the Venus subtends only 1/32th of the cone subtended by Sun on Earth. This anomaly may be explained on the assumption that the height of Venusian atmosphere with high content of CO2, and nitrogen which absorbs electromagnetic and corpuscular radiations from Sun, depleting the solar radiation reaching the Earth to a considerable extent. As a result, relevant parameters of Earth’s atmosphere are modulated and here we show how these changes are reflected in identical behaviour of fair weather field and ELF and VLF spectra.

Description: Pangasius sutchi were artificially bred for determining the hatching success and larvalgrowth response to live food in relation to varying stocking densities. The fertilized eggswere hatched out with successful hatching rates ranging between 60 and 63%. Newlyhatched larvae of 4.4 mm average length were reared using Tubifex as live food inmetallic trays with water temperature of 27 to 29.5°C and dissolved oxygen level of 3.88 to6.22 mg/1 for 6-day with an average survival rate of75.56±13.25%. The P. sutchifry of9-day old were further reared using Tubifex in the polythene covered metallic trays at thestocking densities of 2-7 fry per litre of water for a period of 14 day. P. sutchi fry raisingat 4 individual per litre of water for 14 day gives better results in terms of survival andgrowth.

Notes: ZnS0.05Se0.95 nanocrystalline films were deposited onto fused silica and GaAs (100) substrates by the magnetron sputtering technique. The electrical conductivities of the films deposited onto fused silica substrates were measured in the temperature range of 180–300 K. It was observed that the low temperature conductivity could be explained by hopping of the charge carriers in the Coulomb gap while at elevated temperature Mott hopping is the predominant mode of conduction in these films. A distinct cross over from Efros–Shklovoskii to Mott hopping is observed for all the films. Optical spectra were found to be dominated by the combined effects of optical losses due to absorption and scattering. The absorption spectra indicated a blueshift, the extent of which depended on the crystallite size. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Temperature and compositional dependence of the electrical transport properties of the nonconventional binary bismuth cuprate glasses are reported for the first time. It has been observed that the phonon assisted small polaron hopping model in the nonadiabatic regime is consistent with the data only at high temperatures. The variable range hopping model can fit the low temperature data qualitatively. The polaron hopping models proposed by Schnakenberg [Phys. Status Solidi 28, 623 (1968)] and Emin [Phys. Rev. Lett. 32, 303 (1974)] can predict quantitatively the conductivity data in the entire temperature range of measurement for all glass compositions. The physical parameters obtained from the best fits of these models are found reasonable and consistent with the glass compositions. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The dielectric properties of the PbO–Fe2O3 glassy system are reported in the frequency range 102–106 Hz and in the temperature range 300–500 K. The experimental data have been analyzed in the light of the dipolar relaxation model. It is observed that this model is consistent with the frequency and temperature dependence of the complex dielectric constant. The network former PbO influences strongly the dielectric properties, yielding large values of static and high-frequency dielectric constants and a narrow distribution of relaxation times. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The senescence of sterile glumes, flag leaf and the other two leaves below the ear of wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Sonalika) was studied in relation to grain development and surgical manipulation. The senescence of sterile glumes was faster than that of the leaves in terms of chlorophyll and protein degradation. The flag leaf senesced later than the other two leaves below it. Removal of sterile glumes markedly reduced the harvest index (crop: straw ratio) and average dry weight per grain as compared to removal of the flag leaf. Maximum grain weight was achieved after the glumes had senesced completely. Removal of the ear delayed senescence of all the three leaves. It is concluded that sterile glumes are important suppliers of assimilate for grain filling and that nutrient drainage is the primary cause of the monocarpic senescence in wheat.
